Disagree completely.

Ezzio is far more likeable and sympathetic character than emo sulky-face Altair.

There is humour, emotion and depth in the story, things AC1 never had.
Although I've yet to play AC2, I disagree that Altair was unlikeable. Sure, he was at the beginning, but throughout the story, you can see him genuinely questioning and reforming, and his relationship with Malak and its evolution was downright fascinating.
Fair enough, I personally found the voice acting very substandard for the character too, but it's all a matter of taste.

Yeah, the VA wasn't the best, but he wasn't bad enough to make me really dislike the character either.

Altair was a faceless **** who had no personality and was extremely boring. Ezio actually has depth, is badass AND gets some PUSSY!
Really? You think that about Altair? I'll just quote my earlier post to save time.

AC I Was a great game, but the gameplay was very lacking... but still very enjoyable. But Altair, the only problem was that he wasn't anybody. You have no background info, no knowledge on how he joined the Assassins... nothing. All we know is that he's badass.
Very badass.

I loved AC II even more, but I agree, the tone of the story could have been more dark, I enjoyed it. You get to see you Ezio was, and who he became, and who he turned assassin, unlike Altair who was just... so overall Ezio had a lot more Character Development.
Though I would've like the Uncle to betray him or something... :/ Disappointment there.

Assassin's Creed was good. Assassin's Creed II was better. The only thing I found myself complaining about was the ending.
