So I have a copy of star wars knight of the old republic for the xbox and have tried to play it on my 360 but it's basicly unplayable thanks to the 360's shitty backwards compatibility. so now I'm hunting for a pc copy, not too easy for an old game but doing this has got me thinking could this possibility be a reasonable excuse to grab a torrent of the game.

I am actually tracking down a legitimate copy of the game but would it actually be piracy if I did just download it after all I have already paid for use of the intellectual property and do have the game disk, I just can't play it.

I guess you could argue that since I have the xbox version I haven't paid for the right to play it on the pc but what if I had a damaged pc game disk would it be ok to down load it then. I guess this is where services like steam come into play but I really don't like steam I prefer my games not to rely on a net connection.

It just strikes me as an interesting question - if you have paid for a game but lost or damaged the disk is it ok to download a pirate copy or is there really no excuse ever to pirate?

Well anyways my search for KOTOR 2 for the PC continues, wish me luck peoples :)

Your fault you screwed up the disc so no reason to even pirate it, plenty of places have Kotor 2 for sale online.

I personally don't see anything wrong with downloading a backup copy of a game that you already bought, so long as the system you download it for is the same one that you bought it for.

Also, this might help: KOTOR on Amazon [http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Knights-Republic-Battlefront-Commando/dp/B000HVTEX6/ref=sr_1_3?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1308583120&sr=1-3]

EDIT: Damnit, didn't see that you were looking for the second one: Try this link instead [http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Knights-Old-Republic-Pc/dp/B00027CXEM/ref=sr_1_2?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1308583120&sr=1-2]

I managed to find a copy at Best Buy, but I'm not sure if there are any Best Buy's where you live.

As for your question... you bought the disk, it got fucked in your care, buy a new one. You hold all the power when you buy physically, but you also hold all the responsibility.

So take care of your disks.

Amazon? Ebay? Any internet seller? Most have kotor 2. By the way Kotor 2 is **** and you shouldn't play it. Play Kotor 1 through another time, it will give you more pleasure.

Uhm... I think it also needs to be considered where he is. Not sure about import/export issues for New Zealand.

However I tend to doubt there isnt some sort of means for picking it up in NZ.

As for cross platform issues.. I dont think it flies. Owning a Nes copy of Final fantasy wont protect you if you downloaded it for a gba emulator. Physically owning the PS3 version of Black ops would not protect you from downloading the PC version.

I'm pretty sure people aren't allowed to recommend piracy in any form or for any reason on this forum, so asking here was useless, just like all of the other piracy threads. You might want to try another forum if you want to know what people in general think, or just do what you think is morally right.

Even asking on another forum is pointless really, because at the end of the day it's only your sense of right and wrong that should influence your decision. There's no real chance of being caught or getting in trouble over it, so it's a simple question of morality, and whether you personally believe it's OK or not in this situation.

I say go for it. You have a legit copy of the game and good games should never be buried from the public

I don't get involved in the piracy thing myself, but I don't really see why I should persecute someone that does. I don't see why piracy of music or video games so so wrong yet FYE and Gamestop can sell used items. The artists and developers aren't seeing any of the money off a used item.

Actually, the game plays horribly on 360s. My copy has a terrible audio glitch that occurs about every two minutes from the start of the game to the finish (kind of an obnoxious static noise). There are also some massive frame rate drops during combat.

I wouldn't call the game unplayable on the 360, but its a rough experience. I just love the game enough to put up with it.

OP: Assuming you aren't on a Mac (like me, otherwise I'd have it for mine), KotOR II isn't [http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=knights+of+the+old+republic+2+pc&_sacat=See-All-Categories] hard [http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp;jsessionid=BB87B06FB3EDA5339709F58A6BF8EA00.bbolsp-app01-35?_dyncharset=ISO-8859-1&_dynSessConf=547577071994576646&id=pcat17071&type=page&st=knights+of+the+old+republic+II&sc=Global&cp=1&nrp=15&sp=&qp=&list=n&iht=y&usc=All+Categories&ks=960] to find [http://www.game.co.uk/Games/PC-Games-and-Downloads/Role-Playing/Star-Wars-Knights-of-the-Old-Republic-II-The-Sith-Lords/~r324601/?s=knights+of+the+old+republic+II] for the PC.

Actually, if he owns a copy, its perfectly legal to download a backup.

You already paid for the game, you might as well pirate it. It would be the same as making a backup.

I would think if you bought a copy then it would be ok. But that's just my opinion and does not reflect the position of the Escapist on this subject.

Pft. This forum has a case of black and white syndrome. Bought just cause 2, legit for new. Turns out it was a second hand disc repackaged by Game with a key that was already in use and a CD that was utterly buggered. Game wouldnt do anything and Steam said i needed to take a bloody photo of it with my name and adress written on the manual to get a new key. Fuck that i thought and pirated it, snagging the pre-order goodies too. I think i was justified that bit of looting.
