Are you avoiding copyright infringement, Mr. Gandalfur?

I think English isn't his native language.

Anyway, it would be hard to make a Harry Potter MMO outside of a school setting. It would pretty much turn into The Secret World.
Correctomundo. The name of the character Gandalf actually comes from the Old-Norse word Gandálfur which just means wizard. And it's not like I'm frequently mispelling or tweaking the name twenty times in each sentence.

Anyway, a Harry Potter MMO sounds just as implausible as a Doctor Who MMO which is apparently in the making.

You know, I swear that there already was a free browser mmo based on Harry Potter.

Of course you could make it work. That's the great thing about art. ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!!!

I loved the magic battle in the 5th HP movie, it's one of the reasons it's my favourite, cause we actually see a proper battle for once. However, there is a problem. Why would you want a HP MMO when there already a fuck ton of MMO's with magic very similar to HP?

It would be tricky, because the magic system in the books is fairly nonsensical.

Sure, it'd just take effort, as games are wont to do.

The world's already there, so there's not much design needed for that, just implementation. My suggestion for gameplay could be thought of as BioShock without guns. There would be some sort of RPG-element system for acquiring and possibly even leveling up spells which you would use by aiming and firing 3rd person shooter style. It would also be beneficial to have both a hotkey system for spells you wish to switch rapidly between (Reducto, Stupifey) and a keybinding system for spells you want to stay in the same place (I would want Protego on SHIFT and Lumos/Nox on, say, V).

I think this could actually be made to be quite fun, and as these folks [http://harrypotterspells.net/] can tell us, there are plenty of spells in Harry Potter to keep players busy leveling up until an expansion can be released.

So, yeah. Any studio that wants to do this, I think it's worth a go.

My hole point was not to be like the movies! I mean why would you want to be a student when you could be an adult!

Because it is boring? Plus it doesn't make that much sense if you start as an adult knowing, absolutly no magic what so ever and then have to train. The witches and wizards in Harry Potter start at a young age.
Mmmm good point but i do have an idea:
The schools would be the tutorials with Fallout 3 style flash forwards! So you start at year one and learn the basic controls and stuff like that THEN you jump to year five and you learn some basic combat when stuff gose batshit at the school and THEN you jump at the final year! Here you learn more advance stuff like MMO mechanics and you also get to chose between the two factions at the end! What to you think?

continuity would be a living hell in my opinion. the books, short stories she's made since, and all the lore. and how would they fit leveling mechanics. it would be hard to make the gameplay mechanics match the world's lore.
