Games Workshop are HIGHLY protective over their stuff. You would find this being pulled just for the idea of Dark Eldar and Eldar allying.

Im not saying its a bad idea. Just saying thats what they would do lol.

The one they are making now i hear will be based on career tree choices. What I mean by that is similar to this.

Imperial Guardsman (20) - Space Marine Scout (30) - Space Marine (40) - SM Librarian/Commander
- Karsikan (30) - Commissar (40) - Inquisitor

I know its a crappy rough table but thats the kind im hearing.

Sorry, I really am, as this sounds very interesting, but why are Eldar and Dark Eldar neutral to each other?
I guess I should actually read stuff about them...

Edit: Now that I've read all of it, I think it sounds like it'd be quite fun, especially if it updates alongside the tabletop version.
Actually DEldar and Eldar have joined up to fight common enemies before, its just quite a rare occasion.
The real question is why the hell would Necrons and 'Nids be neutral other than the fact they have the same goals, to eat everything in the universe.

As far as im aware the Eldar have NEVER Allied with Dark Eldar because of the whole fall from grace etc. Only sect they may ally with is the Eldar Harlequins.

Well havin played a 2,5k point zombie robot army, I'd say the crons would be kinda hard to balance and be more about chance, primarily your luck with WWB(We'll Be Back)

A wise man once said: as necron you can loose during the pre-game handshake.

I hate it when games based on the GW universe come out. I always expect them to be embarassingly bad. DoW was a lovely surprise and DoWII was at least passable but the rest have been rather poor IMO. It's just difficult to make a game from something that is based on large scale warfare for the most part. The P&P RPG's have made an effort, but generally the civilian background hasn't been created in enough detail to make a decent RPG. I suppose MMO's are a bit different to standard RPG's, but it can't all be about fight, fight, fight.

I'd check it out. I'd actually like to pick up a copy of the 40k tabletop game to try with my regular group. I've always thought it was an interesting setting.

Personally I think thats why Warhammer Online failed because the battles didnt allow for any sort of fun outside of them.

Well, I never played WAR but I figured it would fail because it couldn't compete against WoW unless it brought WHFRP to the PC. That would have been awesome, I'm horribly stingy, but I would pay £15 a month for that without a second thought. But from what I could see it just tried to make a copy of WoW painted (very badly) to look like the Warhammer world (in some sort of cartoon dimension).

EDIT:
Now that I'v ethought some more, it seemed more like they tried to make Warhammer MMOFB (Fantasy Battle) rather than a Warhammer MMORPG.

Pft, 'nids would never let the Necrons live. They would be at war.
I think Penny Arcade basically pointed out that the races and their allies wouldn't work the same way as Warhammer Fantasy, but I would like to see them try it.

ONe thing that would make this totally awesome.

Instead of controlling a single character, you control a squad as your character!

IG's could start out as a conscript, move up to a shock trooper, then when they reach a certain level, they become a platoon command squad!

From here, they can specialise, turning their squad into a mechanized unit, or into an elite infantry unit.

Mechanized units can branch off into support(chimaeras, basilisks), or assault(Leman Russ ir Hellhound), and then as their final tier, choose a superheavy vehicle (Baneblades, Shadowswords...)

Elite Infantry can choose Stormtroopers(midrange fire support), melee(Ogryn), Sniper divisions, or command squads(casters).

At this point, I've knocked off the neutral category, just because neutrality in 40k would be pure hatred in our world. Anyway, that's one issue fixed.

WH40k MMO wouldn't work. I've run the numbers every which way, it just doesn't work. The problem is that you couldn't have Space Marine characrers (too ubur) and none of the other races would ally with each other.

Not too sure how Tyranid playing would work effectively, and chitinous aliens are basically my favourite thing. I do like the squad system though.

Still, I will accept Chaos if that is all you can offer me.

Don't forget about the universe:
Immediately after the tutorial, you get outside and get nuked, devoured, melted, set on fire, exploded, electricuted, and a host of other horrifying and gruesome deaths.

It sounds good, however Eldar would ally with a race to further their own ends - In a campaign I am doing, they are allied with Tyranids

But yeah, I'd buy it

I see squads of followers as the only way to balance a 40k mmo. I thought a bit about this a few years back when the MMO was first announced I broke it down something like this:

Space marine: Start as scout, specialization into a skill tree of choice at arbitrary lv.
Imperial guard: start off as standard grunt but become a sergeant with a squad of followers.
Chaos: Start as marine aspirant, similar to space marines
Tau: start fire warriror, eventually move your way towards either squad leader or battlesuit
Orks: Choice of branches between horde or bigger tougher ork nob.
Eldar: choice of aspect after starting guardian, few followers
Dark eldar: similar to eldar
Tyranid: start as a gaunt, throw yourself into a digesting pool and return as more advanced form
Necron: These are hard to do, never really worked out a way to balance them

Just a few basic ideas, mostly similar to OP but with a choice of path once you hit the arbitrary lv 10.

Edit: oh yeah, and any kind of Alliance system would be hard to do, since so many of the different factions are genocidal isolationists. Or in the case of the Necron and Tyranid: Omnicidal.

Who would be an Imperial Guardsman if you could be a space marine?

I'd be the guard, because I like the idea of a working-class soldier.
