A side character who was better than the hero

Johnny Gat in saints row he is just badass
What I love is canonically he's as ridiculously tough and dangerous as the boss, when you rescue him he'd killed 300 police officers, he takes a katana to the side and it only slows him down and at the end you see him alone taking on an army of cops like it's no big deal.

Most Final Fantasy Games, and Hughes from FMA.

Not a complete thought, but I'm too lazy to type sentences tonight.

B. Carmine from Gears of War 2.
He's the only character I could identify with; he was anxious in combat, showed more emotion than gritty determinedness, and wore a freakin' helmet!

Here's something I noticed.

Quite often, there is a supporting character (Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean, Lestat from Interview with the Vampire) who is infinitely better/more popular/more entertaining than the protagonist (Will Turner, Louis).

The creators realize that their popular supporting character is basically what made the movie/book/game. Sometimes they themselves fall in love with that character (Anne Rice). Then they make all future sequels feature that character as a protagonist.

It invariably turns out terrible. It becomes all about this wacky-awesome character getting up to their wacky-awesome hijinks, and you just get sick of them really quickly.

Better to use them in small doses and leave the audience wanting more than to give them so much that they become fed up.
I heard this exact explanation as to why Pirates of the Caribbean IV sucks...

I'd like to direct your attention to FFXII. Unless you count someone else as the hero anyway. Which you should.
This was the first place I went!

The Arbiter from Halo 2/3. That guy was so cool, and he had a personality. When Master Chief was all "Grr. I kill things now," Arby was making fun of prophets as he killed them. It's too bad he got shunted to the side in Halo 3.
This is pretty much what I was going to say, if they don't bring him back for Halo 4 I will be very disappointed

Well, in Bleach, Kenpachi was 100 times cooler than Ichigo. Would be a much better manga with him as the main character.

I agree with this statement. I was also hoping the last Carmine in Gear of War 3 was going to stand out like Ben with things like anxiety of losing two brothers in the war, but aside from one piece of dialogue during gameplay he remained generic :(

The A.I. Durandal from Bungie's Marathon series. Also, if going by video-game universe only, then the entire Halo 3: ODST cast over Master Chief. Although, if going by the books, then he's still one of my favorite characters. Although the A.I.s from Contact Harvest were also pretty cool.

Anyone other than Scott Pilgrim in either the movie or comic of the same name. That story practically survives on the support characters.

Dominic Santiago from Gears of War. If you compare him to Marcus Fenix, there is no contest. Fenix has the personality of a rock, and minuscule amounts of character development. All that we knew about marcus from Gears 1 to Gears 3 was: Marcus was put in jail because he abandoned his post during the pendulum wars so as to defend his father from the locusts on E-day. other then that pretty much nothing other than the fact that he's in a relationship with Anya. As for Dominic, You have a much better character Arch. Dom begins the story as a strong man even in the face of danger who saves marcus from prison. little is known about him other then the fact that he's "looking for someone" but he still keeps focused on the mission. in Gears 2 he slips into a deeper state of insanity in the senesce that he's become obsessed with finding his wife. He Becomes more frustrated easier and has a tendency to go berserk on a crowd of locusts. finally after killing his own wife who was tortured and by the looks of things, lobotomized by the locust. He is a shell of his former self by the beginning of gears 3 and he pretty much is dead weight. finally he gives his life to save Marcus, the only person he cared about who managed to stay alive. It's pretty clear who the more advancing character is.

Garrus from Mass Effect is about a billion times more interesting than Shepard and needs to be the star of his own game. For that matter Mordin was pretty awesome as well. Now that would be an interesting game - it'd make a great deal more sense to do side quests everywhere if your character was a doctor...

Wait, if his character was THE Doctor!

Well, in my opinion, side characters usually will end up being more interesting because they don't have story restrictions and therefore are capable of doing anything within reason.

OT: Sgt. Johnson always stood out most to me. More then any other character in the series.
