Hey Escapees, playing some Dungeons and Dragons as a Chaotic Neutral rogue and have come into an impass.

Two rules of CN are

-You shall not harm the innocent.

And that has collided with

-You shall honor no authority above yourself and pursue pleasure.

Basically, I've been given an option to either free some slaves without gain, or two let the Slavers have them and get some gold from the slavers.

I'm not turning them in myself, I've just wondered across this and I have to take one of the decisions.

So, Escapees, which one fits the Chaotic neutral alignment, should I.

A. Free the slaves for no reward

B. Let the Slaver keep them for money, but risk 'harming' the innocent.

1. Kill Slavers.

2. Free Slaves.

3. Kill Slaves.

That should just about do it.

EDIT: 4. Sell there looted possesions.

Chaotic Neutral in my understanding was you do what is most beneficial to you at the time. But you don't care about good or evil.

Negotiate a revolt with the slaves against the slavers and arm them so that they won't be harmed?

Take the money and walk off. If you feel evil, kill the slavers after taking the money.

Ask yourself whether you'd get more money from live slavers or from their looted corpses.

Freeing the slaves would lean towards a good act, where taking the money would be more playing into how the world exists. Slaves exist, slave owner's exist, you aren't making a judgment on the morality you are simply are engaging in an act that is in accordance with how the world works.

You're chaotic neutral. Go crazy. Build a shrine to the fish god Xerthul.
OT: Alignments are meant as a foundation not a guide. It depends on the personal character of the PC you created up to that point.

That's actually quite interesting, I mean Chaotic Neutral are usually materialistic for themselves and possibly a close circle of friends; but I wonder the ratio of Skin to money they can handle.

I mean, Han Solo could've shot Jabba and got rich that way, but he didn't want to risk skin for money.

Technically if you are going by straight alignment, I suppose you would kill the slavers, since chaotic types prize freedom and well, they are slavers. Then demand payment from the slaves. Maybe.

The true individual, the chaotic neutral character prizes their own freedom above all else. They do not want ties to either good or evil to influence them, preferring to make their own way as they see fit. Most chaotic neutral care nothing for people in their groups, have little to no allegiances, caring only for themselves

You are a chaotic neutral

Chaotic= Not bound by rules do whatever you want

Neutral= Not bound by others do whatever you want

Truly sir as a Chaotic Neutral you have no obligations to people nor any rule set. You are unpredictable and only serve your self.

So to answer your question:

Do whatever you want ;-)

In the end, a chaotic neutral character is the epitome of self preference. No one can tell you what your CN character would have to do. In this case, the behaviour rests entirely on the player's shoulders.

I would say to be true chaotic neutral, what you should do is sell the slaves to the slavers, then kill the slavers. Because what the slavers do is evil, and neutral is balance. And you get money, and people (the ex-slaves) like you. Bonus points if you get the slaves to help kill the slavers to lessen the danger to yourself.

If killing the slavers is too dangerous and not an option - free the slaves. It satifies dont harm the innocent, and you are not losing anything - just deciding not to take advantage of the innocent.

This is true, but Chaotic Neutral is inclined to do what is most pleasurable/profitable for themselves. Freeing the slaves at absolutely no benefit to oneself is more a Neutral Good alignment.
A true Chaotic Neutral would just take the money.
Another option is to free the slaves, then kill the slavers and take their money.

Or just free the slaves. It depends if you want to lean towards chaotic good, neutral neutral or chaotic evil.

Based on this:

"Above respect for life and good, or disregard for life and promotion of evil, the chaotic neutral places randomness and disorder. Good and evil are complimentary balance arms. Neither are preferred, nor must either prevail, for ultimate chaos would then suffer. This view of the cosmos holds that absolute freedom is necessary. Whether the individual exercising such freedom chooses to do good or evil is of no concern. After all, life itself is law and order, so death is a desirable end. Therefore, life can only be justified as a tool by which order is combated, and in the end it too will pass into entropy.

Chaotic neutral characters believe that there is no order to anything, including their own actions. With this as a guiding principle, they tend to follow whatever whim strikes them at the moment. Good and evil are irrelevant when making a decision.
This is the insurgent, the con-man, gambler, and high roller; the uncommitted freebooter seeking nothing more than self-gratification. This type of character will at least consider doing anything if they can find enjoyment or amusement. Life has meaning, but theirs has the greatest meaning. According to chaotic neutrals, laws and rules infringe on personal freedom and were meant to be broken. This character is always looking for the best deal, and will work with good, neutral, or evil to get it; as long as he comes out of the situation on top."

I think you need to find a middle ground.

You have no reason other than the repressed freedom of the slaves to motivate the killing of the slavers.

You have nothing but the monetary reward to motivate you into letting the slavers live.

So as chaotic neutral, I'd say you need to get both or neither.

I would say, kill the slavers, loot the bodies and tell the slaves to escape themselves if they wish for freedom while doing nothing to expedite that freedom (not counting killing the slavers). After all, life is a fight to break free of laws and restrictions.

Unless of course, you have some other character trait that allow you to derive pleasure or amusement from some other fourth or fifth solution.

What if the fight with the slavers is a real effort, and being materialistic Chaotic Neutral, I don't want to put my neck on the line for strangers?

This choice seems the most appropriate. Also, give the slaves a code word. As soon as you say, "RELEASE THE KRAKEN", that's when they should overthrow the slavers.
