If you cannot stop of your own will, there is no hope for you, since you will most likely relapse even with medication.
Someone missed the point of the thread.
The point is inconsequential when the recources put into this can easily be put ot better use.

The point may or may not be moot, but I still think you missed it.

Then you are correct, because I merely skimmed through the entire thing, it is hihgly likely I missed more than one point, if there was infact a point or points.

Thank you.

What do you think of a drug that made it easier for an alcoholic trying to quit to resist alcohol? Was basically the gist of it.

Im not a Scientologist, but I dont like Pharmeceutical companies and all their so called cures and preventatives.

If these people really were philanthropic, their drugs wouldnt be nearly as expensive.

I agree, but if it works?

Read Stoic philosophy - I beat alcohol and cocaine, went back to school, and am currently working on my dissertation. Reason is all you need...

Like alot of people have been saying, including me, even if it works it is still unnecessary. The recources could be poured into something more beneficial.

I've heard tell of a hallucinogen used by South American (?) tribes for initiation rites that induces such dreadful visions and feelings that your psyche is basically reformatted (woo, psycho-technobabble). Apparently Westerners sometimes use it to kick heroin addiction and the like. If you're going to quit, do it like a man..

That's hardly cliched. It's a theory that's been under attack for years. I can't figure out who stands to directly profit from the status quo of alcoholics anonymous and all the other organizations that declare alcoholism a disease (does anyone else still laugh at this), but they defend these dated, obsolete ideals as if their life depended on it.
So, AA stand behind "DON'T DRINK" not "drink safley"?

Odd, you'd think that'd do more harm than good.

I think a good cure would be to stop drinking.

Then again, I'm no doctor.
As a Doctor, I recommend this course of action.

You'd think that, but alcohol withdrawal is the only withdrawal you can die from. So if you're an extreme alcoholic and start going cold turkey, you're running the risk of death.
Then we slowly stop drinking, ease them off it.
It might sound unsympathetic, but these replies are both truthful and hilarious.

You would have thought, but somehow I doubt that it is that easy.
But it is a cure.
A point well made. I am often tempted to start smoking, just to prove how easy it is to stop. But somehow I think that would end badly for me.
I always wanted to go a step further.

Try cocaine and see if I could stop it.

One day I will do it... One day.

Alcoholism isn't a disease, it is an addiction.

I hate it when people say that it's a disease.

To be honest though, how much of a dick would you feel a few months down the line... sat in an abandoned house smoking out of a spoon.
I'd be too stoned to care
