A small birthday rant

Actually no, this isn't really a rant, and I am not seeking attention because I'm depressed or anything.

Well although today is my birthday I didn't look forward to it at all. It has been like this for years now but I am still not sure how.

I was never one of those people who looked forward to their birthdays because they were going to have or receive something fun and thoughtful. Instead I am one of those cynical types who simply think of it as any other day and if something good does occur, well at least it will be mildly pleasant instead of a disappointment.

To put it simply, the more cynical I am of my birthday, the less disappointed I will feel.

So, did anyone else feel this way on their last birthday? Is anyone feeling this way about their upcoming birthday?

P.S. Since it's inevitable that people will tell me happy birthday anyway thank you all :].

Happy birthday!

And no I don't feel cynical. Half the time I wake up and wonder why there's a few boxes and envelopes downstairs.

I have to wait around for someone to remind me it's actually my birthday.

I have a bad memory for things like this.

My birthday was two days ago, so yay for August birthdays.

I view it as annoying. Give me the food and the presents, and I don't want to hear about how different I am or want to do anything else.

For what it's worth, Happy Birthday.

I'm not so much cynical as I am worried. I am 28 now and in a year and a half I will be 30. Pretty soon I am going to have to face the fact I am gonna have to start acting my age...

They mean less the more of them you have - seriously, I stopped caring about them at 25. This isn't a world-weary, cynical take on birthdays either, it's just simply the more of them you've had the less you care about them. My next birthday I'm gonna be 30, and do you know what I'm going to be doing? Going to work, same as ever, and then having one or two pints on the way home with a few friends. Don't worry about not feeling psyched on your birthday, it happens to us all sooner or later.

Oh, happy birthday by the way.

Yay, my birthday is today too!

And by far it hasn't felt much like what it used to. My guess is that because I want less and less things over the course of aging there's nothing to anticipate. But today I certainly didn't wake up thinking "Today's mah birfday, I'm da king of dis werld mutafukoos!!" For me it's just another day with something a little extra.

But as soon as I start to think that I'm 18 today, my brain just snaps. I'm an adult now, and have done absolutely bloody nothing to make use of it

my birthday before last included me getting a copy of Lost Magazine, and MAD magazine thrown at me without anyone bothering to turn off the TV or even look at me.

Yeah, that was pretty shitty, I don't read either of those magazines.

Eh. I'm still kind of childish in that I get excited like I was six, but in a deeper voice >.>

It's a way of thinking I'm trying to change. I haven't hit a birthday since I finished therapy for depression, though, so I don't really know how that's going to go.

My birthdays generally turn out well, though. Why not have an extra day to enjoy yourself?

My dad hasn't started and I'm pretty sure he's reaching 40. And my grandma acts like a five year old. Feel free to act like a child, it's fun.

Cynical? No. Living-in-dread-of, yes. Just about every year on my birthday, something awful happens to me. Dog attacks, friends dying, bouts of horrific intestinal flu, foot surgery, terrorists running planes into the World Trade Center (okay, that happened two days before, but nobody was in a mood to celebrate anything as a result), planning to go out for dinner to my favorite restaurant and having it burned down by a disgruntled ex-employee the day before, that sort of thing. Last year I spent 18 hours at my job on my birthday...on a Sunday, no less...because it was go-live day for the ERP system upgrade project I was project manager for. So I always approach that particular day with a bit of dread.

Anyway, here's hoping yours works out better.

Have a flat, uneventful birthday!

Mine often are, although I usually get a small wad of money chucked at me. Worth looking forward to a few days in advance.

Since we're all nerds here, I will quote the hit TV show Big Bang Theory on how I feel about Birthdays...

Leonard: [why he doesn't celebrate his birthday] It's no big deal. It's just the way I was raised. My parents focused on celebrating achievements, and being expelled from a birth canal was not considered one of them.

I rather celebrate over achievements and trophies (yes, i did just make a wordplay referencing xbox and PS) rather than milestones that happen on a regular basis.

I never get excited about my birthday, I've learnt nothing is going to change about how my birthday isn't celebrated. My parents don't seem to care, I did get visited by one of my friends which was nice but thats about it.
Even turning 18 wasn't as good as some people hype it up to be, 15 days and I've been out drinking twice.

I oddly feel exactly the same way...
I believe one of my favorite comedians, Patton Oswalt, explained birthdays perfectly.
