Well the decade of the new millennium is drawing to a close and 2010 is just around the corner. Frankly this decade could go fuck itself musically. Bands like My Chemical Romance and Disturbed and rappers like Lil' John and Lil' Wayne didn't bring anything that has brought my attention musically speaking: I was more or less concerned with the early 90s.

But now I must bury the hatchet, as a new decade emerges, it appears that music is growing out of it's angsty teenager phase into something else that might just be decent, that is if we as people decide to make it so.

So my question to you people is this: What will this decade bring musically? Will it bring forth a decade of actually good music or just more of the same? What songs and bands shall define this coming decade?

I'm sure they do.

Every decade has shitty music. You just don't hear about the older ones cos, well, they were too shitty to mention.
This decade I have enjoyed music from the Gaslight Anthem, Frank Turner, the White Stripes, the View....I could go on and on.

Last few decades the "new" sounds have been rap and the like, and other genres have been getting more and more "retro"
Hopefully soon there will be more inventive new music, developing on existing styles rather than just sticking with them

This generation of music is going to be remembered for bad Rap and Katie Perry, so woop de doo there. I'm hoping we get a rebirth of New Romanticism in England, the music then rocked and its starting to become quite popular again, spandau ballet even reformed.

Also we need to start calling the new decade the 20's, as the 2020's sounds idiotic.

No the last year of this decade will be 2010. The first year of this decade (and the millennium) was 2001.
Reason, there was no year 0. If you count to 10, you count the 10.
Therefore there is another year after this for the decade to redeem itself, music wise.

I didn't think the 90's were that well characterized as a decade until recently...

The eventual shape of the "aughts" will be evident only at the end of the "tens" in about another 10 years. Still, I'm freaked out that I'll have seen 3 decades soon.

That and a lot of the people back then were too high to remember the music.

I was going to say that :p Well in terms of comercial music, it's probably one of the worst decades ever. But if you dig deep enough you find pretty cool stuff! In Portugal, these last years have seen some great portuguese bands - http://www.myspace.com/lobodoom http://www.myspace.com/meneaterdoom and internationally there are some cool things too, I just don't feel like looking for them :p I guess in 20 years no one will remember the jonas brothers but themselves; it's always good music and terrible music that's remembered. The jonas brothers are neither of these, when you think about it :p

Every decade brings forth new material that the last generation believed to "suck".

More so, there's no escaping pop culture. If something, anything can make money, they're going to milk the hell out of it.

Why does this sound so familiar?

Let me tell you a story.
One day, there was a company. They made really good products! But the products were not for everyone. They didn't appeal to the masses, because the masses are stupid.
So the company died and their families starved to death.

The end.
Get it?
The reason there is a bunch of shit on the market is because people, as a whole, are stupid. They want simple, mindless shit.
That's what they're given.
This. Infinitely this.

The popular music of the time, always has been and always will be terrible, regardless of what time period you are in. It's the nature of the beast, it doesn't get good for at least 15 years.

If you haven't found something this decade that you would consider of quality I suggest you haven't been looking hard enough.

EDIT: Does the new decade really start in 2011? I mean, the nineties ended with 1999, so why should the 2000's be any different? I know Wikipedia isn't a definitive source on anything but even they say the next decade begins in 2010.

It'll be a decade of our CURRENT younger generation growing out of High School and finding out that no one wants to put up with their whiny attitude and special needs.

The born-in-the-early-80's generation will reign supreme.

You are not allowed to disagree with this.

...

Because I'm your senior.

When I have to 'look hard enough' to see something 'of quality' in a car or home, I stop right there and move to the next.
