But I never said anything like this and these statements are complete strawmans, aggressive, and not very civil. I didn't even mention anything about how good Touhou is, I mentioned that I liked it. But I didn't say anything about the quality. I said that it was famous and that I was surprised that users here haven't heard of it.

I have visited dozens of communities, not anime related of course, and this is the first one I've visited where the majority of people hadn't heard of it. So this outrage and viciousness towards my surprise is completely unwarranted. And to be honest, wholly uncivil.

What i relate to Touhou and what Touhou is are very different. I know it is a long running doujin bullet hell game by Zun. What I seem to get from the fandom and tvtropes is that it spawns lot of memes and flanderizations.

Also the amount of fan art is staggering.

Even after seeing this, I STILL don't understand the plot or concept of Tohou other than the fact that it has like 15 main characters and 150 supporting characters who all just happen to be gods or demons in the form of little girls wearing odd yet fancy clothing. And that one of them has a frog hat, which improves my image of the series in my opinion, because now someone other than Graham has that hat.

Hate to break it to you but most people find anime dumb, if not childish, and judging from your blatant and pretentious reactions, I can assume you fall in this same category.

It's definitely an impressive piece of work, even though I honestly have no idea what Touhou is beyond the cracked article. Don't be so hard on us though, I won't try to revoke everybody's gamers license for not liking obscure things I love like heroes of might and magic, or Space Rangers or something.

No, what you did was call everyone trolls, claim people were living under rocks, and consolidated the entire Escapist community into a low opinion status. Then ranted on about how amazingly famous and popular this thing is, despite most people here having never seen it or heard of it.

Ergo, it's a subculture that is limited to certain Japanophile areas of the web, not universal. I'm sure if you referenced stuff like Studio Ghibli, then others would know, as Miyazaki's work is actually famous, not merely popular in areas.

I am rather surprised. Mostly by the fact it hasn't been done until now February.

I must admit though that I stayed in the Thread for the mess the OP started from the confusion and surprise (I assume, as sarcasm is hard to hear when listening to letters on a screen) at finding out the Forums aren't brimming with Touhou fans.
The site does have a Fan Group though, if you're looking for a place to talk about it, not sure about the activity you might find though.

On a final note, exactly how do you pronounce "Touhou"? I've been reading it "Toe Hoe" so far, but usually prefer to read things correctly.

It doesn't matter how big Touhou is in Japan, not many of us live in Japan.

Most of the views of those videos are from the West. As Japan mostly uses NicoNicoDouga for its Touhou fix.

I would if I could find them. You know, I haven't found too many people mention other sites around here. Even when I've stated I would like to have selection. In fact, I've never seen too much recommendation on the internet at all. All anyone every says is "why would you want to go anywhere else?".

I did hear about NeoGAF a while back on an article here. I tried signing up, but I don't think they're ever going to approve me. I do admit I like most topics there better, and wish I had the ability to post.

im 39 so i grew up watching japanese cartoons like robotech and starblazers on saturday mornings, most recent ones ive seen was akira when it was released on vhs for the cyberpunk elements and neon genesis evangelion.

the whole manga, anime, japanese obsession culture hit long after i was a teenager so i missed it and never had a reason to look into it

Oh really then? I'd definitely recommend watching some of their films. They really have a timeless quality and aren't as juvenile despite usually being centered around a young protagonist. Maybe Grave of the Fireflies or Only Yesterday would be a good place to start. Princess Mononoke is also very good.

How are we uncivil we stated that we didn't know what that place was and instead of doing the smart thing and giving us links or explaining, maybe making more fans for the series, you say things like:

Also, I see these people building things such as: a replica of Middle Earth, a castle the size of a city, and 128bit parallel processors; but where the hell do they get the time to make these things? Haven't they got to place them block-by-block ever in the flying, infinite supplies Minecraft creation mode?

Crazy dedication right there, whatever it is they've recreated.

There are bots out there that do the job for you.

And yeah you are overestimating the popularity of this, millions of views on youtube is nothing in this day and age. There are videos and channels out there that are way more well known and popular than some obscure part of Japanese culture.
And as for the most famous shooting game of all time, I hate to break it to you but call of duty like it or hate it has that crown as far as the west is concerned.
