sorry to nit pick... but you typed "Homes" instead of "Holmes"
Also I've seen the show, although there is only 3 episodes on Netflix Canada, his deductions are mind blowing almost to the point of absurdity. Like it non the less.
That's because what Holmes does isn't deduction at all. Artur Conan Doyle was a good writer, but he was also an idiot. What Sherlock does is called abductive reasoning. And it's based on guessing the most likely answer. And it's never 100% correct like in movies and TV shows because in real life the possibilities are endless. I was actually disappointed by the first episode when Sherlock failed to realize that it was the
taxi driver, not the passenger.
It was so obvious. And he also uses inductive reasoning all the time. That's why I hate these detective shows. They don't know what they're talking about, but it all sounds so lovely to an average viewer. Star Trek is less fictional than Sherlock's reasoning skills.
The way he figures out something is more like the website akinator or the 20Q toy. Reducing the possibilities by asking questions and making observations. Leaving either the answer or something close to it. Sherlock actually gets a few things wrong because he doesn't have a vital piece of information with him. The more i read the stories, it's surprising how much of his observations are things us ordinary folk could spot if we took the time to think about it.
