I'd have to agree with Left 4 Dead, the AI is actually pretty strong, if somewhat predictable in their foibles.

I found the Crysis and Crysis Warhead AI to be awesome (Barring the occasional lapse)
They flanked you and added alot of the game for me at least.

Half-Life 2. The only thing about the rebels that has ever irritated me is their insistence on reminding me to reload. Running around with Alyx is absolutely perfect - I don't need to babysit her, and she's capable of dealing out some serious punishment. Additionally, she has never once shot me or jumped into my line of fire.
Alyx is the perfect teammate. :D
And do the COD teammate that run around count?
Cause at least they soak up bullets and sometimes finish off an enemey. And in 5, they do toss back nades.

Star Wars: Republic commando. The three squad members were moderately competent, followed orders clearly and were deadly when set up properly in firing positions.

I love the simple fact that they (The rebels at least) don't like to play "Catch the bullet"

Yet they still like to play "clutter the hallways and get in Gordon's way".

That is, if the direction to the position is clear of enemies or an oddity in the map. The whole team already set up and good to go is unstoppable, but when you send them a little too far off, they'll insist on moving the wrong side of cover to get shot at, then they'll be downed and another squad member will automatically drop what he's doing and go to heal him, again on the wrong side of cover, etc, etc. As you can tell, I had a lot of this on my play-through.

In Red Alert 3, there is always a chance that your ally will forget to set up his MCV or get annihilated and wont do jack-shit.

Or in Halo where the marines riding on your tank fires a rocket while you're too close to a wall and blows everyone up.

Strange, I didn't have any trouble. The game interface clearly shows on which side of the cover they'll set up on and the pathfinding is generally quite good. Also, I've rarely had them try and revive fallen team members in the middle of a fight unless instructed to do so.

Granted, there were the occasional blunders, I'll admit, but they were more exceptions to the rule. Overall, I felt like I could rely on my squad and they could win battles on their own if properly directed.

I'd have to say Left 4 Dead. Each of the AI characters seems to have his/her own personality (although they will ALL waste health kits keeping you at full health, whether you like it or not) and tend to act intelligently. I honestly can't say I've had them play "catch the bullet" once in the hours I've played the game. Often, they're better than some of the players I play with...

The politically correct term is SYNTHETIC, Sir.

+3 cookies if you get the reference.

Left 4 Dead, Republic Commando, and Halflife 2 have pretty decent AI. I've yet to actually meet AI that was intelligent though- especially ALLIED AI. Enemies always seem smarter.

Oh, Gears of War 2 had some -okay- partner AI. Gears of War 1...well... they were useful for soaking bullets, thats about it.

Some of the best friendly A.I I've seen recently would have to be Left 4 Dead and Half-Life 2 (As already mentioned many times), but honourable mentions go to Gears of War 2 (Which in my opinion significantly improved on the A.I from the first) and Call of Duty 4's Captain MacMillan, who has godly aim.

And lets not forget their ability to heal you or let them finish up then heal you.

I also would like to point out Left 4 Dead's inteligent AI though I do feel they need to add a "Drop everything and HELP ME NOW" button like in Republic Commando. To many times I have see AI close to me who failed to notice me being attacked by a hunter, smoker, etc.

AI companions....the bane of any stealth based player.
Agreed totally. On my second Fallout 3 playthrough I'm trying to play as a stealthy character with pistols, but I also ended up with jericho and dogmeat far earlier on than I'd got a companion on my main character. Powerful as they are, I'm often finding them doing all the damage as my weapons are largely useless unless sneaking (scoped magnum for example)

@HL2: Alyx is awesome; the best AI companion I've ever come across. However, the rebels in HL2 are a bit less amazin; they're good fighters and medics are very useful, but as has been said, their pathfinding is horrible, and I get really annoyed getting stuck behind them

Red Alert 3. Allies are not even optional - but they're not stupid, and help you out to a decent extent.
I'd also agree with Half-Life 2.
I have to disagree with you on RA3. Yeah they can maintain themselves but they can't help with planned battle tactics. I played all them all through with my friend Geth. Must say a Co-op RTS was a pretty novelty experience.

I concur, although the hallway thing is quickly fixed by shouting at the screen, its like the NPC's can hear my bloodcluddling roar.

the Metal Gear series is also of note, although to be fair the AI buddy scenes in those games are heavily scripted, but clever in that the first playthrough you don't really notice (possibly owing to the fact that Metal Gear doesn't want you to play it).

Did anyone else enjoy the antlions as companions?, I found myself making kissing noises at them whenever they did that little shrill.

its either a testament to valves ability to create amazing characters and creatures or the fact that i'm batshit insane.

p.s. Barney Calhoun ROCKS !
