Alan Wake Dev Is Disappointed With Game Journalists

Remedy's Matias Myllyrinne isn't angry, he's just disappointed with game journalists who posted leaked Alan Wake [http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=76175] footage.

Late last week, footage of the first 10 minutes or so of Alan Wake began finding its way around the internet, as these things are wont to do. Myllyrinne, Remedy's managing director, was less than thrilled that game journalists chose to post the clips, Tweeting [http://twitter.com/MausRMD/status/12327533957]:

Game journalism is not about playing a game in 10 minute segments and posting random quality videos on the net. Disappointed.

It's an interesting comment, given his earlier Tweet of "Annoyed someone leaked 11 minutes of wake.., spoilers out there." Random people giving away his game's secrets is certainly an understandable gripe, but Myllyrinne seems to be just as miffed that videos being posted are of varying quality. That may be because Microsoft is saying that Alan Wake "sets the bar" [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/99802-Remedy-Releases-Alan-Wake-Building-the-Thriller-Video] for cinematic action, and Myllyrinne is afraid that the leaked vids don't do the game justice. Or maybe he's just plain nervous about the game's impending release.

Alan Wake has been in development for, it seems, a period of time just slightly shorter than the Bronze Age, with its eventual emergence frequently in doubt. Now that it's finally scheduled to see the light of day (for reals!), it wouldn't be unreasonable for Myllyrinne and crew to be a bit anxious about its reception.

Fear not, Matias. Spoilers and shoddy video quality be damned, Alan Wake was one of my Five Favorites [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/conferences/e3_2009/6152-Susans-Five-Favorites-from-E3] from last year's E3, and I'm still anxious to get my hands on it.

Alan Wake comes out on May 14 in Europe and May 18 in North America.

I hate it when they say they are disappointed it just gets to you rather than they are angry.

OT:Spoilers are a way of life dosn't Matias Myllyrinne realise that.

Well this seems like perfectly reasonable response to... wait what?

Maybe he is feigning disappointment to draw attention to the footage. That is certainly what he is doing, intentionally or not. Now I want to see it.

well, alright. I thought he was sad because journalists said they didn't like the looks of the game so far...
He may be dissappointed, but it'll still happen

Well, I'm not terribly surprised with all of the back and forth between Europe and the US right now. The US is a bigger market, but the EU has stronger currency and is basically trying to overcome tot he US as the dominant economic power. I think a lot of companies are experimenting with the European market to see what happens if they do things like release there before, not to mention that games with a lot of European development (which I am guessing this has) are doubtlessly seeing increased pressure to release in Europe first for the sake of national pride if nothing else (specifically so they can say they had something first, which is becoming a big thing for a lot of Euro-gamers... not to mention piracy in some cases being "justified" by the pirates for nationalistic reasons having to do with the order of release. Once in a while I've seen some rants like during before-release footage by pirates).

Just my thoughts on that subject. The bottom line is, that whether you agree with the above or not, I think we're going to see a more reasonable european release schedule, especially from games with a lot of overseas production. Truthfully though I'd personally prefer to see simultaneous releases rather than races over who gets the same first (I've always held this position, but for whatever reason I see to be in a minority, game release dates seem to have somehow become a competition).

As far as game journalism goes, well I can see the point on a lot of levels. People releasing footage and game information that opening makes you wonder how many of those journalists are also willing to leak the game to pirates outright. Not to mention the simple fact that the footage is not controlled by the company and might ruin/spoil the game, or
lead to people doctoring it for whatever reason.

Let's say something silly gets absurd, and captures the imagination of say 4Chan's /B/ board. Weeks or even months before a game's official release you have memes which may or may not be offensive all over the place, which are just as likely to turn off potential customers as attract them.

Nothing stays secret anymore. It's all about been the first...

I can understand the dissapointment, but really he should have known it would happen eventually

I can understand his consternation, but it's stupid. You don't get angry (excuse me, "disappointed") with the journalists who get sent something big; you get angry with the person that leaked it.

Does Steve Jobs cry to the industry when they leak the iPhone? No. So this guy should get over it and be glad people are still interested in this long delayed game. By the time it comes out unless you just want it that bad and keep looking at the trailer you'll forget about the trailer

Each time I hear anyone inolved with Alan Wake speak, the more I anticipate a Metacritic score in the 60s.

Of couse 10 minutes of leaked footage is gaming jouralism.

I wont be playing it, I dislike consoles greatly. It was a Dx10 flagship title, theres no reason it cant be PC too, they protest they are too small a company, surely, being part of EA they could let some other studio port it across, I dont mind a few months delay.
Exclusivity hurts sales, I doubt Alan Wake is going to shift more 360's

Like I said in another post that was Foxconn. Apple doesn't even manufacture the phones they just design them. Plus I don't think Steve has time for that. He'll get the lower level guys to do it while he does his best jigsaw impersonation. "You have failed me for the last time. If you want to live as an Apple employee, which is the only way to live, you must past these trials. Cut thine hand for I am Jesus and you lost the Jesus phone or Bob from accounting will kill you. You have till I load the NY Times on a New York 3G connection. So about an hour lol."
