Nintendo Dominates Black Friday

Nintendo [http://www.nintendo.com] cleaned house over the week of Black Friday, selling a combined 1.5 million Wii and DS systems, more than tripling the sales of the PlayStation 3.

This might be a bit of bad news for anyone gleefully awaiting the fall of the Big Mario Machine. According to internal sales estimates, the company banged out 900,000 Nintendo DS handhelds and 600,000 Wii consoles in the U.S. over the week from November 21 to 27. Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime did the math and said it worked out to roughly 9000 Nintendo systems sold for every hour of every day of the Black Friday sales week.

Sales of the PlayStation 3 were significantly slower but still represented "an amazing start" to the holiday season with more than 440,000 units sold in the U.S. over the past week, which Gamasutra [http://www.sony.com] represented an "all-time high" in demand. Microsoft has not yet released Black Friday sales numbers for the Xbox 360.

Black Friday is the day following Thanksgiving in the U.S. that traditionally signals the beginning of the holiday shopping season and is typically marked by big sales and chaos at retailers. While primarily a U.S. phenomenon, Black Friday sales are becoming increasingly common in Canada as well. The rather oddly named shopping day is widely believed to represent the point at which retailers begin to operate "in the black," although for people who have retail jobs it simply tends to be the darkest, most awful day of their work year.

You're surprised? Such is the brand identity Nintendo has now.

I will however be interested to see the Kinect+360 numbers.

What's to brag about? From my perspective, 600,000 red bricks were sold this week for tremendous profit.
[/sarcasm]

Seriously. Selling Wiis is great and all, but when are we going to get actual GAMES for the Wii that aren't just a bunch of gimmicks?

Kirby's Epic Yarn. Great.
First Wii game in 2 years that I've given half a hoot about, and the last game I cared about turned out to be some overhyped mediocrity.

Wii + DS outsold PS3, shocking

Why don't they just compare Wii to PS3?

Or compare total dollars paid for Nintendo vs dollars paid for Sony products.

I'm a bigtime Nintendo fanboy but this is a fail article.

So you haven't seen...
No More Heroes
Fire Emblem:Radiant Dawn
Metroid Prime:Trilogy
Guilty Gear XX A Core +
Goldeneye 007
Monster Hunter:Tri
Tatsunoko VS Capcom
Muramasa:The Demon Blade
Red Steal 2

All Excellent Games, some use the Motion Controls very well.

OT:Not Surprising, especially with some of the Games coming out soon.

My shop sold out on Saturday, we got a box or two in but they went shortly...
I don't know the exact figures but they can't be too bad...

This.

I'm a manager for a supermarket in a town of about 9,500+ people, and this time of the year is horrific. We are talking deliveries either not turning up because of the weather, and when they do come its usually four times the amount we normally have, plus lovely 15 hour shifts! Plus we are a 'budget' supermarket chain so we do more work with less staff, so yeah, I freaking hate this time of the year.

As for the main topic, I'm surprised that Microsoft haven't released their figures yet. I'm guessing they didn't do as well as hoped? I mean it seems that Nintendo have panned everyone once again heh. If the PS3 only sold 440,000 in the US with the whole 'Move' wave of buyers, I'm sure that Microsoft had a hard time with the Kinetic as well.

Hopefully this motion stuff will be the 'Virtual Boy' of this decade.

No More Heroes: Played it. Cool stylizing. Great dialogue...hideously tedious busywork segments between assassinations. Sadly, the latter part sticks out to me the most. Travis Touchdown is a delightful asshole though.

Fire Emblem: Nope. I can't find a copy anywhere short of Gamestop, and I don't do business with them anymore. I may order one from online though.

Metroid Prime Trilogy: I already own all three titles separately.
Though it's worth noting that Metroid Prime 3 is the SOLE GAME I'VE PLAYED on the Wii that makes sensible use of the controls.

Guilty Gear: I'll stick to my PS2 copy of Guilty Gear X2. I'm not into buying the same game year after year anymore. It's too costly for too little gain.

Goldeneye: Sorry. I'm tired of remakes. Nevermind remakes of remakes of movies.
We've had a Goldeneye game on N64, Gamecube, and now the Wii. They might not be the same game, but I've seriously had it with franchise milking.
Call me jaded and unreasonable if you must, but I honestly wouldn't be able to shake the feeling that I'm being abused while playing this.

Monster Hunter Tri: Had it on the PSP. The camera nearly crippled my left index finger. It was pretty difficult, but satisfying...until the biblical amounts of grind hit me.
So now, do I really want to play a game that requires precise movement and timing on a system that features laggy/buggy controls?
Actually, my friends did rent this game for a weekend. It looked ok, but nothing I haven't played before.

The other three I've heard of/seen, but am not really interested in.

Though thanks for the suggestions. I might look at Fire Emblem.
It will be the first time I've used my Wii in months...hopefully I can justify its existence.

And, lest we forget, this was their big game to celebrate Mario's 25th anniversary.

Mario Allstars...of course! Lets commemorate our anniversary by re-releasing a title we already released 16 years ago! But with better graphics!

This sounds suspiciously familiar...hmm.
3DS launch titles, perhaps? (I'm looking at you Ocarina of Time and Star Fox 64)

While I see merit in remaking/re-releasing your older stuff for an anniversary, the effect is somewhat diminished when that's been your standard business plan for the last 6 years.

Way to go Nintendo! I'm not surprised though.

I'm glad to hear that the PS3 is doing good as well. And is Microsoft ashamed of their numbers or something? Usually we'd hear them bragging too.

Huh? Dominates? That's WAY DOWN FROM LAST YEAR. In November and December, typically sales number in SEVEN FIGURES.

600K? Really?

Wanna see November 2009?

Wii - 1.26M
Xbox 360 - 819,500
PS3 - 710,400
NDS - 1.70M
PSP - 293,900
PS2 - 203,100

"We sold LESS than HALF as many Wiis! LET'S CELEBRATE!!!"

They've sold 600,000 consoles in a week, not a month. 1.2M over the month sounds like reasonable number given these weekly sales.

You seem to be quoting figures for the entire month of November. These sales figures were for a single week. Assuming that's correct, doing half as much in a quarter of the time strikes me as pretty impressive.

Want GoldenEye, have Red Steel 2. Also all the Metroid Primes, but on the Gamecube and Wii... That's why I hate packs that have "all three games and a bonus!" (don't know it this one has a bonus, but I haven't looked because I already own all of them.) Also want Fallout NV and Civ 5, but those are for the PC...

Personally I'm buying the All-Stars re-release mosly for the soundtrack that comes with it. Plus, I was probably going to end up buying the games on the Virtual Console sooner or later.
