A New Decade Emerges

In 20 years, the music critics and nerds will have slimmed down this decade's music output to only the best music, as well as some of the bigger hits (whether they were good or not). I mean, there was a TON of shitty music released in the 1960s, yet you'll never hear it on classic rock radio.

For example, in 1966 a terrible song called "Winchester Cathedral" ([link]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wv_RfFmJ5nA&feature=related[/link]) was a huge hit, and even beat out The Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations" and The Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby" for the Grammy for Best Rock Song. Yes, in 1966, this pile of shit was considered better than either of those two masterpieces. And yet, you'll never, ever hear it on the radio.

Don't worry, culture has a great way of straining out the shit.

To be fair I don't any rise in any one particular genre, We're reaching a point in the music industry where the groups of people who have a musical ambition or what-have -you are all completely different.

I mean in the 60's and 70's the majority of seemed to like the same kind of music, and that set the tone for those decades. (well not as much as politics and what-have-you but shhh.)

Really what have we got going on that'll influence the next decade?
Nothing really.

Political rock, emo and Rap have pretty much been the majority of the market for this decade, and I don't really see it changing for 2010-20
I mean don't get me wrong it might JUST improve, but I somehow doubt it.

[This post has been brought to you by someone who honestly doesn't even care about music that much, the last time he did care about music was when he heard the Bucky O'Hare theme in the 90's]

Just as an after thought...

I can kind of see the rise of techno and synth music rising again as the decades roll by...

Not sure why.

That's what they're given.

Why does this sound so familiar?
Because I am not the only one who thinks that way. I'm sure you could list many popular comedians I've never heard of who have a very similar routine.
It sounds almost to me like something out of a movie. Or from a George Carlin routine.
And for that, I tip my hat to you.

I don't know, I'm always discovering something new to listen to, but usually, like said above, their band dies and their families starve because people are morons. But I love Muse, and they've enjoyed a pretty decent year. I'm also hoping for New Romanticism from Brittan; speaking of, David Byrne and Bryan Eno put out an album together recently and I love it. But there's other stuff out there, like My Morning Jacket and Bell X1 that are up-and-coming and enjoying some success. I just wish it wasn't all success due to hipsters. I hate hipsters.

It still won't bring any new classical music... which is a shame as thats all I listen too. Oh well, the old composers are still far better than anything else which has come along since.

Every decade has shitty music. You just don't hear about the older ones cos, well, they were too shitty to mention.
This decade I have enjoyed music from the Gaslight Anthem, Frank Turner, the White Stripes, the View....I could go on and on.

Last few decades the "new" sounds have been rap and the like, and other genres have been getting more and more "retro"
Hopefully soon there will be more inventive new music, developing on existing styles rather than just sticking with them
Goddamn you must be the smartest person I've seen on this site. I've been saying the same argument for years. You can actually say the same about any decade about any facet of life; we only remember the good because it's worth remembering.

If you haven't found something this decade that you would consider of quality I suggest you haven't been looking hard enough.
When I have to 'look hard enough' to see something 'of quality' in a car or home, I stop right there and move to the next.
When buying a house or car you have to find everything with it, as a whole, satisfactory to your wants and needs... now the way your housing/car market > music industry analogy appears to me, you're expecting the entire music industry to appeal to your wants and needs. I think the analogy should be that you equate each house/car on the market as one band/musician in the industry, that way not only does it make more sense but my 'not looking hard enough' statement works as well.

EDIT: Does the new decade really start in 2011? I mean, the nineties ended with 1999, so why should the 2000's be any different? I know Wikipedia isn't a definitive source on anything but even they say the next decade begins in 2010.
Well, from what I heard around the time of the millenium, it was stated that it didn't officially start until 2001 and as such the start of the millenium should have been celebrated then, not at the tail end of 1999. But then again, the marketing said it was to start in 2000.

So, if they say it's right, then that's just the way it goes. People fiddle around with time as it suits them. That's why I plan to add an extra day shortly. Look forward to it!

I don't think I have to look hard to figure out what shit looks and sounds like.

I actually quite like this song. 'Course your probably one of those people who don't know much about 60s music beyond what Hippies regurgitated. Back in the early 60s surf rock and the Beatles weren't all that popular YET. In fact, most surf was pretty much localized in So Cal and other beach areas. This kind of music was America from the 40s to to I guess '65.

And to everyone else this is a thread about the FUTURE, NOT the past. I'm not asking you to analyze our past music, I don't want your cynicism I just want predictions.

I think you misunderstood my post. I am positive about the future, and I believe that it's harder to see what will be well remembered in the future today because we don't know what will last and what will be discarded. That's why I used the example of "Winchester Cathedral". I don't particularly care for it, (and I apologize for slagging it so hard) but I do think it's fair to say that it's not as well remembered as the other songs I mentioned, whether you like them as much or not. Lastly, by 1966, pop music had changed. I really don't think "Winchester Cathedral" (or songs like it) really represented where music was at the time. The Beatles had released Revolver, Bob Dylan just recorded "Like A Rolling Stone" and Brian Wilson was going nuts. Just to name a few. Plus you had people like Lou Reed and Frank Zappa really weirding up popular music.

Oh, and surf rock was actually very popular in the late 50s and early 60s, and it was the arrival of The Beatles to America in 1963 that (more or less) prompted its demise. "Good Vibrations" is closer to a Beatles song than a surf song.

Oh, and I took a class in college about music in the 1960s. So, yeah, I consider The Beatles to be the greatest rock band ever, but that doesn't mean I don't totally appreciate (or am aware of) Motown and jazz and Ray Charles and what have you. Look, I respect your opinion, but I would prefer if my knowledge of the subject wasn't immediately called into question. Then again, given the general level of knowledge on subjects outside of LOLcats and leet-speak amongst your average Internet user, I can forgive you.

Well I certainly don't want my knowledge being called into question. Yes I was unaware of exactly how popular surf music was and I'm also aware of the mass euphoria surrounding the Beatles. Additionally and unfortunately for you, I'm one of those people who don't really care if you took a class about it, what matters is presentation. Fuck I could search Wikipedia for every last unknown bit about the Beatles. Does that make me an expert?

Look whatever. We all live in our own colored submarine isolated by the breathless ocean.

Ah, well, I'm not much for movies, and I've only seen a bit of George Carlin, but I have, of course, heard of his awesomeness.
So thank you!
No problem. Anything that reminds the world of George Carlin is needed more than ever these days.
