My friends and I all were discussing what animes we like and I came up with a realization: Everybody likes something different when it comes to what you like in an anime. So then:

What Do YOU like in an anime?

Edit:
I like a good story that's unpredictable and well developed characters.

Well developed characters most of all (not the bourgeois, cliche ones used in a lot of anime, but there are a few good ones out there), secondary to that a good intricate plot that doesn't utilise unnecessary filler (rules out almost all of them) and lastly good fight scenes.

European medieval fantasy type settings, like in Scrapped Princess. And if anyone can recommend a good one, please let me know; especially if you know of a place online where I can watch it.

Giant robots, super powers, flimsy story and women who look like strippers.

Oh wait.... what do I like?

Haven't heard mention of that anime from anyone in awhile. I rather enjoyed that one, too.

An interesting story with engaging character. Like, y'know, most media.

I also love fantastic realism, which is more present in anime and manga (very generally speaking).

The story is what makes or breaks the anime for me. Even so-called stock characters can be interesting if done right.

Uh, what? Try Big O/Eureka 7/RahXephon. Giant robots WITH good story and characters.

I believe Eureka 7 pretty well sums it up. Great story, well developed characters, and good action sequences. So, yeah, pretty much that.

Unique powers(more than one dammit!! i hate people with single attacks used throughout an entire series) without loads of stupid rules attached. Complete randomness is a good thing too.

Humor and emotion, anything that gives a feeling of realism and avoids excessive overdramatic craziness.

Sometimes, one that tries to get a point across about life, like Trigun.

Relatable and well-developed characters are the big thing for me, though I'll definitely take a good story and somewhat less-developed but still likable characters, if need be (Steel Angel Kurumi comes to mind).

...that's pretty much it. I do like certain amounts of humor (or a show that takes itself seriously but only in the appropriate moments). The only other things I can think of are certain genres, but I'll even watch mecha (which I'm not a big fan of, otherwise) for the characters. Then again, I read more manga than watch anime, so...

Oh, and I'll take a fanservice-heavy anime if it's peppered with enough humor. Otherwise, it's vaguely insulting.

Good storytelling, no filler arcs, no overly dumb girls("Oops, I just fell into your lap accidently and my boobs spilled out of my shirt"), good humor, cool characters. I also like to see a badass female character kick butt at least once.
