It's been tried. The games I can think of are Battlezone and Battlezone II. I like them, but they weren't popular because the FPS junkies and the RTS nerds typically don't blend too much. I personally liked the concept and those games in particular, but admittedly I'm in the minority.

Battlezone games were awesome, they're pretty old though, and might not even run anymore, someone should re-xplore the concept, maybe a well off "Indie" dev and stick it on steam.

The first Halo was originally intended to play like that, way back in the initial beta-build.

I'm still waiting for an FPS where some players join as RTS-style commanders, and instead of playing as grunts get a top down view of the entire map. I just think it would be cool if there were players act solely as commanders issuing orders by voice-chat and such.
Savage 2 is a 3rd person "Shooter" where one player does that, it's pretty fun, there's Humans and the Beastmen as races, and each side has a few classes, all playing really different from each other, you have to build buildings and stuff, and the classes are unlocked when you build the appropriate building, etc etc.

It still ran on my last machine, which was XP (as is my new one). Dunno if it'll run on Vista though. I might reinstall it for giggles, I never did finish the campaign.

I think Rainbow Six Vegas technically counts as that type of game, in a way. You do control other units.

I have been wondering for about a week now...Would that combination work?
At first you are in command as Generic Fasictcommander calling the shot, then you play as a grunt on the field.

I know that there are alot of threads like this, but I dont think that I've seen one about this subject... And if there is one,I am sorry I wasted your time.
play the battlestation games, this is excacly what your sainf, except it aint first person.

Old game from 90's called machines was an RTS with assorted robots, and you could press a button to 'become' any unit and play FPS-style.
damn fun, but didn't work on winXP

There is a game that is very much what your describing, no technically about it. It's called, "Urban Assault". Cool opening video, as well as setting. Actually, they then made another game that is kind of like that called, "Project Nomads". Both are awesome, underrated games. Project Nomads is interesting because basically, it's the Gorillaz music video, "Feel Good Inc" with more steampunk and violence. Sadly, no one plays either anymore these days.

Raven squad does it http://www.ravensquad.com/media_videos.php

Don't think it was a particularly great game though

I think the battlezone series did that. The strategic base building interface was pretty intuitive, and in multiplayer games you could assign units to the other players in order to delegate tasks such as offense, defense, and resource gathering.

Actually, I think that could work well because it would depend upon your skill as a player whether your unit was successful in breaking up the enemy, not just on swarming your enemy. I could only see it working with a Kessen style engine though, because a) the pacing of that game was so slow that you could balance FPS with RTS without screwing yourself up and b) they did have an option to zoom in onto closer combat in a way that taking control of a character would have been quite easy.

Raven Squad just tried it...It wasn't pretty.
Wasn't pretty? That is how you describe it? Man the game was all around horrible. Which is unfortunate since if they had put a little effort into it. Maybe hired some developers that understand basic coding to give the AI half a brain cell it might have been ok. That is not even considering the piss poor graphics and voice acting that was even worse than 2 Worlds. Yes the voice acting was worse than 2 Worlds. I wouldn't have thought it was possible. I can not for the life of me think of 1 redeeming quality other than the idea was a good one.

I really, really, REALLY hate threads like this, because 20 of the replies could have been omitted with google.

Even though everything I was gonna say has been said, it should be mentioned...

Battlezone/Battlezone 2: There was a separate view that you could use, called satellite uplink I think (though I know it was in Mechwarrior, maybe it was in both...) after you created a communications relay.

In BZ, you could get out of your vehicle and get in other vehicles, but that was pretty much the only reason to be an infantry-man. To steal other vehicles by sniping enemy pilots in their cockpits.

In BZ2, you were able to get out of your vehicle and go inside buildings as well as use your jetpack, or get different weapon loadouts from your armory (there was one with a bazooka and some other stuff) but the MAIN thing I meant to say was that you could go inside your communications bunker and that was where your RTS view came from - using the computer in there. You can give orders, leave, get in a tank, and join the assault yourself!

In Savage 2, (probably savage 1 too but I never played it...) one of the players DOES play as a commander, having very little abilities to assist the battle. He has is non-combat and combat buffs, like heals or armor buffs, or making one person do more damage for a few seconds. Other than that, he separates players into groups and squads, provides them orders that they don't usually listen to, he can build buildings on his own but players who picked a worker class (think battlefield or TF2 on respawn) can help construct it faster or create buildings themselves if their commander is incompetent.

In games like Mechwarrior, you have a top-down view that you don't use much, and can give basic orders to people, but it's nothing on the scale that you guys want or are talking about.

I hope this post sort of enlightens someone, I guess.
