So....they want a more family friendly image for a Mature title?

Do I get the feeling they've totally missed the point?
Then the little child gets the grown up toy, and the parents try suing the game company for misleading them...
And the parents curse the game company for not putting a more accurate representation of the game as the box art.
"I mean, it's just a pretty girl's face..."

I'll seriously laugh when parents start getting this for their kids. You know there will be some idiots who will look at this, hear their child screaming they want it, ignore the obvious ESRB rating, and then flip out when they see their kid watching two adults doing it... (And the mind-f**kery, but that's the best part.)

I just hope that the content inside is unchanged. That's my biggest worry right there. They can change the artwork outside all they want, box art is nothing too important to me. It is only when they start playing with content and altering it to make it less explicit (Reminding me of the old FF games where content was changed to keep down the religious symbolism.) then I'll be fricken pissed and lash out like a rabid hyena on steroids.

Im still hoping for reversable sleeves with both designs on them. Because I prefer boobs (ps3) to bum (360) in my opinion, but have an Xbox.

The box art change to make it more "family-friendly" isn't for the people who are interested in the game, it's for the people walking by with their kids to another section of the store who might not want their child to see the more risqué cover. Does it make sense? Not to me, but it might if I was a parent.
Well they could, and this is just a thought backed by 40 odd years experience, move it to a shelf above kiddies eye height? Say, the top shelf?

And seriously,

And they're not the mature ones.

You forget the double standard in the entertainment industry: mature for potential sexual reasons=bad, mature for extreme violence=okay.

Actually, people just seem paranoid of anime-style covers. Remember the Record of Agarest War controversy?

I agree with this... mostly because sexual situations are easier to see by the sensitive public and are viewed as more capable of corrupting today's youth. Then again, extreme violence is only viewed in contempt as a scapegoat for when a child does something like beating the piss and blood out of another... or murder.

No...

Personally I find that people are just stupid about anime. A certain company I may have worked for sent me an email saying that all of the Tank Girl books shouldn't be put in the kids section because they'd just noticed the content.

Ya think?

I'm not sure I understand why a box-art change is worth worrying about. I'll save that for the content... not that bad cover art hasn't hurt sales of some good games overseas(ICO, I'm looking at you), but as long as they're not changing what lies INSIDE the games then I'm happy.

This is a good point - why dont the game stores simply move all the MA15+ titles to a location solely for adult audiences, like the porno section in your video store?

...Because then mass media will pounce and declare every GTA and GOW a sicko, or sick and defiled, just like people who go into the porno section in their video store.

And yes, DOA is a game about sexy women playing beach volleyball - but they're not doing it topless, and they're not doing it seductively (never played the game, so i'm just assuming). Its supposed to be a sports game - with hot chicks playing, yes, but then you may as well ban all women competion in most sporting events, coz there's some pretty hot babes in those as well.

And Bayonetta could be construed as just some chick with heaps of hair with guns kicking the shit out of the cameraman. Nothing rauchy about that....not until you reach about minute three in the intro cinematic...

For anyone wondering, Catherine barely earned a high teen to low M rating (CERO gave it a C). Anyone saying it is a porn game, thanks for jumping to conclusions!

Haha! The US cover art curse strikes again... sort of...

EDIT:

On the other hand, the US has a somewhat schizophrenic rating system for games (and movies as well, but that is another conversation entirely). I would not be surprised it gets a solid M rating simply for the Freudian content, even more for the fact that the main character is essentially cheating on his girlfriend in a clearly sexual manner.

Porn game it is not, but the bar for M ratings in the US is very low. Pretty much any violence with blood, one serious sexual reference, or 3 "fucks" in the dialog pretty much brands it an M-rating right off the back.

Yes, but this is the U.S. we're talking about. As a country we're so prude that anything with even light sexual themes is misconstrued as being graphic.

If the Duke only nets a M then I'm confident that the ESRB will actually play the game before they rate it. Duke Nukem had AO written all over it. I have a little faith.
