ya don't say....

that's probably the dumbest statement i've ever read.
I was just thinking the same thing, "WW2 was a good war if you discount all the haters." How stupid can you ge-IF I HAVE TO KILL YOU SHEPARD I WILL.
I guess AvP is one of those extremely polar games, where you either really like it or hate it. You know, like the Halo franchise. Actually, Halo was critically and commercially acclaimed; on the consumer level is where it polarized. Perhaps the opposite effect is happening to AvP, where the critics are polar and the consumers - I KNOW YOU FEEL THIS, SHEPARD.
But it's not even Halo-esque. The game recieved all kinds of hate. I loved the Russ Pitt's review on this site, because he pointed out the most important thing: Is it fun? Is it fun preforming amateur chiropracty on Marines? Yes, it is. And the shit reviews it gets because it's graphics aren't "up to par" or the mechanics are from an older Generation are bogus. The reviews universally said, "Oh, there's better shooters..." but AVP is not like the other shooters currently out there. It's unique and fun, which is not accurately reflected in the reviews.

It's less a question of Halo-fanboyism and more--ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL.

The game was made here in the UK? Well, gonna have to go buy it to support our lads *puts on patriotic British had on*

Only played the demo, loved it, I will get round to buying it soon but need to get bored of another new game first.

If you discount all the bad reviews we actually have a good overall score. Yeah and if you discount all the money we give on tax and food we are all filthy rich!

Those of you saying "you can't disregard scores" are aware that disregarding outliers is pretty common in statistical analysis, because it whacks out the data, right?

This game has been reviewed dozens of times, with most scores falling between 65-85%. those three scores are WILDLY out of synch with the rest of the reviews the game has recieved, and DO artificially drag down the average. They aren't representative of the general opinion of the game.

In that case, it's totally reasonable to ignore them to get a better look at how the game is being critically recieved.

I mean, a lot of aggregate judging throws out your highest and lowest scores to try and get a more reliable average. I think you have the right to complain if you get three totally terrible reviews, especially when you've gotten OK to GOOD reviews from everyone else, and you're game is selling fabulously.

I'm going to wait for Yahtzee to review it before picking up a copy of AvP. I know IGN gave it a pretty mediocre review, but as is well known IGN fail at pretty much everything these days. Yahtzee, I trust.
Ug, let me sumerize Yahtzee's non-review for you. Remember you heard it here first:

Point 1: The movies were shit.
Point 2: The campaigns are short.
Point 3: The controls aren't easy to use.
Point 4: Probably something about the phallic appearance of the Aliens.

And, of course, he won't dip into the game's insanely addictive multiplayer, which is the main reason I'm still playing this game.

I mean, Yahtzee is -- MY ATTACKS WILL TEAR YOU APART!

Well like Yahtzee I don't care for multiplayer at all and am one of those old fashion gamers who believes that a game needs to be able to stand up on the single player alone. The other fact is that about 85% of the time, Yahtzee is completely correct about the games he reviews. Saints Row 2 for example, I bought that under his word and loved every second of it.

Didn't one of those bad reviews complain that the Predator sections where too focused on stealth? Or at least that's what I heard on the Angry Joe show.
Have they even watched the trailer for Predator? Predator=Stealth. You're not going to jump down from a tree and PC spam all the marines... Are you?

OT:Well Rebellion, you should know bad reviews after the Shellshock series.

Actually having played the game I can slightly see where they where coming from. You get hardly any ammo for the weapons. Granted you can recharge it from power packs, but its not like the old games where it recharges on its own.

Well, obviously lots of reviews are horrible, but that's kind of the way it is. People payed to criticize games aren't professionals in the field at all. This includes "reviewers" that tend to say nice things too, of course.

I love how he says that its the fault of some Americans.

I like this man. I like the way he's blunt with it. He pleases me.

It is fun, no doubt about that. I think the bad reviews were aimed at the graphics as you say, but I found that the game lacks in variety and length, both of which are a lot more important than how it looks(since the graphics are still ok). I mean, I haven't heard anyone complaining about the fact that there's only 5 guns for the marine (one of which you get to use only twice), or that the predator went from having a varied arsenal in AvP2 to having 3 weapons that do the same thing (I can't hit people with my combistick so I throw it at them? why do I have a shoulder cannon then? and why did they remove autoaim from the disk? it being automatic was the whole point of the weapon) and a boring mine.

I also believe Rebellion should pay attention to bad reviews instead of just dismissing them. Learn from the things people didn't like (like a 5-mission-3-hours-long alien campaign) and make an improved product next time.

Meh, all true.

The game could have been much better. True. Even though I'm a total fan of the game, I can see where, if you weren't having fun with multi-player, then the game would be tripe for you. Not only did the campaigns lack depth, but I was annoyed with playing through EXACTLY the same levels over and over again...

Yeah, you visited the same locations in the previous AVP games, and it was fun to see how things changed as you visited them. But you didn't walk through exactly the same rooms, which looked precisely the same before and after.

I also am not a fan of the Survivor game mode. It's interesting, but it's not amazing. I would have really liked to see a Predator Survival mode, too. That would have been really awesome.

Finally, I appreciated that the previous games were set in the Alien universe featuring Predators. This one was set more or less in the AVP universe established by the movie, which was kind of crappy.

I guess a seperate point, I also see the criticisms of the guns/weapons. Like the flame-thrower is a total piece of crap. Aliens explode when you kill them? Who thought that was a good idea? You have to get right in their face to fight them with the flame thrower, and then they blow up and spray you with Acid killing you.

The Pred weapons... The mines are actually pretty sexy, if you have time to place them and stay alive long enough to kill with them. I had a great game were I would extend normal 3-4 kill streaks to 7-8 with just random mine kills.

The combi stick is very different from the plasma caster, imo. It takes less time to draw and throw than the plasma caster takes to charge and lock on. It is also more reliable at close ranges. But it's tiny, tiny hit area vs the relative noobness of the Plasma Caster makes the usage entirely different. Plus combi stick kills feel sexier because they're so much harder to pull off. It would be better, IMO if you weren't decloaked throwing the combi-stick. That would make it a much more balanced version of the spear gun. The old combi stick was basically just a better version of the Pred claws, and it's addition to this game would make the Predator totally OP. They're already crazy in melee. They don't need even more range and damage, that's for sure.

The disc... I like it better as a no-lock on. Right now, the ability to make it follow your targeting laser is pretty cool. When it was a lock on, it seemed even cheaper to me. There's an inherent chance it will miss, as it is.

I've played it. I thought that the graphics were allright, and the gameplay IS fun. My only problem is that the Alien Campaign is a little short.

i've only played the demo (but palyed Avp2 to death) and i enjoyed every moment of it. yeah the alien movement was a bit choppy and i mistook my own tail for a enemy alien rushing by me. i don't see why the grphics are bland to people, MW2 doesn't look that great (i see the games based on the unreal3 engine looking better) the demo looked good enough, played good enough and felt balanced (playing it i've seen marines, aliens and predators coming first). i watched the Gamespot review and it mostly sounded of nit picking like they were expecting it to be as good as MW2 or Halo 3 (which i don't like).

according to wikipedia its the fastest selling game in the UK for 2010 beating mass effect 2 so that must be a plus.

I bet it was IGN they have crappy writers, sometimes it feels like they don't even play the game before writing the review.. I have even read reviews on that website that were just wrong about what you can and cannot do in a game..
