The Ukrainian government is opening up the disaster site of Chernobyl as an official tourist destination next year. Would you ever visit?

I'm just not personally that interested - or more so, that there are other places on my priority list to visit before I die, so this isn't anywhere near the top...

No. I can't think of a single reason that I would want to go.

Hell, even if you offered me a FREE trip, I'd probably decline it.

I'd want to go... If I could afford it, and if I could be guaranteed of not getting turned into something from the Fallout universe...

I know a guy who was at pripyat and it was his birthday present. Him and his girlfriend also have matching gasmasks.

Yes, I'd like to see a place like that. And of course, I would paint myself with fluorescent green paint and rtell people "Save yourselves while you still can!" but that goes without saying.

If I had the money and time (at the same time for a change!) I'd be interested; it's an important historical site, and I know some folks who'd like to see how it works as an accidental wildlife preserve.

I saw some documentaries shot in the town... eerie doesn't even begin to cover it, but it's frozen in time like a modern Pompeii.

Oh Goddess no. I have seen pictures of that place and it is creepy as hell. It makes my skin crawl whenever I see them.

I'm quite interested but, to be honest, I'm agreeing with you.

There are plenty of other places I want to visit before I perpetually hit the sack. Like Rome... I want to go to Rome with my girlfriend.

Many complicated thoughts.

On the one hand I have visited places like Auschwitz because I am a history nerd and seeing places like that can really make you understand, or at least get a little closer to understanding, big important events.

On the other hand I know the radiation at certain parts of Chernobyl is still high enough to be dangerous, and I do have a desire to not go near anything that will give me radiation sickness if I hang around too long.

And also, taking into account that the highest radiation area is the destroyed facility, which is also what I would be most interested in, I wouldn't really be left with much to do. Auschwit was only really a two day thing, and any longer would have started to diminish the experience. Part of the reason I went was because it was an optional school trip and I felt it would be an important thing to do.

For this I would have to justify going over to Russia for a couple of days in order to see a burned out nuclear facility in the distance and some abandoned buildings. Yes it would be a little creepy but I've seen much worse.

So I would if I could justify it and get over my fear of death by radiation, but in practical terms no, which means that my overall answer is pretty much no.

Do you mean the Chernobyl power-station or the town of Prypiat, the town that was evacuated? That's just me being picky though and will assume you mean the town.

I'd be well up for that and already fancy going. I thought limited numbers of tourists were allowed in (properly supervised of course) and several families from the town go back now and again.

I'm not sure why it holds such a fascination for me but I have watched many documentaries on the disaster and read several books and articles about the town of Prypiat.
