Does Pacific Rim need a sequel? No. Would i like one to be made? Yes. :) Hopefully they will come up with something good, a prequel showing the first attacks and the lead up to the Jaegars would be good. Though im not sure if that story really needs to be told. Since they shut the rift, can they really have another rift open? Guess they could have a number of them open in a proper attack on earth? But if they decide to leave it as a one off movie, im fine with that as well.
would be kinda cool if a world war breaks out over the last remaining resources as there was alredy heavy rationing in the first one, so Jaegars become the front line troops. It's a continuation of the story rather then a retelling of the first one, and Giant robot fight outer giant robots, what's not to love.

Good.

The original, while not Academy Awards material, was exactly the reason I go to cinemas... Huge spectacle made to entertain first with simple concepts fun.

I quite liked the original movie but I don't think that there is enough room for a sequel. As others have pointed out the Kaiju invasion was stopped.
And the makers of the Kaiju were given a good idea of what it's like to have an intruder enter their world and destroy stuff after Gypsy Danger became a suicide bomber.

I think that the writers have written themselves into a corner here and it will interesting to see if they can avoid a Deus Ex Machina setup for the second movie
here is an idea, we royally pissed them off with that suicide bombing run, so the come back to get revenge.
But how do they get here? They already know that we can shut off their access on demand and since they are in another dimension they can't exactly travel through "conventional" space to get here. I suppose that they could go to another planet and send them in through spaceships but that has one major flaw: They can be detected by radar/sonar/lidar and shot down/intercepted before they land
on demand? no we can't, we had to send a mech riding on the corpse of a kaiju, in order to have it self-destruct. that isn't on demand. and they can't simply be shot down, that much was proven, that is the reason they made mechs to begin with.

I'd kind of rather they not try to stretch a franchise out of something that was so neatly tied up.

Who says it needs to be monsters again? Maybe hitler really did have a secret moonbase and he was building his own giant robots.

Nonsensical awesomeness is cool.
