Is there such a thing?

Since I was old enough to be self aware, I've been drawn to the "military arts", as it were, I've studied the "Old Roman", Byzantine, and Persian Empires (among others) since I was ten, I can use any number of firearms, I am well trained in various forms of hand to hand combat and martial arts; my time in the U.S. Army has led me to be able to say "I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you" and mean it, I can use a sword or spear as easily as most people use a broom, and I can literally kill a man in under five seconds with my bare hands and I know for a fact that the "nose into the brain" move is just a myth.

It's been a joke among my friends since adolescence; "Dude, you were born 600 years too late.", and I make no bones about the fact that I feel more comfortable with a sword and a dagger strapped to my hip than my DEagle .50.

With all the talk of the end of the world lately, 12-21-2012, the Lost Book of Nostradamus, et. al. has got me thinking a lot lately that there might something to it and I find myself alternately thrilled and scared shxtless at the prospect of standing in the end times, knowing my day has finally come.

Thoughts on the matter? Impressions? Does anyone else among us Escapists feel the same? How many of you think I'm just plain nutterbutter? Anybody want lessons? *Ironic wink*

I believe that "the soul of a warrior" is just a regular old soul that just happens to belong to a warrior.

I'm not sure what you're getting at here.

It has less to do with your soul and more to do with talent. You were born with a natural talent for physical combat and your interest in medieval and hand-to-hand combat only furthered your drive to hone your talents. I say, good for you. Every deserves to have something that their good at, and if your's is beating people up, Caesar-style, then all the power to you (not that you need it).

As for the end of the world, you'd be well prepared to beat off the legions of shut-in losers saying "I told you so". Not really, obviously, because The End is a myth.

I think there is such a thing as "The soul of a warrior" because I have one. Fighting, strategy, and the like have always come naturally to me. History pertaining to battles and empires I've always found facsinating, escpecially when it comes to tactics. I guess I'm in the same boat as KungFuMaster.

An interesting read...thanks for the info.
As far as my faith goes though, "you still do not know the day, nor the hour"...

Just remember:

General Patton believed he served in the Napoleanic Wars as well. He used this belief with the lessons of history to plan military strategy.

Feels good to know I'm not the only one.

When the Alien Space Bats finally come for us, head to what is left of Maple Grove, MN; my fortifications are already going up under the guise of my wife thinking I want to live in the country, I.E. House on a hill, surrounded on all sides by water, etc, etc.

heh, that reminds me of Marv from Sin City

Most people think Marv is crazy. He just had the rotten luck of being born in the wrong century. He'd be right at home on some ancient battlefield swinging an axe into somebody's face. Or in a Roman arena, taking his sword to other gladiators like him. They woulda tossed him girls like Nancy back then.

Didn't want to go there myself, but, in a nutshell, yeah...I guess it doesn't help that I'm about to walk out the door to go th' bar...see you tomorrow, Escapist...hope I don't get slammed too hard.

I understand your feelings OP.
I too have long felt the draw of the Military and the Martial ways.
Unfortunately i was denied joining the Army back when i left school as i had been diagnosed with Asthma. I have NEVER had an attack, but the Army saw fit to exclude me because of it.
This was 13 Years ago, back before they had to be Politically Correct.
My mind still brims with Military tactics and my body still remembers the Martial way as part of my muscle memory. Having had a depressive breakdown 6 years ago i am not the physical specimen i once was. However looking at the world around me i feel the grim reality that very soon we will be drawn back into conflict. I am working on my resilience and fitness preparations, in a readiness to restart my training reigeme.
While unconvinced of an End of Times event, i am sure there will be a reckoning very soon.

To OP: Have you ever been hipnotised and regressed to childhood ? I haven't but have longed to. As i would like a past life experience.
Sometimes i have memories that are not my own. Like a rudimentary understanding of German and French, as well as Latin. Not one lesson. The first time i got on a horse i instinctively knew what i was doing. The trainer asked me if had riden before, which i had not.
I have long thought of my "past" lifes and feel certain i was a German Luftwafer Pilot, a Roman Gladiator, An English Bowman, a Japanese Samurai and a Mongol Horse Archer.

I remember a dream i had about a sword. A fortnight later i went to the May fest and picked up a sword for the very first time. It felt EXACTLY like the sword i had handled in my dream, 2 weeks prior.

So yeah, i like to think i have a warriors soul as well.

I would, but then if I went back in time, I would not be able to have A/C or TV. My head is always filled with tactics. I used to draw Xs and Os on a piece of paper and fight both of them out through landscapes. Kind of weird, I know, but it is true. I managed to pull myself over it and get on with my life. I would still go back if I had the chance.

Warriors soul is sated in many ways; have you thought of getting drunk off your ass and beating people off.
No. The only person I "beat off" is me.

I know what you meant, and therein lies the rub; I have a problem with picking fights, unless it's for a good reason, as in the time a guy at the Third Rock thought it would a good idea to grab my wife and kiss her on the mouth because he was drunk and horny (I was off having a pee); I put that guy in the hospital.

But as for random acts of ass-kickery? Not so much.

Okay, now I'm leaving to the bar for real.

to the OP, aside from I have never been in the military (I have a mild case of CP, or cerebral palsy, so I doubt they would ever take me) I know exactly how you feel. My friend has a real sword, and when I pick it up it just feels oh so right. Something about it just feels natural. I often wonder and wish that I could have lived as a knight. Conversely I know exactly how Marv from Sin City feels.
No, but after this life, maybe we will all meet in Valhalla, where you feast and fight, fight and feast, all day. Mostly preparing for Ragnarok.

Heh. "We drink and fight and drink and fight and drink and fight some more..."

If you're the type, torrent the CD Mudmen by the group Mudmen, there's three songs on that disc I always listen to before I head out to the bar, and "Drink & Fight" is one of them.

Available on Amazon, otherwise.

Also, I knew my broadsword was for me the second I held it in my hand; it was the best six hund-y I ever spent...high carbon steel, hand forged and laser sharpened, aesthetically it's rather plain, but functionally, it is a thing of beauty indeed.

If I have the ambition tomorrow (syntax: "If I sleep off the hangover soon enough to remember") I'll post a picture.
