The reason this game is so poorly thought of is that the first couple of reviews for it were looking at it as a shooter. And they are correct, it's a crap shooter. Also, it's Obsidian, so it's a little buggy, but nothing game-breaking.

It is an excellent story/dialogue/choice driven RPG! Buy it, buy it now!

I'm going to support the "buy it now" crowd. I bought it back during the Summer Sale, it was more expensive than this, but I think it's a great game and worth the price. I think it's a shame that so many people focus on the bad things(I only encountered a few bugs, nothing major, really), when the game has so many wonderful ideas. The dialogue system as well as actual consequences for your actions were two of the major highlights for me.

I just completed another playthrough yesterday with different decisions, which was quite fun, even though I couldn't really bring myself to choose another weapon than the pistol again, since it's so damn OP, when you put a few skill points in it. I'll probably try on an easier difficulty(I've only tried hard so far) and go rampage with some of the bigger guns. Should be... interesting. Or rather, try a run with only gadgets or something like that. There are a few different ways to go through the game, despite what people say.

I would, but I don't think you can add only $2 to your Steam Wallet, and I only have $2 on this Visa Gift Card (I think, it won't let me check...).

EDIT: Holy crap it worked! Now this card is worthless. Kinda doubt the game will work on my computer, but it's just $2. Might work on the desktop...

Does Alpha Protocol have a "low quality" mode?
Yea its called Alpha Protocol.
lol jk

OT- tried it, didn't love it, didn't hate, so it's kinda just there you know

Well $2 (euros for me) ain't much, but I'm still unsure whether to buy it. Fuck, if it turns out to be bad I can always get my brother to punch me in the balls for free :p

Well I just bought it again, I don't mind paying $2...wait, $3? Hell I don't mind paying $3 for a no-cd patch from Steam.

Seriously. Just stop what you are doing, and go buy Alpha Protocol. It's a great game. Sure, it might be a little rough around the edges, but once you can get past that, you will be rewarded. It has a lush and incredibly dialogue system: each conversation is interesting, deep, and complex. If you want to see how conversations are done in games, then go play it. It's also one of the very few games that actually DELIVERS on the promise that "every action has a consequence," since the game will change radically depending on how you treat characters and behave in missions (it can tell if you are a stealthy or guns blazing person :O). Just remember that it's NOT a shooter with RPG elements, but an actual RPG. You do have to increase your skill in weapons if you want to use them. You can't just magically equip a pistol and headshot everyone.

I mean, what's the worst that can happen? You don't like it? It's only 2 dollars! What ELSE can you buy with 2 dollars!? Maybe a coke?
Already did, I have a mac so I won't be able to play it, but I bouth it as a matter of principal as I have waited for this moment for a while.

I'd quite rather spend $2 and get Breath of Death + Cthulhu Saves the World

Wasnt worth 2$ I mean really the game had so much hype and was SUCH a letdown. you were more or less punished if you didnt go the stealthy route and if you didn decide to go crazy with youg un you found the horrible truth that a blind man caoukld hit the target with ore precision than one of your guns. GOOD JOB SECRET AGENT

Glad I rented it rather than bought it

WHAT IS WITH PEOPLE SAYING IT'S NOT WORTH IT AT $2.

IT'S TWO BLOODY DOLLARS! There is no concievable situation you could be in where you are able to use the internet, and yet consider spending two dollars on a AAA title not worth your money
But you see, it's not a AAA title. If anything it was so bug ridden as to be called an AAAHHH title or maybe an AAARG title. But I digress, jokes aside I'll see if fan patches have helped to a noteworthy extent and only then consider picking it up. You wouldn't happen to know where to find fan patches would ya? Save me a search?

It's worth full price. Fantastic game. Flawed? Yes. But it shines in a couple of big areas: choice (both in how you play and the decisions you make) and consequence. The fighting is good, you just need to make sure you know what the hell you're doing. I saw someone trying to review the game once by showing a minute of footage of him trying to rapid fire with the pistol at medium range. If you're using the pistol, keep the crosshairs on the target for just a few seconds. Fire, and enjoy the satisfaction of a clean and quiet kill.

Most underrated game in years.
agreed, every time i see someone trashing on the gameplay ,it's because they are running in like a cod tard going "HERP DERP SHOOT AS MANY TIMES AS POSSIBLE WHILE RUNNING!" instead of trying to play it like an rpg -_-

and personally i found the boss battles awesome.

russian 80's fanatic? yes please.

they were at least semi creative in that aspect, since so many people are calling it a "deus ex rip off", even tho it plays 10x better and the characters/story are 10x better than the original DE
I don't think the characters are so deep. I don't want to oversell it there. There's really not a place for most of them to be deep, so they are instead more interesting "caricatures" (I guess that's the best word to use). Think of the ensemble in any spy or heist movie. You usually mostly have a bunch of quirky people. That's Stephen Heck, Albatross, and the rest.

But I agree on the Russian boss. Seriously, people. How can an 80's obsessed Russian who gains strength by snorting coke not sell you on the game.

Nope, sorry.

I personally never experienced bugs, at least not enough to give me the impression that it was a serious problem.

Perhaps Steam patched the game for me, or perhaps I just got lucky.

I suspect you were lucky, but that's never a bad thing. Just don't count on everyone being as fortunate.

DON'T DO IT!

Alpha Protocol = shittier Deus Ex Human Revolution.

I got it for my PS3 for $20, good game but the boss fights are just unfair.
This is for TWO dollars, if you have even the slightest interest in it you might as well get it, there is loads of other things that are much worse than alpha protocol which cost more than two friggin dollars! As you said, its a good game, and any game that costs only two dollars will have to be ninjabread level quality for you to not get it.

How about the fact that the fight is impossible if you are playing a stealthy character ? And that his knife stabs are impossible to avoid not matter how much Benny hill music you put in the background ?

Granted I was playing on hard, but it doesn't excuse a buggy boss fight where a young angsty russian in a purple leopard jacket is more bulletproof than a fucking veteran spy wearing an actual bulletproof jacket.

Though at 2$, I do think the game should be bought just to see how not to make a Deus Ex like game.

I already own the game for a console and it was probably one of the worst games I ever bought. So many bugs, so many glitches and so many annoying characters. Heck, Alpha Protocol is one of the reasons I don't play Obsidion games anymore.

So I caved in and bought it. I guess I'll see how buggy it is tonight then...
