A new name for harassers/extremists

Pretty sure it's seen as a mild curse in England. Yet, in the US it's a pretty offensive word. I've known plenty of people who absolutely hated the word and would never use it or allow others to use it.

Not mild as such (at least in my corner of the country), it's still the 'harshest' of the common array of curses. But unlike the US, it's not gendered, so there's a lot less stigma around using it. Americans really seem to shy away from the word in all circumstances, whereas while I wouldn't use it around the family, none of my mates would look askance if I told them about some **** in a BMW that almost ran me over.

I know that leaves only independent research that collects self reported data but than again, it's only source that is not tainted by any ideology.

I propose the phrase "Single-Perspective Extremist Wiseling." The phrase denotes the singular and narrow focus of the individual due to a disregard for the perspectives of others, the considerable lengths a persistent and dedicated invidiual will go to in order to make a point, and the common (but not universal) presumption of possessing wisdom beyond their years or their peers albeit written in the most polite way I could find in the dictionary (or at least more polite than the first word starting with W that came to mind).

As "Single-Perspective Extremist Wiselings" is an unwieldy phrase, it can be constructively shortened to just SPEWs, which I think is both a convenient and rather evocative acroynm. It's also inoffensive in social circles, as no one can claim that any category of people is being treated pejoratively with the term. Because the phrase and the words comprising it are perfectly neutral and can apply accurately to any possible individual, it simply becomes descriptive of the individual's behavior as opposed to referential of a group or stereotype.

Mhh "Spew" actually sounds good, if one wants to up the ante it can be adapted to
"single-perspective-extremist-wanker"
if one wants to address that males (probably) make up the bigger part of the spews

plus it can be used in the sense that most of what they do is "to spew bile"

To those who brought up the issue of division, that´s kinda the purpose to differentiate those from the gamers so the media has a harder time throwing gamers into the same buckets with them.
When media addresses those people as gamers its not because the play video games but for being single minded extremists.
However since there is no further differentiation they default back to gamer and thus potentially insult and vilify all gamers by doing so.

Look at it like having a gangrenous pinky toe. I would rather just chop the toe of then risk loosing the entire foot.

I think **** is quite fitting but lets engage in a little thought experiment.
Someone who has no connection to games reads an article about e.g. a woman being harassed online and finds the word refering to the person guilty of said harassment.
That person might not know the term used and googles it. If the result is just a random insult like **** they might see that this person is being justly insulted but thats it, they are just insulted.
But if that person looks up the definition and finds something along the line "person who harasses people online, sends death threads because his game got a content patch etc." and then something like" shunned in online forums and gaming" then this sends a clear message to the world that the gaming community opposes those people.

If we can change the meaning of the word **** to that, awesome^^ i just don´t think that will happen.

The "power" of the word increased the more people use it, hence why i should be something that´s catchy enough to....well catch on and its meaning should be discernible from the term itself.

In the UK, we use the word **** as an insult for anyone. We don't discriminate with our insults. Can't say it on the BBC though.

I know that it's meant as a joke, I just think it's counterproductive. I have similar objections when it comes to people decrying slut-shaming by way of virgin-shaming. The message simply isn't as convincing when you're doing the very thing you're decrying (or something close to it).

I don't know what exactly feminists are really fighting for on the games side of things - I'm supposing less female characters whose outfit is essentially 80% skin? - but I know that they shouldn't be harassed by subhumans who either say these things because they feel invincible behind their shroud of anonymity, or because they actually believe these things and, as such, should be purged from the human gene pool as soon as possible. If you make rape/death threats, whether or not you're serious, you deserve some very harsh jail time - either you're being kept away from the decent public, or you're being taught that there is some shit you just don't joke about.

I wish threats/harassment on the internet was taken more seriously, by sites and the authorities in general. If a woman is called on the phone by some stranger and threatened, won't the police work to track down the caller and arrest them? Why is it different with the internet? I can understand if the threat's from a different country, I don't know how things go with a threat made through a long-distance phone call, but on a website a perma-ban should be made more common.

And yes, permanently banning one account won't stop the subhuman from simply making a new account. In that case, track down the person making those same accounts, THEN have the authorities knocking on their door and bringing them in. This really doesn't sound that unreasonable; internet correspondence is bigger today than anyone could predict, letting people chat with others all over the world - as such, we should make it so those who abuse their anonymity to be assholes are punished like the children that they are.
