Advice needed

I've just been out for a run round my block, only 1/3 of a mile and i managed it in around 3 and a half minutes, I'm happy with the time but it's knackered me, i got really light headed and my breathing felt a bit funny..

I'm hoping to enter the Royal Navy once I finish uni, but I need to have passed the basic fitness far earlier which mean being able to run a mile and a half in 12 minutes or less.

Basically what I'm getting at is I need some advice on getting in to shape from any of you, especially those of you with past military service or any other physically demanding careers.

Keep practicing that every day until it becomes second nature, then push yourself further. I know because I'm building up for the US Army...

You need to do the full distance at a slow pace no matter how long it takes. Better times and general fitness will come in time.

You should learn to breathe properly too (most people starting out have to). From the stomach to the chest, not just your chest as so many people do.

well, I can't say I'm physically fit myself, but if I'm going to get a degree in Circus Arts as I intend to (I kid you not [http://www.thecircusspace.co.uk/quicklaunch/qldegree.htm]), then I'm going to need to muscle up too.

The only recommendation I can give is eat lots, and eat healthily. If your going to train your going to need a lot of energy to burn up into muscle.

Maybe join a local gym? Personally I find a gym provides the best atmosphere for getting fit.
However if you do that, make sure you also run outside, 2 miles on a treadmill is a lot easier than 2 miles on the road. Not sure why, it just is.

Oh, and after training, eat/drink protein (could be in the form of milk). Not sure about how much carbonhydrates you should eat/drink but I'm sure it won't hurt.

Usually after I've been out for a run (about 9 km), I drink a cup of milk or chocolatemilk. It works fine I guess.
