A side character who was better than the hero

Well final fantasy X and XII spring to mind, swopped them out as fast as i could and i was so happy with the ending of X.

Otherwise, as a whole i find main characters kinda annoying these days, if they have a large group of friends or backup or the like, then there will usually be someone more likeable, though this is mainly from shooters and rpgs.

Well, one of Yahtzee's quotes was something along the lines of, "Batman is always the least interesting character in whatever he's in" and that's so true. I mean, compare Batman to Mr. Freeze, the Joker, or Catwoman.

Of course, Batman is still a pretty cool character himself, so it works.

Ben Finn from Fable III. I'm glad they wised up and made a book concerning his adventures. He was the only awesome character in that game (except for Sabin).

What was the point of him being there? I mean seriously, even the other main characters would either ignore him or tell him to stop interrupting. No one knew.

i never read the books, but judging from the Lord of the Rings movies, Sam was a much better hero than Frodo.

Frodo was whiny, helpless, and easily corrupted. Sam saved his ass on numerous occasions and if he wasnt there, Frodo wouldve fucked up entirely.

I actually felt more attatched to his brother Reks...until he was killed in the first 20 minutes of gameplay.

From Kingkillers Chronicles Bast does amazing feat of being almost more awesome than Kvothe. Too bad he isn't in the book more often. While he is cool with being something like deamon and stuff, what makes him such an awesome character is his devotion to his master Kvothe. While Bast is several hundred years old and Kvothe just somewhat over 20, he treats him with utmost respect and he would gave his life if he could to save his teacher from melancholy that is devouring him.

Im not sure if Will form His Dark Materials is a side character but he is the most badass boy character I have met in any story so far and so he is much better than Lyra IMO.

Everyone from Mass Effect 2. Particularly Garrus, Thane, Mordin, Tali and Joker. Since Shepard is a drawing board for anyone to use (or you can go with the "classic" Shepard) and I'm fairly uninteresting, the characters following you are that much more awesome.

Since I'm watching it right now: In Twilight, Jasper is easily so much better as a character than Edward.
