I have some extra spending money (oh it's been so long...) and was considering buying a fun multiplayer shooter. Whats one that has a decent amount of people online, is good fun, and can run on a middle-of-the-line PC?

Don't say TF2, I have it already.

First, please define what you mean by middle of the line. Rough longitude suffices.

Second, Left4Dead.

What shooters do you already have besides that?

I recommend F.E.A.R.

Vanilla deathmatch at its finest.

You said multiplayer?

Play Quake Live. (free, runs in browser)
Or CS, I guess if that's your kind of thing.

I think TF2 is actually your best bet, at least until Battlefield 1943 comes out (if it is what it should be.)

I can never stop recommending Left 4 Dead. You either do the co-op or versus. If you do the co-op, you work together, or die.

And the versus, well, it's just fun to puke on someone with a boomer. lol

Like all valve games, if you're looking for a mainstream game, cod 4 (although if you're looking for a REAL shooter don't).

Oh and Deus Ex (eventhough it's old and it's multiplayer is not that great, the singleplayer more than makes up for it!)

CoD4, L4D, HL1 and 2 and CSS. For the latter you really need to find a proper server - wich I have, the second one is most fun with friends but always a blast if you ask me. I can only comment on the singleplayer from CoD4, wich I love to bits. Same with HL2, but I must say that Deathmatch (e.a, the online mode) can be great (chaotic) fun as well. But you've also got FEAR, STALKER, hell craploads of shooters, it would be helpfull if we would know what you already have ;-)

Call of Duty 4, Half-Life 2 Deathmatch, and Left 4 Dead. All good, and all capable of running on most machines.

Half-Life series, and Left 4 Dead.

Need more info about your PC before I say more.

Halo:CE, COD4 (on the 360), a few little free shooters, and Left 4 Dead. I'll look into F.E.A.R.

Get Battlefield: Bad Company and the Half-Life games.
I rented Bad Company once, great fun. But I'm trying to find some fun PC titles since the outlook on my ability to keep paying for Live is pretty bleak.

How about the slower-paced, highly-realistic, super-tense Red Orchestra? It is my favorite online shooter. It's like Team Fortress 2 except you need to conserve your ammo and make effective use of cover.
