Okay, this is just incompetence. If you place an advantage in front of someone, they're going to bloody take it! When several thousand dollars is at stake, all honor and pride goes out the window. They absolutely should have known better and besides, there is ALREADY a fix for this!

Other LoL competitions place the teams in separate rooms AND put the main monitor stream on a 2 minute delay so that even if one of the teams figured out a way to see the main screen, that information would be rendered useless by the delay!

I honestly feel sorry for everyone in this situation because they damn well should have known better than to set honey in front of Winnie the Pooh and expect him not to eat it.

And you're implying that Na'Vi isn't best team.
They aren't, and the international actually proves that! Not to mention how bad they are being in the star ladder. They are the most fun to watch though.

Riot looks like a bunch of ameteurs right now.

Not only has the competition been marred by numerous technical issues
To say the least. That 15 minute break in the middle of the first semi finals game last night was riveting, let me tell you!

Riot's ineptitude has been pretty astounding. I dunno how hard it is to look at, say, MLG, and just do what those guys do (as far as functionality goes). I know that organizing events like this is hard and all, but it really does make Riot seem unprofessionally incompetent. Like the internet connections dropping out mid-game! In their own game!! Their own server! They couldn't have worked around that at all? Jimmy-rigged a LAN client for the event? Set up an in-house internet server or something? Considering the money that put into this, they really could have organized it better. And I really don't want to dismiss their effort - this is the first time doing this kind of thing and there are going to be elements they've overlooked. But the kind of things that SHOULD have occurred to them but somehow didn't... it's sad.
Generally, on a professional level, with this much money involved, even "it was our first time" is no excuse. If they don't have the expertise, they should hire it.

That said, I find it weirdly appropriate that in a game where matches so often devolve to flamewars between players, the tournament is marred by a clusterfuck of derps.
Now just blame the jungler, and everything is as it should be.

LoL... I don't know. I've played a good bit of it, and I watch the big matches, but I can't get past the feeling that it's not a competitive game in the way that Starcraft or Fighters are. Controlling one guy with a grand total of 4 moves seems a lot less skill intensive than any other e-sports event. Maybe it's just me.

So when stuff like network outages and this happen it's unsurprising. Riot has been trying to buy their way to the top of the E-sports scene for a while now, and it's not very clearly thought out.

Puppey doesn't give a fuck about the Starladder. He doesn't give a fuck about most tournaments really. He's hinted and outright said it numerous times, the most recent example being at TalkDOTA.

But yeah, they got outplayed by IG.
It's obvious they don't give a fuck, they are actually using it to try new builds and comps, even new players.

Riot really did drop the ball on all this. First the crappy internet games and not LAN I mean wtf? Then BOTH teams cheat. Of course they're not forced to pay but I'm sure that would mean a DQ from further tournaments. It's probably not out of their pocket, just whatever prize money they win.

Seriously though. This is a big deal and with ridiculous meta gamers like this just a 'quick peek' at a screen can make or break games. The game itself was won by Azubu Frost anyways but it's the principle of the thing.

Also read as their back pocket.

I was sent a picture of the stage for this event, huge screen displaying the game, huge minimaps to show where everyone was...and all this just to the side of the players. Who weren't in sound proof booths or anything

Who is running this mickey mouse operation?!? Honour system? WTF?!?! PC gaming should not have to deal with console woes like BS social rules on screen looking.

Anyway, my rule when playing split screen games is Screen-Looking is not against the rules as you can see my screen as well as I can see theirs. No unfair advantage. It just adds an interesting dimension to the game of seeing what your enemy sees at the cost of what you see.

Even games without split-screen, I'd love to see a "perk" or special ability that allowed you with either the push of a button or a picture-in-picture in top corner (like Radar in COD) showing what the enemy sees. A kinds of "second person story telling".
Yeah but LoL already gives you the chance to see the enemy and what they're doing without 'screenlooking'. Dominate the jungle and win the ward placement game and you can pretty much have the whole map visible and the enemy whereabouts at all times so there is no excuse for it.

Both teams cheated though so not like it really matters.

Wouldn't that be more entertaining though, seeing how each person reacts to each other with a full view of the map? It would create a different mindset for strategy.

I don't think Stephano could be arsed to impose anything.

I'm surprised they didn't see this coming. They ran a tourney based on one of the more hotheaded game-related fandoms to date and seriously thought the honour system would just hold out?!

Not to disparage on anyone here who might play LoL and behave like a mature adult while doing so, but the bulk of that game's community is just freaking horrible. Considering that, I'm not surprised this happened - these are play-to-win types who'll seize each and every opportunity they get. Including the illegal ones.

In my experience, at least, MOBA games seem to attract a pretty impatient and spiteful crowd.

Way to send a CLEAR message Riot! You fine them for cheating, but then say, "Woong's cheating didn't decide the winner of the game". Cheating is cheating. No need to clarify it with a statement like that.

This might just be the most retarded thing I've ever read. Glad I decided to jump on the Dota bandwagon long ago. Valve is just so incredibly professional.

Dota 2

-No cheating, people win and lose by their skill
The amount of bias is astounding.

OT: I actually watched all of these games unlike most of the people posting in this thread. Frost was the only team that the screen cheating actually massively helped them out, their opponents strategy heavily relied on a first blood and the screen cheat by Woong led to Frost totally being able to shut it down.

Even though they got fined it isn't enough IMO, either remake those games (even though Frost would likely win again) or reduce Frosts total winnings by %20.

Riot has dropped the ball recently and is kind of a joke right now, they need to make an example and show that cheating just doesn't fly.

And to think this mess could have been solved with one simple solution: arrange the seats so the players have their BACKS TO THE AUDIENCE MONITOR. They'd have to turn around in a pretty obvious way to look at it, or use a mirror which would be pretty blatant cheating.

If this were football, or any other actual sport, they'd be disqualified from winning anything. This is why Riot fucked it up so bad. The only real discourse that makes any sense to anyone with a sense of sportsmanship (read: most of the people watching and subsidizing the event), is to DQ all cheating players. But because Riot fucked up the venue so much, they'd have to basically DQ everyone. In the largest e-sports jackpot tournament ever.

GG Riot, Real Men of Genius.
