Western Catherine Box Art Covers Up the T&A (for Some)

The North American box art for Catherine will be censored, but only at certain outlets.

When we first saw the box art [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/105847-Catherine-Box-Art-Its-All-About-the-T-A] for Atlus' enigmatic erotic-horror-puzzle-platformer Catherine, it left no doubt that this was a game about sexuality, and probably more than a little bit of fanservice to go along with it. On Xbox 360, protagonist Vincent clung to the shapely rear of his girlfriend Katherine; on PS3 he slid down into the ample cleavage of the coquettish Catherine.

While Atlus used the unchanged box art to art [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/108129-Catherine-Officially-Cheating-on-Japan-With-U-S] in their promotional images. These images were much less risqué than the originals, cropping out the T&A in favor for close ups of the respective ladies' faces.

Naturally, this led to speculation that the Catherine box art would be censored for its North American release. However, Atlus told Siliconera [http://www.siliconera.com/2011/04/27/alternate-catherine-cover-art-for-north-america] that the alternate box art was just that - an alternate. According to Atlus, this art was a separate package that was to be sent to certain retailers who wanted a more family-friendly image.

[blockquote]The vast majority of copies available at launch will feature the cover we originally unveiled, essentially the Japanese cover of the game. A small percentage of copies, however, will feature a cover that is more considerate of certain retailers' broader customer demographic. Fans need not worry; Catherine's cover art is NOT being altered for North America. There is just an extra option being made available for more sensitive shoppers.[/blockquote]

My first inclination is to say "Aha, Wal-Mart!" But assuming Atlus is telling the truth (and there is no reason I can think of for it to lie), then changing the cover for resale at Wal-Mart - North America's biggest videogame retailer - would hardly be "a small percentage of copies." Still, one can't help but wonder just what sort of outlet would request such a box art change if not the store that sells everything.

For amusement's sake, here's what a certain dashingly handsome news writer wrote in the original Catherine post: "It's almost a sure bet that if Catherine. does make it over to the States we won't get box art that's anywhere near as interesting as this." I'm sure he's glad to be proven wrong - mostly.

The neck looks gimped in the right one with the title there and without the rest of the body. I had to look at the original art to see that that was supposed to be a body down there...looks like a floaty head xD

Its her choker. It is pink which makes it blend with the pink background.

I got the impression that would just be the boxart for the dummy box copies in certain stores, not for the copy you actually take home with you. That's what I've inferred, anyway.

Still getting the game with the original covers. I want people to ask about what the hell is sitting on my shelf. Besides the original art looks so much better.

I love that. Because the game is so family-friendly that they want a cover to match it.

This is the game that has the word "erotic" bolted to it every second news item. But no, can't have a suggestive cover with the most minuscule trace of eroticism, no! Someone looking for something to complain about might see it! Probably while showing off ten times the skin either of these women are showing off.

Why not sell ammo in boxes featuring cartoon bullets and slugs popping bloodlessly through smiling ducks and deer?

Yeah, I'm definitely getting it with the original box art. The only question is for which console? I have both.

A family friendly-friendly image for an erotic horror game? Why? it's not like this game is intended as fun for all the family.
I get they don't want it all shoved in the faces of customers uninterested in the game, but this ruins all the lovely freudian issues and sexual symbolism.

I...dont understand what the hubbub is with this game. It's a japanese game about a guy who is thinking of cheating on his girlfriend. Fine. The actual game part is....what? Jumping up a tower before the piece with you on it falls?

Doesn't this sound a bit...boring to everybody? Or is the allure of a bit of hentai just too strong these days?

T&A for some, but for others, it's the storyline's allure for sure (and character development, all that jazz). Atlus is no stranger to mature themes in video games (past topics including: suicide, depression, sexuality (uh..again?), philosophy, demons, etc.). Some of my favorite games of all time were made by them; think weird + deep + awesome.

The entire plot is ABOUT SEX, even the puzzle solving bits have weird Freudian references TO SEX, in fact I'm quite sure that the guy actually does cheat on his girlfriend. Point is, it's the plot, not the puzzle solving gameplay that gets you. I'm reminded of that shit called "Portal" that sounds boring as fuck to me "ooooh, physics puzzles! *sarcasm* EXCITING!*end sarcasm*" but the plot actually interested me, not enough to buy the game, but I did have an enjoyable 2 minutes reading the wikipedia page.
I'll give it to you that most people wouldn't find Portal mindblowingly fun, but it was more cerebal then jumping up a tower, no matter how many Freudian cigar-smoking references you make.

I guess the point i'm trying to make is, if you wanna grab some porn, grab some porn - dont grab porn that you have to work for, doing a boring minigame.

I guess the plot of 'omg should i cheat on my girlfriend' is quite a good one, and not something a lot of Western developers would ever come near with hazmat suits. I'm just not sure it should be sold as a game. The artistic anime style, as well as story depicted, would make for a very decent movie, or even a TV show if they stretched it long enough. Why make people jump through annoying little hoops for it?

You'll notice i said ANNOYING hoops, as opposed to just hoops....or perhaps portals XP. All videogames make you jump through hoops and perform like circus monkey to get to that sweet sweet context and plot. The difference is, in this game, the hoop is just your bog standard hoop, as opposed to a hoop on fire. Or something.

So....they want a more family friendly image for a Mature title?

Do I get the feeling they've totally missed the point?
Then the little child gets the grown up toy, and the parents try suing the game company for misleading them...
