well i'm a gamer. And whenever im talking about a game with a friend and someone overhears they also say something along the lines of "Nerd". Or "O you play games? Can you help me with___?" Some computer problem.
I don't really too much about really advanced computer things except what i'm learning in my high school computer class.
Have you ever had this happen to you? or something similar?
Does anyone thats a gamer actually have these skills?

Usually when I mention games, it's polite smiles and small talk about media-heavy stuff like GTA, or it's drunken frats demanding to know what difficulty I play on Halo/Guitar Hero/Rock Band.

As far as computer stuff, I'm proficient enough in software (for Windows, at least) to fix 90% of all problems (100% if you don't mind reformatting), and with hardware, I'm usually good enough to install most computer parts after you choose to upgrade your computer.

Next logical step for me would be learning how to actually assemble a computer from scratch, and learning enough about Mac/Linux to fix basic problems on those too.

The computer was learned through trial-and-error and being tech support for friends/family/teachers all through my various schooling and such. Plus, it's useful to know when my stuff starts breaking down as well. Overall, not a bad skill, and one I'm thankful to practice.

I'm nothing special, in both regards. I'm a pretty average gamer, and as for computer know-how, I can take care of most problems on my computer, and am the source of help for most people in my computing class, but there's better. As for academia, I'm good, but not fantastic.

Pretty much this. I must say, in the while you've been with us NewClassic, you've really integrated into the community at a remarkable rate.

Your a winner!

I'm competent enough with windows to reformat my computer, when I can be arsed to do it. Most troubleshooting is fine, though I have been known to ask for assistance. I've learned how to build computers from scratch, but I can't say I'm anywhere near the best for it.

In terms of gaming, I'm nothing overly special really. None to shabby, but I don't shine like the guiding light of the world.

Awesome! I blame being a grammar-nut by education, a typist by circumstance, and a forum-junkie by interest. Glad to know I'm not scorned, at least. Especially after that whole FoE thing...

I've been gaming for many years and was always hanging out in the "nerd herd" in school, so I was called a nerd a hell of a lot even though i'm really only good with PC's... It all depends on what you mean by "Nerd," smart with PC's or smart with maths/english/science/history or whatever... I'm terrible at maths and science but have a certificate 4 in I.T.

Plus theres nothing wrong with being a nerd :p

If it makes you feel any worse, I completely detest you.
You're supposed to be asleep. If I'm not mistaken, you detest just about everyone. I blame your wife dying in that explosion.

Honestly, I'm not a huge gamer; I probably don't spend more than a few hours a week playing games. I can fix peoples' problems in Windows and OS X, I can install and remove hardware from a desktop, and I have a working knowledge of a few programming languages (though nothing particularly advanced). I certainly wouldn't count myself as a nerd; a bit of an enthusiast, maybe, but it's not a very big part of my life.

I'm a scholarship student, but I study communications and political science, so I don't know how that works.

I am a gamer and to answer whether or not I'm a nerd as well.... I am currently studying to be a CCNA and been learning CSS in my own time. My family and friends always ask for my help, the only thing that annoyed me about that was I installed FF3 for a friend and they were like, "I think it uses spyware and is sponsered by coke because I keep getting ads in IE7", some people just don't understand these things I guess. Oh and I am studying C++, VB, Server 2003, Linux (console based) and have been learning about how the Microsoft kernel system works.

So I couldn't be considered a nerd could I?

I usually sleep for about half an hour. And no, I'm still Taxi Driver's sex slave.
He's like...16!

I think I hear the 4chan party van.

Well I'm a Computer systems engineering major in college right now. So I suppose the answer for me personally is yes. I do know a bit about computers.
