Who said PC games aren't profitable? This article would beg the differ.

Btw. "Terraria" sold almost 500.000 copies on Steam (also without any advertisement and mainly word-of-mouth) before the Steam Summer Sale even started :p

It's still been near/at the Top Spot for the last few days even though there's other games released and daily deals etc. I'm guessing in about a month's time we'll get the news that it sold 1 million xD
Speaking of which, the day Cthulhu Saves the World was released, the top three selling games on Steam were all indie games. In order, they were:

1. Cthulhu Saves the World
2. Dungeons of Dredmor
3. Terraria

Kind of wish I hadn't been too lazy to get a screenshot. It was pretty impressive to see the stuff lower down in the list that they were beating in sales.

There's also the fact that I suspect that XBLIG has got what I'll call "App Store syndrome": anything priced higher than $1 doesn't sell. Breath of Death ($1) outsold Cthulhu Saves the World ($3) nearly three times over, for example. Compare and contrast with Steam, in which $60 games share equal footing with $3 games, and people see said $3 game and declare "bargain!".

That said, pricing low doesn't always work on Steam (see: Eternity's Child).

I don't understand why people still put indie titles on XBL. Its been public knowledge that they're shit with indie games for quite a while now.

I would wager its because the XNA SDK is cheap and easy.

Also.. is it just me or does the math in the OP not quite add up. 17000 copies of the game on steam at 3$ a pop (which its been discounted since it was released) is 51000$, not 100,000. Granted its still more than the 50,000 @ 1$, but its still not 100,000.

Also, Im glad to see this. The games are well worth the price. I know I funded the game back in january to the point of entitling for a free copy. And I still bought the steam incarnation. Hope it helps because I would really like to see more from Zeboyd.

The $100k is both titles added together.

How did you not notice this?

Also this. 3 bloody fabulous games that I've put more time into lately than any AAA title this year. Didn't even cost me $20 all together despite buying them all full price.

Actually, there are a bunch of good indie games on the XBLA marketplace and most of them are really cheap. (Cthulhu Saves the World is a good example of this. I stumbled across it about six months ago and it's a great little game.) Unfortunately, Microsoft gives its indie games section no love, so most gamers don't even know it exists. And indie games cannot give Achievements, so that's a turn off for a large portion of Xbox Live subscribers. Finally, how much space do IGN, GameSpot, Giant Bomb or The Escapist give to XBLA indie games? I can't remember seeing a whole lot of reviews or even previews of these titles.

Zeboyd revealed in a transcript of an Ars Technica interview that lifetime XBLIG sales of Breath of Death VII, released on April 22, 2010, are about 50,000 copies at $1 each, while Cthulhu Saves the World, which came out on December 30, 2010, has put out between 16,000 and 17,000 copies at $3 each. In other words, Zeboyd's games have cranked out at least $100,000 in sales less than seven days after arriving on Steam.
Thats why it doesnt make sense. The wording makes it sounds as if the game has made 100,000$ in sales in less than seven days, Not over the course of the lifetime of both games.

None the less, its a great accomplishment, and here is to hoping to see even bigger and better things from Zeboyd in the future.

I think this is actually a proof of a split in the type of people that are playing PC and playing on the 360 and PS3 but this split isn't the consumer's fault.

On the PC there is a wide variety of styles at play and can be accessed freely. On the 360 they have to get permission and this limits the amount of games there.

OK before everyone slaughter's me just for this statement stop a second.

You walk into a GameStation, CeX or GameStop and you look at the shelves for 360, although there's a wide range its still restrictive to a quality level decided by Microsoft (love to know what that is considering...). An assumption is made is that these are the games best for this console so when indies come in they are pushed to the sidelines or forced to cut prices for the game.

Now look at the PC market. You look for your own definition of quality and what you and your friends enjoy and you are not restricted by a corporations opinion and more importantly know that the money is going into the hand of developers so are willing to pay a higher price. Also consider this, PC players have access to the internet and can get a wide variety of reviews and then quickly buy download titles whereas Xbox players do not have an unbiased view at hand.

Its saying that it sold around $100k worth over the lifetime on XBox, and done that as well in a week on steam.
