Question, Does aim assist affect aim when using the iron sights? or is it just when shooting from the hip? As I nvr had that problem in W@W, MW2, or BC2, and I dont recall turning Aim assist off... this is all on the 360, BTW.

im a console gamer and id say i was average at FPS but what annoys me is aim assist. people can use it to lock on with snipers etc.

but the epitome of what is wrong with aim assist hit me like an unexpected kick in face today while playing COD 4. i use the skorpion and im sure you know that its ammo consumption is somewhat low and my ammo was deminished because my opponent had deviously used juggernaut and absorbed my bullets like a dry sponge, so i knew he was almost dead so i whipped out my USP like james bond and aimed at his head and as i done so his team mate waltzed infront of him and my aim locked onto his team mate, i hasten to add that i was unduly defeated by my foe at such a crucial moment as i was 1 kill away from a helicopter

so i ask thee, do you think we need aim assist. i say we throw of the shackles of gaming oppression and start aiming.
the real question should be "why is there aim assist in PC games?"

FPSs on the Consoles rely more on proper timing of your shots rather then precision in your aiming. This is how it has always been, all the way back to Wolfenstein 3d on the SNES.. going forward into Doom, and then GoldenEye, then Halo and all the games since then. Precision Aiming just has never been in the cards. It's ALL about timing your shots.

You know there's an option to turn that off, right?
The tragic truth is is that some games don't have that option and simply leave aim-assist implemented at all times, like in Halo: Reach. That pissed me off so much yesterday when the aim-assist was screwing up my aim and I found out there was no option to turn it off.

Yes. We do need aim assist.
Have you ever played a console FPS without aim assist. It's difficult. Very difficult.
No, not that difficult. Obviously you just need to get good at aiming, like with all FPS games. Console FPS games are no different.

I can't count the amount of times I've been about to shoot a guy, then someone else has walked by, and my mystical crosshairs decide lock on to him instead and totally fuck up my shot, so I miss both of them, and get gunned down. I must look like a right idiot to everyone else, shooting thin air...
That happened to me too in Halo: Reach yesterday, I was outraged.

I almost always turn it off. Not because it makes it that much more annoying, it just feels a bit like cheating to me.
I feel the same way. I think it's stupid that developers implement aim-assist into most FPS games by default because they think we can't practice enough to be able to aim well without it. I'd rather not use it and get good at aiming with my own skills than to use a stupid aid.

I have no idea why some of these companies leave aim assist in multiplayer.
because the only reason fps games work on consoles is because of aim assist, without it on multi then they would be vastly inferior to pc multi, instead of just inferior
NO, NO, JUST NO. Saying that console FPSs can only work with aim assist is just putting down console FPSs. If that was true then every shooter would implement it without question but there are plenty of them that allow the option to turn it off. Just because it is difficult to aim without aim assist doesn't mean it's impossible, so people need to stop saying that, makes them sound like your typical K+M elitists who always feel the need to bash controllers.
What he said.

I turn it off because if you can aim without it, it gets in the way.

The controller has its drawbacks, and in many games, the thumbstick makes aiming alightly umm....... retarded? Yeah, that word will work.

I personally do enjoy the feel of a controller over a keyboard and mouse for most games, but aim assist is like a crutch.

With some games ((MW2 springs to mind)) its more of an exploit then an assist though.

Your problem seems to stem from the "lock-on" aim assist that plagues Aim Down Sight shooters. Never been a big fan of that one, as it seems to decide to screw with you at the worst times.

I'm fine with the sort of "passive" aim assist or magnetism in Halo, because it works only in the effective range of the weapon, and doesn't really track your aim as much as it guides your bullets. You get less of the "WTF lock-on fail" moments like you described.

I would like to be able to change how sensitive the aim assist is a low/medium/high or even better a slider bar.

Analog sticks are usually poorly implemented, and have some form of acceleration, So if you move the stick a little bit over, it jerks to one side, but if you move it over one direction at .05 micrometers an hour, it'll be really precise.

That's my gripe with it.

The workaround: Strafe and fire when the cross hair touches your target. Moving can sadly be more precise than looking around. Especially if the game has iron sights, because then you move crazy slow and there is no acceleration.

Auto-Aim is just to help with the learning curve..you can get by without it with practice....just like everything else. ...Except playing Prince of Persia on a keyboard. ..That still gives me nightmares *shudder*

You guys totally need to learn to aim with a gamepad: after enough hours, it gets pretty damn easy. Much more comfortable with Xbox 360 TF2 than PC...

If you have ever played W@W on the wii the only reason to use aim assist is so you can knife people I played without aim assist for ages in that game and then turned it on the aim assist made me play worse. Though the wii zapper made the aiming very easy when you adjusted it properly and the wii is a different case to the other consoles in FPS land.
