Not got a clue what the fuck Akira is, but Efron's actually a pretty good actor.

It's a very important manga. Very influential and a favourite amongst manga and anime enthusiasts to this day. It has even played a part in influencing various sci-fi in the West.

I can actually see that working. Zack Efron does have the talent and just needs more adult roles to cement his place in Hollywood. Tetsuo will be harder to cast in my opinion but we'll see who get's rumored for it soon enough. Also if it's not M or R then why are they bothering? Seriously both the manga and animated movie were graphic and removing all that for a PG rating will make it boring.

You should never make a decision about something before it has had a chance to make its case. If it does suck by all means rage all you want, but give it a chance first.

I have no problems with Efron. What I DO have aproblem with is the rating. I've only read volume one of the manga and it was enough to earn an R rating IMO.

Honestly, the only way I'd even consider watching it is if they rename it and just say it was inspired by Akira, because that's what it sounds like. But if they did that, people would just say it's ripping off Akira.

Sadly, this movie has backed itself up into a corner before it even has shown a trailer.

Seriously, just because he was in HSM doesn't mean he is shit. He made a hell of a lot of money off of those movies too. Best damn business decision he could have made in my mind.

For those unfamiliar with the manga itself or the issues causing concern here I shall validate the following. The only way to make a GOOD movie based on this would be the following;

1) Gritty, down to earth actors.
2) An R/M rating with extreme violence and rather creepy sexual implications.
3) Keep it in a very Japanese metrapolitan setting.

I don't care how good of an actor he is, or how amazing the movie will look like, this shit will not end well.
There's a reason all attempts to make the mangas into a movie failed. SOME THINGS SHOULD NEVER BE MADE INTO A MOVIE![/rant]

Though, if they try, they're gonna edit WAY too much out to make it into a PG-13 movie. It just won't be the same. :/

2 is probably a pipe dream, and 3 is definitely out the window.

PG-13? Have they even seen Akira? I don't want to see Zac Efron in New New York WITHOUT the Tetsuo-fetus thing. I didn't mind it when they took out the alien squid from Watchmen, but you need the inflation seen. What are they going to do to? Give him an anneurysm? Have him collapse into himself? Both those options suck.

You just can't do Akira with a rating that low. It needs the cool violent-psychic thing going. I am going to want to see Tetsuo's guts fall out. I am going to want him to splatter a guy on the ceiling, walls and floor. Give me my violence.

As for the Zack Efron thing, I don't care because the only character I liked was Tetsuo. He's going to be the one they're going to have to be nerd-sensitive about.
