Sherlock Holmes Investigating Star Trek 2

No, not Robert Downey Jr. I'm talking about Benedict Cumberbatch: The Sherlock Holmes who speaks with a real English accent.

Star Trek 2 has been accumulating a pretty impressive cast lately. After it was revealed that <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/112006-Khan-May-Actually-Be-In-Star-Trek-2>Khan may be appearing in the film, rumors have been flying about who might wind up playing the character. <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/114544-Robocop-Joins-Star-Trek-2-Cast>Last month's announcement that Peter Weller (AKA Robocop and Buckaroo Banzai) was joining the film kicked speculation up another notch, and a lot more fuel has just been added to that fire now that Benedict Cumberbatch has signed up to boldly go where no man has gone before.

If you haven't heard of Benedict Cumberbatch before now, then you need to stop whatever you're doing and go watch <a href=http://www.amazon.com/Sherlock-Season-One-Benedict-Cumberbatch/dp/B004132HZS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325793797&sr=8-1>Sherlock Season One. Cumberbatch's portrayal of the world's greatest detctive is one of the best things to appear on television (as is Martin Freeman's Dr. Watson). Of course, there's no word about what role Cumberbatch will be portraying, but I'm personally hoping he'll be terrorizing the crew of the Enterprise; the man plays sinister far too well.

This isn't the only big nerd movie that Cumberbatch has a major role in. He'll be portraying Smaug the Dragon (via motion capture) and voicing the Necromancer in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again.

Star Trek 2 is due to hit theaters on May 17th, 2013.

Sherlock is awesome. Never seen him in anything else, but I like his portrayal there. Would like to know who he's playing, though.

sorry to nit pick... but you typed "Homes" instead of "Holmes"

Also I've seen the show, although there is only 3 episodes on Netflix Canada, his deductions are mind blowing almost to the point of absurdity. Like it non the less.

I looked at the synopsis and immediately thought: "Why would they want you?" "Because, unlike some other Sherlock Holmeses, I can speak with an English accent."

So both Holmes and Watson are playing against each other in the same film... Which is the hobbit. There's all levels of nerdgasm going on there.

It'll be interesting seeing how he pull off the motion capture for a Dragon. It would have been a nice touch having voice both Smaug AND Sauron though.
Newsroom got that the wrong way round; he voices Smaug and mo-caps the Necromancer/Sauron.

Wait.. they turned the miniseries into an actual series? DAMMIT! I know I am not in the UK but why was I not informed?!?

I loved the first 3 episodes. Only problem I had was using it as an opportunity that was trying to subversively push the concept that Holmes was gay.

As for Trek. Ok, whatever hurries this film and the next one up so we can trash this garbage of kirk/spock. Doesnt matter who is playing them, Kirk/Spock trek blows.

Only seen one of the Holmes Episodes but as they are on Netflix I will be watching them ASAP.

From the trailers I think he is in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. Which I am looking forward to Bobs review of. He is a talented actor but he already looks a bit too much like Nero to be anything but Romulan at this stage, but Could see him playing Khan or a particularly cunning Klingon

I saw this guy play Frankenstein last year, it was one of the best performances I've ever seen (if not the best). And... he would be better than Ricardo Montalban. And I LOVE Ricardo Montalban's Khan.

Oh my God, Sherlock Holmes is Smaug

SMAUG IS SHERLOCK HOLMES...

...AND SAURON!
I'll never commit another crime as long as I live...

However, it does solve the mystery of how Holmes always seems to know the answer.

And thus the idea for a black Sherlock Holmes was born :p

OT: Who? Never seen/heard of that dude, the real Holmes for me is Jeremy Brett. There's another actor that I like for Holmes I think, can't find his name now, but really, that guy is total news to me.

I agree Jeremy Brett was the best Victorian Holmes there ever has been on film or TV. The BBC did a 3 episode series which updated Holmes in 2010. I guess from your mention of Jeremy Brett, that like me, you think that idea is close to heresy. I sat down to watch the first episode fully prepared to hate it, but much to my surprise I thoroughly enjoyed it. I think they updated to the present day because of the strength of the Brett version, any new adaptation would have to compete with it and I don't think they wanted too. I would recommend trying to get hold of copy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherlock_%28TV_series%29

Jeremey Brett is still the Best Holmes. Cumberbatch is pretty good though. Too bad the rest of the show is kind of inane.

I hope that is a Robin Hood Men in Tights reference...! :p

Personally I like this! He is an awesome actor, and did a great job in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy... Which was a damn good movie... Shows he can do serious as well as quirky, so it will be interesting to see which he takes in Star Trek! Not bad for someone who started out in serious tv dramas... and period dramas like Atonement!

Also... How much betting he will be the next Doctor in Dr. Who too?

Its nice to see Cumberbatch getting.the recognition he deserves now. Sherlock, The Hobbit, Star Trek, good to see his talents are noticed now.

Must be the voice, that wonderfully contagious voice.
