As of now, I finally am commited to buying a new gaming computer. My current one has me only playing oblivion on it, due to the amount of oblivion stuff I have on it. Sure I have some other games for it but its mostly oblivion stuff ex my mods, saves, downloads

So I decided to buy a new computer, without going throgh the hell of making one like I did with my first.

The goal of this one is to be cheap, have memory, and play basic gamess.

Cheap 400-800$
Basic games: Sims, Age of Empires, spore ect..

I asked someone on another forum about buying an already made computer from ibuypower.com

He said that he personnaly wouldnt buy a preessembled computer, but I'm not going through the hell that was my first computer!

So tell me will this

http://www.ibuypower.com/ibp/store/configurator.aspx?mid=119

Be able to play atleast some games; ie spore, sims, AOE

will it be able to play oblivion?

Whats the problem with pre-essembled computers

Keep your old PC. Buy an Xbox.
I have an xbox, I even prefer it over my pc, but still with some extra cash around I wouldn't mind being able to play some of those mentioned games

When i bought mine, I didn't get a pre-essembled one in the sense that i picked out all the parts myself, but since the company would assemble the computer with all the parts i picked for no extra charge i figured why not, saves me some time.

Fair point, but you could put some of the money towards new games and extending Xbox LIVE for 12 months.

Well, I'm waiting for 'Operation Flashpoint 2: Dragon Rising' end of next month. Surely, there are some older releases you have missed from the big wave of releases last November?

He already has it... my god.

But yeah, that setup you have should play those games you said pretty well. If I were you, I'd upgrade to the Quad-Core that doesn't cost any extra, but that's just me. But if you want a really good Gaming computer, don't be afraid to go to the more expensive end of your budget... it'll be well worth it.

First of all, building your own computer is not as difficult as it sounds, its better for you in the long run (the knowledge will GREATLY benefit you), you can get alot more banf for your buck, and one's assembled and maintained at home tend to last longer.

Also, DO NOT BUY FROM IBUYPOWER OR CYBERPOWER. They are notorious for building machines of laughably low quality. There are literal thousands of horror stories. You are much better off either getting components for a pc from or buying a prebuilt from Newegg.com. It's a great site with great prices with a great reputation.

As for the limit: is this just the tower? (ie, do you want this price to include the monitor and/or the speakers and/or the mouse and/or the keyboard?). Do you have a prefference for cpu and/or gpu brands? What kind of longevity do you want this machine to have? Will that limit, you may be pretty much limiting yourself to a dual core, which is severely restricting.

The IBUYPOWER machine: Like I said, I wouldn't buy from them anyway, but...I DON'T think that that would be able to handle alot of games well. The processor isn't bad, but the 2g of ram and the video card may limit you somewhat. I'm not positive on this, but I'm fairly certain. A friend of mine can run Oblivion pretty well, but he's on a quad core with 4g of ram and an 8800gtx (http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best-graphics-card,2118-7.html).

I've just ordered the components for my machine, and the total package (tower, monitor, speakers, etc) came up to just under $1500. I also wanted my pc to have decent longevity and upgradeability. In terms of getting the most out of your pc, that is what one should really shoot for.

Actually I've found that pricewatch.com is a great place to shop around sites for parts, but for some reason they don't show tigerdirect on their site.

Thanks for letting me know. I saw an add on some gaming mag and thought about it. Ill check that newegg site your talkin about.

As the limit: All together I would like it to cost about 600-1000 dollars, the cheaper the better. I thought about getting a gaming labtop as well. No preferences

Thanks a lot

Here to help :)

Also, a little research can go a long way. In one month of looking around the web a few days a week, I learned an incredible amount. Tom's Hardware is your FRIEND :)

The problem is that they can cost up to $100 more for the service costs of installing the hardware. I'm not entirely clear on that extra cost because I'm converting and because when I checked it was before the "credit crisis" had started. But it'll definately cost you more to have it pre-assembled.

none of the games he suggested are on xbox (to my knowledge) beside, pc is far better than console.
Agreed. The PC is more versatile and can be upgraded, but it is also more expensive (depending on how many games you get for it; given that Microsoft recoups the cost of their hardware by increasing the cost of the 360's games - just compare the prices in the shops). So, if you pick only a few games (preferably different genres that you like) and a 360 the total cost will always be lower than the equivalent PC bundle, unless you resort to crime and get hold of games off the internet - whether they be retro roms or leaked upcoming releases.

Besides, as you have a PC you must be aware that the web (indeed, The Escapist & Zero Punctuation) is often a lot more fun than any game...

Money needs to be spent on your router, broadband deal, don't forget.

I have an HP a1700n Tower and am going to be getting a nVidia GeForce 8800 GTX graphics card to replace my aging GeForce 6150 LE.
The power supply in my box is still stock and I think I may need a new one for the card. Does anybody have a recommendation? From what I see, the card has a 4+4 Pin power outlet (That or a 6 Pin) and I only have 4 Pins and a SATA.
I hear from a friend that I should also make sure the card gets a 500 watt feed if I'm going to do anything that makes it chug hard.
