Peter Molyneux Loves Minecraft

When asked who else he would like to see win a BAFTA Fellowship, Fable creator Peter Molyneux had nothing but kind words for Minecraft mastermind Markus "Notch" Persson.

Last night at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) videogame awards, Lionhead mastermind Peter Molyneux was honored with a caught up with the man [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/108540-Peter-Molyneux-Apologizes-for-Over-Promising] after the awards, and asked him who he thought would be in the running for a Fellowship award in ten years' time. While the big-dreaming Molyneux could have chosen a dozen different names in the industry, he chose to praise one in particular - Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson.

"That's a good question, and it brings up an interesting point," said Molyneux. "I wish you - people in the press - would focus on some of that up and coming talent, because there isn't enough focus on it in my opinion. People like Marcus Persson who did Minecraft, he's a fantastic person to talk to, and I think Minecraft is a complete work of genius."

Anyone who followed the Lionhead boss on Twitter might have had an inkling that Molyneux was a Minecraft fan from the way he begging Valve for Half-Life 3 [http://twitter.com/pmolyneux/status/46915386112876544]). Unfortunately, says Molyneux, the risk you run when inviting everyone to play Minecraft is that everyone will actually show up.

"It was a disaster!" said Molyneux. "Me and my son were playing with it, and he was bullying me saying he wished he could get more people into our world so I set it up and he was a bit disappointed that no-one knew about it, so I just tweeted the web address. That was the worst thing to do - within ten seconds of me pushing the Twitter button there were ten people, within 20 there were 50 people, and in a minute there were 200 people and we were bombarded until the point where the whole server crashed."

Luckily, said Molyneux, the newcomers couldn't destroy his son's work. "I opted that they couldn't have permission to change anything - but if you could imagine, there was this hill completely full of people, like a forest of people. It was quite scary, actually."

But to Peter Molyneux, this event only enforced the power of Minecraft. "In Minecraft your designs tend to be quite personal - and that's the genius of it - and to think there are all these people just going there and looking, it was quite funny."

"I think Minecraft's the best thing I've played in the last ten years," lauded Molyneux, "[And] what's so brilliant about it - and I've met Marcus and he's a real inspirational person - he did everything on his own, and I think how brilliant and inspirational that is, to not need the full force of publishers and marketing people. He did everything on his own."

The full interview isn't just Peter Molyneux praising Minecraft - though that is an admittedly large portion of it - and it's worth reading over at IGN [http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/115/1156187p1.html], if only to take a look into the mind of one of gaming's most eccentric auteurs.

Peter. If you'd wake up for 10 seconds you could make something equally as brilliant. Get away from Microsoft, form your own small company on PC and start making great, innovative games like you used to. I guarantee the community will be behind you from the ofset.

Makes sense; Minecraft is pretty much his brand of ludicrous promises (infinite random worlds, etc.) actually functional and in a real game. In any case, it's always great to see various industry icons praising independent games.

But thank God you can't hold a Creeper's hand and lure it to the work-house...

I think you can count the number of people who DON'T love Minecraft a lot easier than those who do. It's the first mainstream-palatable entry in an entirely new genre; it's got the same originality, the same spark, the same charismatic uniqueness present in games like Dune II and Doom. Mark my words - Minecraft will go down in gaming history alongside other great originators.

And just think - I was playing it back in May 2009! Back when there was no survival mode, no purchasing option, and nothing more than a set of blocks to build with in a few multiplayer servers... two years later, Minecraft has sold 1.6 million copies, made its creator somewhere between 24 and 30 million dollars (before taxes; 99-odd percent of it in less than a year), and become known throughout the greater realm of the Internets. How far they have come; how far will they go?

That comment just made my day. I'm struggling to contain laughter.

It makes sense that when the guy behind the Fable franchise is praising Minecraft, you should buy it. Now.

Ive already bought Minecraft twice. Once for me and one more as a late birthday/xmas present for my sister for the last 14 years.

At first glace I thought minecraft wasn't for me. I traditionally don't dig sandboxy games but after watching some youtube videos I decided to just spend the 15 or dollars and just buy it. Everything from designing a village to creating an intricate minecrart system was just so addicting! I've even built a (non-functioning) ship to use as my main base.

Recently I've been experimenting with MCedit to make my own adventure map - so far I have it so you have to fire a TnT canon at a gate to invade a castle. Good fun!

Does he still have the coding style skills? That's going to be the biggest potential hurdle. Coding has changed quite a bit since he started. Unless he's keeping up with his skillset, he doesn't really have that option anymore.

He likes it? That's great. I myself like wild mushroom risotto, but I don't make threads about it.

OF COURSE HE LOVES MINECRAFT, it was the same principle he wanted to have in fable, "to plant an acorn and watch it grow into a tree", "change the world with your own hands" all the publicity stuff he barfed left and right is what minecraft literally is!

anyone else noticed that??

EDIT: yep, ninja´d

I wanna see the realistic animal genitals he will make with this game, of course unless he snaps first and threatens to kill himself.

I don't intend to discredit Notch (I love Minecraft), but wasn't Minecraft built on, or heavily inspired by this other game "Infiniminer"? I wonder how the Infiniminer developers feel about Notch getting all the credit for a game concept they invented.

Oh Peter Molyneux, you so crazy.

But can you really be surprised Molyneux likes Minecraft? I mean, really. The game is everything he's ever wanted in a game.
