See the link for details, but basically, a pro-life group in America are up in arms over the fact that Krispy Kreme have used the wording of "free doughnut of choice" for a free doughnut promotion they are running on Obama's inauguration as it's apparently promoting his pro-choice stance on abortion.

I think, regardless of your stance on abortion, we can all agree this is a ridiculous claim. I don't actually think they're actually that stupid though. Anybody else think they're just trying to stir up controversy to get press exposure?

Or are they really that dumb?

The fundies are just annoyed that McCain didn't get in and are stirring up trouble for it. I don't think any amount of fundies could bring Krispy Kreme down though. No one can resist such sugary, glazed goodness! Krispy Kreme is doing what we call product promotion. Getting more people interested in their product by providing a free sample. Oh no, how terrible! I also love how the availability of an abortion seems to be synonymous with death for them. Also, pro-life is such a ridiculous term, because it implies that abortions are "pro-death". I don't think anybody ever wants to get an abortion, there are just cases when it's best for all concerned to get one; and just because somebody has the choice to abort a fetus that doesn't mean they will! The way they talk, they make it sound like we're all just really desperate to kill babies if we're pro-choice. They're not pro-life, they're anti-abortion!

The only time when the abortion issue ever really made me do a /facepalm is when the Planned Parenthood in the state I live in offered gift certificates during christmas. Technically it was a generic certificate, and could be used for any health related services, but to be honest I didn't even know offered services other than said abortion.

Of course, the PP in my state is already in trouble over a sting operation in which a women claiming to be 13 went in saying she got pregnant from a man in his 30's and the worker didn't want to know the mans age because the law requires police notificaiton of statutory rape.

Of course taking something as insignificant as donuts and associating them with something that no one want to go through is a clever thing. Not a tasteful thing at all, but still ingenious I suppose. It's the most achingly obvious attempt at publicity I've seen in a long time.

Seriously, this can take medicine to a whole new level, maybe find a treatment for my condition (which is why I am so big on a strong r&d development nation like the states to enter the field, sorry China, I know you love Canada but your medicine is not up to snuff), and the material people are freaking out about being used in this research is just being incinerated as it stands.

My sentiments exactly. It's a promotion based arount the inaugeration, it doesn't have any connections to "abortion" apart from the use of the word choice, which as the article states has become synonymous, in America, with abortion policy.

It's a promotion, how could you seriously think a donut company can inlfuence public opinion... Are they really that good? (I've never had a Krispy Kreme... so my response may be redundant).

Oh yeah, I agree with pro-choice and this is just a publicity stunt, they just don't want Obama in charge (idiots) so they're stirring up trouble for him. That said, I hope Obama does get rid of some of the more Conservative Christian influenced laws you Yanks suffer from (not being offensive, I'm Christian myself), since they have held too much sway in American politics for too long, you'll never move forward as a nation if you don't give things like stem cell research and the theory of evolution a chance...

Some people take things FAR too seriously, i'm pro life when it goes to abortion but this is just HILLAROUS.
