It's the place where a lot of people go, plain and simple. Why advertise anywhere else?
The quantity of people on there.
The tendency of those people to be somewhat affluent.
Need I say more? I hope not because I can't think of any other points.

Because Facebook is like one of the biggest websites out there, and people obsessively check it all the time, which means more page views, which means if you advertise on there you're going to be more likely to get a product out than by say, putting up an ad on a MLP fansite

I first read that as "quality" and I was going to laugh at you. But no, you had to go ahead and take my enjoyment from me.

OT: Pretty much what Broady Brio and Lionsfan said - huge website with huge audience which turns it into huge target for advertisement. Pure and simple - money and exploitation. Money for those who aren't using the site and exploitation for everybody else.

As everyone has already said there is a good reason for the advertisements, the large quantity of people using Facebook. However, I have no idea why one would have an account on Facebook. I just don't see a use for it.

Because you're the 'edgy' socialising is for losers type? I prefer relationships I can maintain either face to face or over the phone, but it's not always possible.

I sense some hostility with that post.

In any case, there are other was to maintain communication without Facebook. Also, I know people that are or were addicted to Facebook and spend most of their time posting everything they do, whether it is important or not. That seems less social than not liking Facebook in my opinion.

Also I don't think socialising is for losers, I have friends. However, I don't care to meet other people.

I shut off my facebook about a year ago and I honestly haven't been missing much. I regularly pruned my friends list and never had more than 60 at any point. Today my girlfriend showed me something called the butter dance. Again, I am not missing much.

Do you know what blew my mind about facebook? These kids that have like 1,000+ friends, like just added everyone in their highschool. I just don't get it. I graduated in 2000, and when I read through the names from my classs- I can't remember about 75% of those people.

Also, my kid does not get to use facebook or any social media until they are 16, and they are old enough to understand what goes on the web can be made widely public, is mostly permament, and you're responsible. My kid is going to hate me, but there is no god damn reason for a 12 year old to have a facebook, or a cell phone for that matter. If I want to know where you are, I will yell your name across the neighborhood, and if you can't hear me- than you are somewhere you shouldn't be.

People are just ridiculous with this stuff today.

P.S.

I don't have any real close friends any more. People get married, have children, move away, or all three. Sometimes they marry your ex girlfriend and stop talking to you. There's no one on facebook for me anyway, friend or family wise. My father was born on a farm in Italy back in 1944. He has the equivalent of an 8th grade education. The only time he ever touched a computer was when a friend gave him porno CD ROM to try. He woke me up one morning and asked me to fix the computer. There was a piece of masking tape on the monitor. I turned it on and the desktop background had been changed to a naked woman. The tape was over her vagina. He was panicked. I think that was the first and last time he ever touched a computer.

I have one friend I see about once a week, we don't really hang out much outside of a diner we like to visit. Whenever I call him he always rags on me for not having facebook anymore and not seeing whatever thing he posted... and I always just tell him that's why we invented the telephone, and why I picked it up and called his ass.

Because everyone and their mother is on it. Literally. Your mother is probably on it, or at least she soon will be. And, when everyone is on something, it becomes easy to use that thing as a media outlet. With that many people recognizing a symbol, they associate with products more, or at least, more frequently than they would without, and what happens is that while your mother is spamming our notice pages with seven year old images and cheesy, trite sayings, she's being marketed to. Plain and simple.

I love your avatar. Just thought I'd tell you.

On topic, I have a FB because...My friends have one? And there are some people that I can only communicate with via the internet due to distance, and FB makes that easier.

Also, a lot of amusement can be draw from FB.

I'm as bewildered as you. I've just signed up recently (for the first time) so I can use it as a news feed/marketing tool for my business website, and honestly, I hate the layout, and it is surprisingly lacking in features (I like that for my purposes-I prefer the simplicity-but I don't see the appeal).

While I'm here though, I see no harm in like whoring. I'm not entirely sure what it accomplishes, but it seems to be the done thing, so it may make an impact in the future - So get in there and like that shit. http://www.facebook.com/trigabytecomputers

Facebook did to social networking what World of Warcraft did to fantasy MMORPGs... advertised it straight into mainstream consciousness. People use it now because people they know use it, and any other service offering the same thing with better features or a more usable interface gets marginalized because it all draws from the same pool of users... and everyone who uses such a service on a daily basis is on Facebook.

Glad I have no need or desire for a social networking account... I'm still on all the old messenger services through Pidgin.

I too once thought as you did, but then I got a Tribes Beta Invite off of there and 250 gold. Worth it.
