The 24th of August is the 3rd anniversary of Sophie Lancasters death. Please take even a moment to remember her on the day and consider your view of others. We are all different - we need to learn to love that which we do not understand, hate will only destroy beauty we have yet to appreciate.

You know, my first thought was that this thread is a failure because the two people who have posted so far and I didn't know who she was, but since at least two of us wiki'd her it actually increased Sophie Lancaster awareness.

Was she killed because she was bisexual or homosexual in a conservative town? I have obligation to feel anything for a person I haven't heard of.

Just a suggestion: If you are going to post something like this, it helps if you add some background information on the situation for anyone not familiar with it, or at the very least a link. At this point, I have no idea who you are referring to, and therefore it is very hard for me to be interested. I will look it up on my own, but it helps if you post all the information in the future.

I'll do the same. Two birds, one stone. I know I've heard that name somewhere......just...can't....remember...

When people die, it's always sad and I will leave the close relatives to their mourning.

In this particular case, it's obvious that no matter how long the killers get it will never be long enough, and it'll go down in history as just another person dead due to some binge-drunken youths.

Unfortunately.

Humanity sickens me at times like that. It's easy to say that those who did this were inhuman, that they were special for some reason. No. Humanity can become this because that person is inside almost all of us, to use a dodgy metaphor, but you get the point. Almost anyone can become that.

Me three.

Seems like she and her boyfriend were murdered because of the way they dressed. That's really tragic that people judged her because of the color of clothing she wore. I'm really sorry for the victims and their families.

I have to agree. I did look her up, and it's certainly a tragic story that bears remembering. Kudos if you are attempting to bring something like this to the publics attention, but bear in mind this is a site visited by people from all over the world. I, for instance, am from Canada and had never heard of her before.

Either way though, as I said, an unfortunate story that should be remembered.

Thanks buddy, now i'm only more pissed off. And I won't remember her death or this date because she was no more important to me than the other millions of people who died.

This is going to sound callous and mean, but i really couldn't care less about the deaths of two goths in england. Yes, it's sad that they died (and fucking stupid) because of the way they dressed, yes, this probrably caused much grief to the family. But ask yourself, what does that mean to YOU? Why should it matter to ME? It doesn't. They weren't the victims of mass genocide, they didn't have any terminal preventable diseases, it was merely a random act of evil, the kind that happen every day.

You want to know what's really sad? I'll tell you, 200,000 people died in darfur and nearly 4 million are still in desperate need of aid and assistance. THAT is truly sad. 200,000 dead is a blemish upon the world, and a dirty mirror reflecting our own hideousness back at us. 2 dead goths? Merely a tale of some ridiculous manchild hating what he does not understand. This is something that while somewhat tragic, is small in comparison to the grand scheme of things, if you're not a friend or direct family member, why concern yourself with this, when there are things out there that are far MORE tragic, and have a geniune impact on the world scene? Crisis in sudan? AIDS? These are what you should be concerned about, and raising awareness for.

I just looked her up. Now that I've read it, I remember hearing about it at the time, but as I'm from the USA, and there wasn't a lot of coverage of it over here, it dropped out of my consciousness. It is a bit scary, especially since my 12 year old sister is starting to take an interest in the goth culture, but I'm overprotective of her anyways. I feel it is a shame they weren't able to track down more people involved, and didn't fully charge everyone they did track down, but I'm sure they did all they could.

Yeah I'm annoyed. Shall we include her in rememberance day too?

And also, people are rememboring her in the wrong way. The chavs were beating up her boyfriend for the wah HE looked, and she stepped in trying to save him. Shut up about it being so tragic and prejudice, if we're going to harp on about it, harp on about her dying a hero, and trying to save the one she loved.

God. No one is trying to claim that this is "sadder" than the deaths in Darfur. Or more of a tragedy than AIDS. This opinion annoys the shit out of me. It's not a fucking contest mate.

What the hell is wrong with a group of people getting together to raise awareness and to preach acceptance? What the fuck is wrong with people raising money for a cause that aims to prevent young teenagers from doing these kind of acts? Should they be forced to donate all the money they have raised to AIDS instead? Or how about the Sudanese?

No they shouldn't. Because this matters to them.

Get over yourself.

Not to be a dick, but people die all the time... Although this is a particularly nasty way to go.

Why do people always like to post this kind of thread a week/month before the anniversary of whatever terrible event happened to occur? Can't we post it, say, a day before at the earliest? Suppose that would make a bit too much sense.

Either way, it's a horrible way to go and the reason for the assault were particularly idiotic, once again dropping my faith in humanity another notch or so.
