I don't really know, I haven't had more than a little champagne in almost half a year. Ever since I started smoking, I barely even thought about drinking.

I've kinda come full circle. It has stopped being fun. As for why it's sad to drink alone? Theres a certain wall you hit, after it stops being fun, where you're clicking through youtube videos at 3 am in the morning amongst your empty cans and taco bell wrappers wondering "where the fuck is my life going?"

EDIT: Have you played Max Payne 3? That's when drinking alone starts to become sad.
ehh.....I don;t see whats so sad about that
Max's life revolving around the drink, getting fucked up in his off hours till he was a bumbling incoherent mess?

I remember when I was a little kid I asked my dad what his beer tasted like. He let me have a sip and I couldn't stand the taste. That was effective in keeping me away from alcohol for a long time. I didn't really drink much until I was in my 20s. Even then I wouldn't touch the stuff unless I was at a party. I did start to cut back after blacking out several years ago. These days if I feel the need I pour myself a glass of whiskey or scotch with those trendy ice cube rocks. To answer the question though, I don't see a problem with drinking socially or by yourself.

May winds blow and barley grow
May Guinness flow in rivers
May we drink our fill from vat and still
Yet not destroy our livers

Unfortunately I may have done some serious damage to my health. I've been a social and non social drinker since 2000 when I hit 21 but after a serious heart break I fell into depression. I found the bottle, particularly vodka and warcraft to pass my time. I got to the point of going through about two and a half 1.75l of vodka a week with beers thrown into the mix. That's a lot of alcohol and it took a few years to get to that tolerance. I just needed more and more to get drunk because that's the only reason I was drinking.

Fortunately I was introduced to an amazing woman and my drinking declined. Its still not where I would like it to be as I still have a couple of beers nearly every day. The worst part is the fact there is a stiffness in my side that can only be my enlarged liver, blood work also showed my liver functions are not so great, and still I drink. I know its killing me and I need to stop completely, but drinking is an integral part of socializing within my family and friends, so its always around me. I rahk dishiprin and have a definite addiction. Yet everyone around me says I'm not an alcoholic. I have been much more focused on weening my self off the sauce but I tell you, alcohol withdrawal SUCKS. I have been told that just stopping outright can land you in the hospital with seizures.

I know my post is a bit of a warning but drinking can be such a good time in the right company and I will say I would not be the person I am today were it not for my boozy hijinks, and I like who I am =)

Of the people that say they don't like the taste so they do not drink at all? I find this baffling, nay preposterous. Even if we take on the subject of just beers, the variety of flavors is amazing.

Cheap beers taste like piss. Any questions?

Spend the money, buy craft beer, your taste buds will thank you. Magic Hat, Stone, Bluepoint, Wachusett, Angry Orchard, Fat Tire, hell even Sam Adams has a good selection.

Booze does not all taste the same, alcohol made from a potato does not taste the same as one made from grapes. They also produce different types of drunkenness. Tequila drunk for instance is waaaay different than say rum drunk or beer drunk.

Anyways, drinking in moderation is so far considered by most health organizations healthy. But there is that razors edge, don't fall over it like I did, life is too short to be a prude but don't take it to the point you shorten that life even more.

Alcohol is great, I don't go out and get drunk every weekend but it is nice. As long as you don't pass out.

I'll drink anything as long as it is not too sweet, no cruisers for me XD Honey whiskey is amazing however.

The Budweiser Project 12 stuff is actually all pretty good as well.

People should also look into local and regional microbreweries. Magic Hat and Stone are delicious, but ubiquitous.

Fat tire I don't think I've had outside of the Midwest, but I like it. I really like Dog Fish Head, but that's like an East Coast Beer. Friends back in the Midwest can't seem to find it.

I know I've commented and made threads about the taste of alcohol before but I'm getting used to it.
Some kinds of beer are good, and I like whiskey mixed with Dr. Pepper--I call it P-Dizzle.

I enjoy beer, but I don't enjoy parties. That and I can't buy it myself yet so I tend to stick to soda and water anyway.

Though I've learned that after 1 and a half beers I do much better at video games. Past that and I start to do worse.

its great in moderation, very good for shy people to let loose a bit.. in moderation. in excess its horrible. i avoid people who drink in excess but don't mind a few drinks with people who also like a few drinks and don't get drunk... or to drunk at least.

I love beer, scotch, wine, Caipirinhas (The national drink of Brasil!) and the occasional Gin & Tonic or Martini. I tend to have a drink or two at the end of the day, and sometimes more on weekends. That's probably more than a person technically should be drinking, but it doesn't seem like much.

I dont drink. I dont like it. I find it stupid. I tried, didnt liek the taste either (except for a few drinks), but i dont consume alcohol.
Its kinda funny, when i go to a aprty with my uni class or soemthing, they all start partying and everything and notice that i dont consume alcohol, and then i have to explain 20 times over and over again that i dont drink. eventually they get the idea they cant force me to drink and go on partying. friends understand and thats all that i care about.

i find it silly that people cant have fun without getting drunk....

Well I can't drink for once, it's not that I dislike the flavour but I vomit as soon as I have a sip of it, not even sure why it just happens, though my relationship with alcohol is a little more complicated due to coming from 3 different tequila brewing families and having a wine enthusiast as a father[footnote]Though not alcoholic, I've only seen him drunk twice and both are fairly recent.[/footnote], I keep being pushed and pressured into it and I have tried it a lot of times I just can't do it, I guess I'm too lame or something, I do have a collection of unopened tequila bottles in my house though.

Funnily enough people tend to think I'm a drunk because I stumble and trip a lot while I walk, I just lose balance when I'm tired.

"Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy." Benjamin Franklin.
While I am not be religious but I just love this quote. And also, I don't drink that often, when I do it is responsibly with friends.

Life is sad, hell when you boil life down to it's essence the entire thing is nothing but a struggle ending in death, when you are drunk and alone, hell when I'm alone and sober, there is eventually this point when that fact becomes incredibly clear, and you either wither a little inside, and find yourself truly more lost than you ever have been before, and the loneliness starts to feel more real than ever, the walls close in, and you feel like "this is it, this is all life is."...

At least that's how it is for me... Of course, for me due to struggling with extremely strong depression since I was very young, every day seems harder than the last, and if I don't drown myself in booze, lose myself in a haze of pot smoke, or surround myself with music or people constantly I find myself consumed by a soul crushing dread, it's like nothing matters, I just want to curl up and die, but I know I can't, I refuse to just die, people have invested so much in me not dying, I can't not pay them back, but I know that it doesn't stop the pain, so the dread grows more, the realization that I don't even have an out, that I will force myself to suffer until something else kills me, so I tempt fate, I drink heavily, maybe I won't wake up one of these times... I just hope my friends can forgive my selfishness...

I didn't drink until college and then I drank only when I wasn't doing anything the next day and I drank a lot. Lots of great parties, great fights, and bad decisions. Now I don't party any more so I don't drink very much.

I'm more of a party drunk... social drinking just isn't my thing. Though social drinking events are a great way to get opportunities. So I generally sip on a glass all night and wait for the higher ups to get drunk.

I see a lot of people complain about the taste of alcohol. From my experience, most alcoholic drinks are something you need to develop an acquired taste for. It'll take drinking a few glasses of wine over time, or having several glasses of whiskey (not in one night). Few people taste an alcoholic drink and enjoy it the first time.

You might ask why bother getting used to a taste when you can just have a glass of coke and enjoy it from the first time. Well once you've acquired the taste for alcohol, you get to enjoy an enormous array of different beverages, many with complex depth of flavour. There's a reason it's so popular beyond just getting pissed.

If you're someone who hates the taste, but aren't averse to the idea of drinking, just keep trying. For years I hated wine, but once I tried it a couple more times I really started to enjoy the taste.

I drink by myself. Nothin is better then after a hard day of work, coming back home and having a nice cold beer. Especially in summer. I tend not to get drunk by myself.

At parties I will drink, it's good fun and I enjoy it.

When I drink...I get drunk, thus I'm quite untrustworthy to take into a pub for a "quick" pint, as not only do I drink like a fish, I've found I'm very good at coercing everyone else into getting pretty drunk. Overall though, I'm an organized waster, I always make sure all my affairs are in order in good time, thus I have lots of time to be a waster.

It's the people that don't "get" getting drunk that wierd me out, fair enough if you don't like it, but I'm not sure what there isn't to get.
