Make Mako the lead character, Make Chuck the boss of the worlds military and fuse technology with the Kaiju in an attempt to destroy new Mark 6 Jagers with future tech.

I'd be up for this. Pacific Rim may not be the most high-class movie, but it has spirit and charm and it's a great blockbuster action flick. And it's actually pretty uplifting too. In this age of grimdark Superman movies and dumb action films that don't even pretend to be about anything, a robots-punching-monsters film that has a few simple but subtle ideas is a great thing. A sequel could ramp up the action, have lots of new designs for mechs and monsters, and maybe explore some of the ideas set out in the first film with greater depth. Imagine delving into what exactly a Kaiju-based society is like, or how the nations use Jaegers now that Kaijus are gone. Hell, I'd even be up for them coming back or an invasion to their territory.

This post contains Pacific Rim spoilers. Please read at your own risk.

I didn't think there was ever any doubt that Pacific Rim could have a sequel...the main question is where do they go from here? The rift was blown up and the jaeger program has been discontinued and all the robots have been destroyed. I guess a new rift could open up as I doubt that one explosion destroyed the entire world that was in there and they could potentially build new jaegers...or they could do a prequel...but see the problem with that is anything after feels like a cop out, and anything before feels underwhelming.

The thing I've always found really odd about Pacific Rim though, and I don't think I can say this about any other film...

The opening of the movie tells the story of Trespasser, the first Kaiju to break through, long before jaegers and how it took like six days for them to take it down.

That's like 15 seconds of the film...and yet I feel like that could have easily made its own movie. I would have sat down to a movie all about humanity trying to destroy Trespasser. He was an awesome Kaiju.

That said, I love Pacific Rim, and while I don't think it needs a sequel, and I dunno if I'd say I want one, you can bet your ass I'd go see one.

And on a similar note, what's with this whole talk of Godzilla/Pacific Rim cross-over? Who else thinks that sounds like a terrible idea? Both series kinda have their own rules and structure set up, and I don't think they would play well off each other. Besides, who do you even root for? No Godzilla fan wants Godzilla to lose, but Jaegers aren't supposed to lose either. Would it just be like most vs. movies that end in some stalemate?

Well, they don't have to be enemies, right? What if there are Jaegers, Godzilla AND Aliens? What if Jaegers and Godzilla team-up?
Semi-quoting last SBFP podcast: "This thing is gigantic monstrousity, but it is OUR gigantic monstrousity!"

Oh... Hell...Yeah...

OT: I would definitely watch a sequel, but I'd prefer a prequel about Jaegers that are not Gipsy. I'd like to see Cherno, Typhoon and Coyote Tango in action once more.

Hmm...I guess I never really thought about it that way. Sort of a Jet Jaguar type deal. I suppose that could work. You have thoroughly convinced me. I now believe that a crossover between the two doesn't have to be a horrible idea (still not a fan of the idea, but I guess it's true it doesn't simply have to be a Godzilla/Jaeger throwdown. They could potentially do something interesting with the idea)

...I know that sounded like sarcasm, but it was sincere.

To show my sincerity, my new friend, let us enjoy this image together.

I would love to see a Pacific Rim Sequel, a concept I was thinking of was that now that the Kaiju are gone the nations of the world begin recreating Jaegers for their own militaries causing all future wars to end up being clashes of Jaegers. Just an idea I thought of one day so I could have an excuse to see a sequel exist and to finally see some big screen Jaeger vs Jaeger fights.

Spoilers ahead:

I can see how it can work, seeing as the two scientists are still 'drifted' with the alien hive mind thing (if the red eyes are still an indication. They also said about them taking over 'many' universes...

maybe it can start off with a global military Jaeger throwdown, with a kaiju invasion interruption, followed by a GTFO we're busy fighting here guys blamfest, then ????, profit

I quite liked the original movie but I don't think that there is enough room for a sequel. As others have pointed out the Kaiju invasion was stopped.
And the makers of the Kaiju were given a good idea of what it's like to have an intruder enter their world and destroy stuff after Gypsy Danger became a suicide bomber.

I think that the writers have written themselves into a corner here and it will interesting to see if they can avoid a Deus Ex Machina setup for the second movie

Can't see how they would go about making another film, the portal got closed off at the end of the first one after all.
the aliens have the technology to open up a new one, if they can open 1 up, what makes you think they couldn't open up another? how about say? in the Atlantic, and call it Atlantic Rim.

It doesn't need a sequel. The original movie while fun made 0 sense. The plot and story was such a mess that if it had tried to sell itself as more than excuse to watch giant robots beat up giant monsters I'd of been more disappointed than I was when I caught it in theaters.

But of course this is hollywood who are more deadset on destroying any profitable franchise second only to the games industry. So it will get a sequel, and another sequel and another sequel until its no longer profitable.
i guess you haven't watched Gundam, Evangelion, Full Metal Panic!, Gurren Lagan, Patlabor, S.T.R.A.I.N., Majestic Prince, Mawaru Penguin Drum, etc. as they make about as much sense.

No I really haven't. I'm not a huge fan of big monsters fighting robots.

here is an idea, we royally pissed them off with that suicide bombing run, so the come back to get revenge.

I could understand certain aspects of why they made PacRim the way they did. There are certain aspects of the film that are absolute standard movie elements- the death of a friend, years as a loner wasting your life, last ditch recruitment of the last best hope, mentor/father mentee/daughter love/work triangle, 17% comedy, integration, failure, redemption, sacrifice, victory, happy ending.

My prediction is that the sequel will be reworked into a rehash of the above film-- give the audience the same thing again-- rather than a proper continuation of the franchise. See the Men in Black movies to illustrate what I expect of the series.

But how do they get here? They already know that we can shut off their access on demand and since they are in another dimension they can't exactly travel through "conventional" space to get here. I suppose that they could go to another planet and send them in through spaceships but that has one major flaw: They can be detected by radar/sonar/lidar and shot down/intercepted before they land

End of Pacific Rim: We are all actually Kaiju, Mass Produced Jaeger's rip apart Sasha Kaidanovsky, Mako Mori becomes a Giant Naked Mako Mori, and everybody melts into tang.

Sure, 400 million is an impressive number but when you factor in the production budget of almost 200 million, that makes those numbers not overly great since you have to bring in other sources of cost that aren't always accounted for publicly, like marketing.
But look at those other films he mentioned. A couple of them had lower budgets, but films like Star Trek and Batman Begins made less money from similar production budgets, but are considered big successes that never had any question that sequels would be produced. Pacific Rim may not have been the most successful film ever, but it's easily on a par with lots of other films that did well enough to justify a continued franchise.

Prequel.

Either that or stick with the "logic" of the first film - "Fuck it, there are aliens. Commence punching."

Loved seeing it in the cinema, was way to loud though, loudest film I ever did see! Yes to a sequel, though no Idris would be a blow I feel.
