A "suicide" button in FPS multiplayers

I'm (kinda) serious.

My thought was a 'suicide' button in FPS games in situations where you know you are going to die but don't want to give the other team a kill!

Yeah it's a cowards way out. But if you are stuck in a building with no way out and enemies closing on you from all sides, then I think it's an idea.

I know it would probably never work as it would create immense amount of controversy but I would like to know thoughts on the idea in general.

One has had the chance to commit suicide in a (multiplayer) FPS for over a decade.

Like in Counter-Strike:
1. type 'kill' in console
2. there is no step two

Though the logic to kill yourself in a FPS because you think you can't win, or to deny kills from another player; is the one of a complete asshole. I'm sure there's a more fitting name, but the equivalent would be to play an online game of RTS against another player, and as soon as one thinks he won't necessarily win: to disconnect.

what if an FPS had a weapon that was a suicide bomb?
you die and give off a boom equal to 2 grenades?

but if there is a suicide button make it so you die in an awesome way.

Battlefield 2 has one, but you only used it is cases like when u fell out of a plane and got stuck away from everything cause the maps were HUGE and it woulda taken like 30mins to walk to the nearest vehicle.

Nah. Only really fun on old style split screen multiplayer where your friends can thump you in person and laugh about it. It just kind of defeats the purpose of a competitive game... the game is you shoot at each other until someone dies. Topping yourself to deny the other guys point is just cheating really.

... Although the tactical suicide plan is hilarious

And yes, I'm waiting for someone to dig out the Life of Brian suicide squad clip, which I'm too lazy to find myself.

You want to add cheap tricks to games?
Can you see any possible way this would go well?

Well I would add it to games just for shits and giggles, but at the end of the match take 5 kills off your score for every suicide.

When stuff you do over a prolonged interval of time actually matters in the long run over one playing session, then you need that button. It's just not much games require that much attention these days.

I remember doing suicide in BF2, where sometimes you just go too far off. We also used to play a lot of Quake 2/3 at school and would play out a suicide "joke" just before the other player takes the shot. It all counts as a loss, so can't quite exploit it.

As for controversy... what?

Toss a grenade into a corner and follow it in, that usually does the trick.

But no, I think it would just turn into more griefing. I wouldn't play a game very long if every time I got into a firefight with someone they just hit the hari-kiri button when they were about to lose.

That is a fucking stupid sorry, I play with my brother a lot and he is the kind of guy that says camping is perfectly acceptable and he constantly commits suicide when I am going to kill meaning I don't get a point for it and in most games it has the same penalty of dying meaning I always end up loosing by one or two points which I would have if I got to kill him. now don't get me wrong I don't mind loosing at a game I just want to have fun but I get get really angry when I am cheated out of victory and I don't have fun when I get angry pulse some of the best fights I had in games were when i am deep in enemy lines low on health and out numbered 10 to 1 (mostly resulting in me kicking ass and winning or nearly winning). and i had great experiences when that happens to my enemy from he fight he puts up but he only put up that fight because he had to those things won't happen as much with a suicide button, also i care a lot about fighting honourably and honestly so killing yourself out of spied doesn't work into those two things.

Quite a few games have this, mostly ones from Battlefield/Battlefront. Instead of giving the other team a kill, you give your team -1 points and respawn.

I know that in css if you write in the console "kill" or something like that, you'll die.

As long as it gave a 5 second long animation of you placing the pistol in your mouth that could be interupted by the other team killing you then i would be fine with it

Theres one in BC2 but i dont anyone uses it, i dont even know why its there.

I think its a stupid idea, there would be alot of ragers if it were in COD

There are lots of games with suicide buttons. I, in fact, bound it to "k" in CS:S and ended up accidentally killing myself. I think that button should only be used in situations where you're stuck in the level geometry or something... not to keep someone else from killing you.

Oh yeah, and Metal Gear Solid 3 had one.
