I think guns are a strange exception to the "only stuff made in america is great!" mindset of some people. well, that and liquor obviously. In fact i do know a few gun owners that go gaga for WW2 German weapons, which makes even less sense than liking an AK as we fought a bloody war against the germans.

Being a gun enthusiast often means no barriers as to where/who made a firearm, but that it exists. The irony being that we as Muricans can own these arms while those in their mother countries, (typically)cannot, so it's a bit of that as well for some people.

Though, you're probably going to be seeing more AR-15s and the like in more "red blooded" areas while AKs would be in areas where people don't have such biases.
