So Escapists, I've recently had a lot of life altering news (not dying, just things not working out the way they should be) and I've gone for a complete re-invent of myself.

I recently failed my army application due to apparent asthma (which I've never had. Grrr.) and have decided my skills lie a little better in the Paramedics or Fire service for now. I've even gone to chase the old schoolboy hobby of being a mechanic.

So, anyone ever had this kind of thing? Discuss, share experiences etc :)

Also it's my 1000th post, so I thought I'd make at least a semi interesting topic to keep you escapists busy! :)

I wanted to be a spaceman, but then I calculated the odds of meeting aliens and realized it wouldn't be worth it.

Well, I've thought about being an engineer ever since I was about ten. Making things work, and improving on them, always appealed to me.
And then I got into my first real Engineering class. I hated it.
So I moved on to try Computer Science.
It seems to be going pretty well for me so far.

And congrats!

Computer Science is really fun.
I find it to be a fantastic major.

I once wanted to be an astronaut when I was (much) younger, before I realised that shooting out into space would be scary as fuck. I guess that's what you were asking for.

Sort of :p Neonbob pretty much hit the nail on the dead. Sort of, doing something, then realising it wasn't going to happen and gone in a totally different direction.

A while ago, I just wanted to be a National Park Ranger, but I realized that I like my computer too much...and video games...and all other technology...and a high paying job. So I now believe I want to go into game design, but I am ready to accept the "You fail at life! Pick another job!" thing.

Throughout most of high school, I thought I wanted to be a teacher. The idea of shaping young minds and being a positive influence on youngsters really appealed to me. Then I tried being a teacher's aide in a summer Graphic Design class for middle-schoolers and I realized something: Youngsters are total wads.

I've since focused on my first interest, animation.

Whoa... almost the exact same story here.

Except it took a bit too long for me to realise I hated it, so by that point it was too late to switch to the ICT course.

I hate Engineering class.

Ahh, I did that for my work experience :p Except I did mine in a Nursery, and goddammit they make secondary kids look pleasant.
There is no such thing as sharing ¬_¬

Really?
That's...pretty cool, actually.
What put you off of it?
It was the horrible teaching that did it for me...the only thing we ever talked about was how "teamwork will be the most important thing you can ever master."
And I tuned out quickly after.

I've always wanted to be a zookeeper, and I still do, but lately I've been thinking of joining the Navy after college and becoming a Corpsman or a nurse. It would be a good way to pay back student loans and I would get medical training to use as a back-up career since there's currently a nurse shortage.

The clueness...ness of the teacher, the work we were doing, (bottle opener... Wha?), the idiots I have to work with, the crappy grades I'm getting because of teeny-tiny scratches on the work and the fact that I realised I would never want to do any kind of 'hands on' jobs in the future. Oh, and the 4 hour sessions.

Congrats on 1000 posts! I'm almost there...well, not really.

I'm kinda stressed lately, to be honest. The driving examiners in my area are all on strike, so I can't get my beginners license while all my friends have their advanced ones.

Also, I can't seem to get a part time job, even though I applied to a bunch of place and even got an interview (which I guess I failed). Again, all my friends have jobs and money, and they're able to buy a bunch of stuff. Not me.

It's also my last year of high school, and marks are important. I'm trying my best, but I'm not quite satisfied with my marks. There's really not much more you can do than your best.

Plus I'm feeling distant from a few of my friends lately.

Hasn't been the best few weeks, and I want to "re-invent" myself by fixing these things, but I can't seem to right now.

Sorry for the emo rant, lol.
Don't worry about it, we all have them. It's best to do what you feel is right and grab the bull by the horns so to speak. Didn't get that interview? Call them and find out why, maybe you need to update something small that you may not have noticed.

Well, as for the Driving examiners, that's unfortunately out of your power :/ But I feel your pain, because over here in the UK atm, the postal workers are on strike. >_<

Woah...That is horrible.
No wonder you hated it.
Hell, we got to make marshmallow catapults, and that was the sole redeeming thing in the class...
And how the hell did they justify four hour sessions?!

Same dream here. A few years ago, I wanted to become an aeronautical engineer. Now, I want to go into game design or computer sciences.

I haven't had any really life changing experiences, though. Every once in a while, I look at myself and see what I can do better. I've made small improvement.

When I was five, my teacher told the class to draw what we wanted to be when we grew up. Teacher: Now children; you can be whatever you want when you grow up.
Children around me drew such wholesome things as bakers, firemen and astronauts. When the teacher came to me she saw my doodle of a giant robot destroying a city.
Me: I wanna crush the organics!
Teacher: You will never be a giant robot.
Me: But you said...
That moment changed my life forever.
