Well, basically Akinator learns more and more people/things all the time, people add new stuff to it's database, not just one guy. So yeah, it's Skynet.
hell, it even guessed John Preston, the protagonist in the movie Equilibrium.
I really was amazed when i first found Akinator. Quite cool.

I still remember the first (and most popular) thread a few months ago about this website, the first few pages were full of people who were all, "OMG HE GUESSED MARIO! HOW DID HE DO THAT? AND OMG HE GOT MASTER CHIEF! ZOMG MAGIC". It made me laugh.

I've beaten it a few times, with characters like Madame Blueberry from VeggieTales (Yeah, I was one of those kids), and the village chief from Jungle Wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu. But hey, I never expected it to get that last one, anyway.

I beat it the second time with Lilith from Unreal Championship 2, about 30 questions in it completely forget I said it was a female and guessed some random dude from Metal Gear Solid.

I just tried this again for the first time in months. I was thinking of Walton Simons and was surprised that it asked me if my character was Swedish. I realized why it was a relevant question now - due to the popularity of Minecraft. I played again, thinking of Notch, and it figured it out exceedingly quickly.

Kind of reminds me of Cleverbot.
Second time I played it guessed Herobrine and was right again, and when I tried to stump it on something more obscure I tried a character from an Anime that I don't even remember the name of and it got it right.

It works in the same way as 20 questions, so yes as you said a big database. It has a bunch of questions and when someone uploads a character that isn't there yet, they fill in the criteria, ie blonde hair, are they male, are they real / famous etc... with yes or no answers. When you do your character akinator asks random questions and just sees which one fits. It's almost like a huge virtual version of Guess Who

I have a feeling it uses some sort of connection to a wikipedia or something, database that can use keywords you use to narrow down a search, and then decide on a most fitting answer.
