AC2: A disappointment?

I really liked the first Assasin's Creed. I loved it do death actually. I've always had an interest in Israel and it was pleasant to be able to go around familiar cities, killing templars. Yes, it was flawed, as you all know by now, but I still loved it.

The thing I loved most though, and what I thought was next to perfect, was the tone of the story. You're a kidnapped civilian that is immediately thrown into experiments where an evil scientist explores the recorded memories of your ancestor, an assasin named Altair. Altair was a very downplayed character, if it was intentional or not I don't know, but he wasn't that humane, he didn't have much of a personality and he was kind of a huge asshole. But I liked that.

He was a ruthless assasin, only doing his job. He was a tool used by others who didn't think far ahead until it was too late. It made me feel like a real assasin.

And of course, from time to time you got back to reality, and slowly the questions about where you was got answered, but never completely. It felt scary, like a psychological thriller. I knew nothing, but the promise of a great reveal made everything extremely interesting, and the end for the future storyline left me very exited.

AC2 is a really good game, don't get me wrong. It has better game play, less repetitive missions, and it's a huge improvement over the first one... except the tone.

When I heard that Italy was the setting I was exited, even more so when I learned that you controlled Ezio from when he was 17 to his late 30s. I anticipated a dramatic story where Ezio's life turned completely shit and everything was dreadful. He won some battles, but also lost from time to time, and at the end he would've failed and left to hide for years, growing older and weaker. But he took up his sword again for the final time on his final mission for revenge, and the final part of the game would've been an older Ezio finally defeating his long time enemy.

And I wanted more mystery in the future-story as well. Questions would be answered and I would be satisfied, all my hype would've been rewarded. What I got was really what you should have expected... And perhaps this is spoilers, but it's revealed in the first 5 minutes anyway, so who cares? But I'll warn for spoilers anyway

Everything is revealed extremely fast, that the scientist is a member of the Templar (which was only hinted at in a very subtle way in the first game) and you must run away with his assistant who is part of the Assasin's Altair was a member of. You travel to another place where the mysterious and evil scientist that you where very curious about his motives has been replaced by a smart, ambitious girl in her 20s who can do anything the Templars can do even though she doesn't have any where near the amount of money they have, and also she is a very hyper girl, the assistant, who has the hots for you, and the stereotypical British guy who is constantly sarcastic.

Ezio's storyline starts of promising, with the darkness over it that I wanted, but it quickly disappears. No hints of demons that haunt him in almost the entire game, no other lovable character you get to know gets killed of and in the end, nothing really tragic has happened expect in the beginning. I wanted a dark and depressing story, but that was only in the beginning.

So you can see, while the gameplay is better than ever and it's a really fun game, the tone and story is a disappointment, at least for me.

Was I really the only one that felt this? I expected something in the way of a classical Italian quest for revenge that is harsh and cold, but what I got was plot twists in the spirit of Shyamalan, and stereotypical characters. Also, I didn't like that it was humor in the game, I know it's fun, but I want more seriousness. In the beginning it was OK, but later it was just stupid.

Subtle?! How was that subtley hinted at? They may as well have just shouted it at you. Really fucking loud. Can't speak for the rest of it, haven't played the second yet. Looks fantastic though.

Well I felt it was subtle anyway. And they did in fact scream it at you in the second game. So while it may not have been very subtle, it was at least more subtle than the second.

If you talk to the girl after every mission and actualy check both computers this is extremely obvious that shes working with the assassins and that the doctor is a templar. Its in no way subtle you just have to take the intitive to find out.

Disagree completely.

Ezzio is far more likeable and sympathetic character than emo sulky-face Altair.

There is humour, emotion and depth in the story, things AC1 never had.

Fair point. Although it should have been obvious at the end, especially when the eagle vision kicks in, so ti isn't too big a deal. Although I can understand your dissapointment.

That is actually subtle, since it's not mandatory to look for these things and you need to investigate to find it out.

Oh, I agree with that. It's just... not the kind of tone I wanted. At least in the end of AC1 it felt like you had nobody on your side and everyone was against you (or I felt that anyway). In AC2, it's kind of the opposite.

Because all Shia LaBeouf does is walk around and *****, too?

I DO think the 2nd game is lacking some of the strength of Narrative, but i'm happy it's finally moving us towards Desmond becoming an assasin, and maybe someday we can skip the animus shit and just have Desmond killing shit in the modern era.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that complaint.

Are there no guns in America at the time Desmond exists? (Which is like 2016 or something) He is going to become the best assasin ever by learing how to use knifes, swords and such in the age of modern warfare?

Oh god I hope AC3 doesn't turn into a third person shooter...

Although I've yet to play AC2, I disagree that Altair was unlikeable. Sure, he was at the beginning, but throughout the story, you can see him genuinely questioning and reforming, and his relationship with Malak and its evolution was downright fascinating.

3rd person shooter? Of course not! When there is a AC3 I think it would take place around the 1600 or 1700's (maybe England or France) there would be a pistol or 2 and maybe some guards with some rifles (replace rooftop archers with riflemen with 15 secound reload muskets) and alittle more Desmond action in the present day as desmond uses his new skills. I doubt Ubisoft would ever take AC3 into the 3rd person shooter catagory.

I REALLY hope so. Although I don't see how they'll be able to make Desmond a credible Assasin in the present day without using guns. Would be... goofy.

I'm hoping for the french revolution in the next game.

A French Revolution era AC3 would be awesome it's alittle close to the 1800's when it ends but it could fit well. Present day Desmond could be a credible assasssin because in the game...

At the end when the Templars bust in there hideout all the guards had those riot sticks to fight with...not one gun. So either they where just the company goons with a low budget or these templars and assassins stick really close to there ways even in the near future.

Say what you want about the Templars, but they keep it authentic.

I really liked both games. Your problem with it sounds like it wasn't the tone you wanted but i think AC2 is undeniably the better one. You say "Ezio's storyline starts of promising, with the darkness over it that I wanted, but it quickly disappears. No hints of demons that haunt him in almost the entire game, no other lovable character you get to know gets killed of and in the end, nothing really tragic has happened expect in the beginning. I wanted a dark and depressing story, but that was only in the beginning." I don't know why you wanted to play a character who is haunted by the demons of his past or why you wanted a "dark and depressing" story. I'll try not to make any emo jokes, but I felt that in the first game Desmond was very powerless, scared and trying to figure out what was going on, like Altair didn't know what was going on behind the scenes of his organization. The tone of the second game was supposed to show a change in both characters. Desmond was wronged in the last game by the organization but is now finding out how to get revenge, just as Ezzio is wronged at the beginning but figures out how to get revenge. I thought the story was supposed to start dark, but be more bright by the end to show the change in the characters.

Altair was a faceless **** who had no personality and was extremely boring. Ezio actually has depth, is badass AND gets some PUSSY!
