Blizzard Gives Thumbs-Up to World of StarCraft Mod

Blizzard says it's anxious to see the continued development of the fan-made StarCraft 2 [http://www.worldofstarcraft.proboards.com/index.cgi] team.

It's been a busy few days for Ryan Winzen, the lead on the World of StarCraft MMO fan project. You almost certainly know the story by now; soon after Winzen Blizzard [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/107039-Blizzard-Fans-Fuse-StarCraft-2-and-WoW-Into-Whole-New-Game] has finally waded into the fray with the following official bit of good news.

Earlier this week, a player-made StarCraft 2 mod called World of StarCraft and described as a 'StarCraft MMO' was featured on a number of prominent gaming news sites, catching the attention of gamers as well as our own. With the name so closely resembling that of YouTube [http://www.worldofwarcraft.com] to request the video be removed while that discussion took place. We were also curious about the project and wanted to discuss with the developer what the mod entailed.

It was never our intention to stop development on the mod or discourage the community from expressing their creativity through the StarCraft 2 editor. As always, we actively encourage development of custom maps and mods for StarCraft 2, as we've done with our strategy games in the past. That's why we release an editor with our RTS games, and why we feature top player-created content in the custom game search. It's also why we held a contest to spotlight the best community-crafted StarCraft 2 mods at last year's BlizzCon, and why we'll continue to improve Battle.net [http://www.battle.net] to better showcase player-created content.

Like many players in the community, we're looking forward to seeing the continued development of this mod, and as part of our ongoing discussion, we've extended an offer to the developer to visit the Blizzard campus and meet with the StarCraft 2 development team. As always, we appreciate all of the efforts of the talented and enthusiastic mod-making community, and we look forward to seeing and playing what they create using the StarCraft 2 editor in the future.

I really can't imagine a cooler response than this. Allowing the mod to continue would have made everyone happy, but encouraging the work and bringing the dev to the Blizzard campus for a meeting with the StarCraft 2 team is ridiculously above and beyond the call, and Blizzard deserves some serious kudos for handling a situation that could have turned ugly in a hurry with absolute style and class. World of StarCraft will probably still need a name change but as far as happy endings go, I don't think anyone could ask for a better one than this.

Notice the filer of the copyright claim on Youtube is listed as "Activision" not "Blizzard" hell, not even "Activision-Blizzard"

EDIT: I approve Blizzard, though I'm not surprised, you have quite a good track record with fan treatment.

EDITEDIT: Actually, the videos aren't back yet, dick move guys, if you just wanted them removed temporarily, you could have tried, you know, ASKING LIKE A CIVIL PERSON

Activision makes every effort to piss off their fans and Blizzard goes out of its way to please their fans.

They get no points for this until the videos are back up on Youtube. As of now, they are not.

Smells like more of that PR BS stuff that keeps getting everywhere.
Except that they openly promoted their fan made content and invited the lead of the mod team to come to the Blizzard campus and talk to Starcraft 2 designers?
Because that happens every time someone does a mod like this.

OT: Great to hear. I can't wait to see this, and play it if it gets released.

Really? I doubt it. Blizzard have quite the track record for treating modders well - trying to break WoW notwithstanding - so it doesn't really smack of PR-farming to me.

Sure, I bet it crossed their mind that people will like this... But it's more likely that they really DO want the mod finished and released. Or maybe they want the guy to help them develop the actual thing. Who knows?

Ha, fooled you, it's really so they can shoot the guy in the head for stealing their property.

Damn, good move Blizzard. This is a perfect example of how connected to the community Blizzard is.

Well now if all goes well the only MMORPG that has a chance of going agianst WoW will be out by 2015.

Also while Blizzard may hold a good sreak with thier community, if they harp about thier good deeds on thier sites then it really is no better than a PR stunt.

So, their "routine" reaction to something they suspect but don't know about is to DMCA first and ask questions later. Classy.

As someone who's actually gone through the process, getting a video put BACK up on YouTube once it's been pulled is a pain in the ass, even when you have the copyright owner's express permission.

In the end, it's usually just easier to reupload it. Sucks, but true. :/

So they created a bunch of work for him, and scarred his Youtube account record, when they could have just asked him? Fuckers.

If this mod takes off, then more people will buy Starcraft 2 to play it. Or maybe Blizzard wants to create a sequel to it eventually.
Or maybe they'll do what Valve did with Team Fortress and buy the guy out if it's successful enough.

And this is why blizzard rocks. Not only did they give a go ahead with the mod, but they are interested to see what the guy does next. Good on ya keep up the good work.
