Honestly I can't tell if its good or not due to the mixed reviews messing up my own opinions. Can you guys tell me what you think so I have something to sorta base off of.

Idea: Good
Weapon customization: Good
Dialogues: Very good
Bugs: Bad, very very very bad
Shooting system: Worse
Graphics: 2007

So, if you don't mind buggy/crappy gameplay and old graphics, it's a fun game to play. The dialogues are well done and the general idea behind the game is solid. Personally I can't make up my mind, but the bugs stop me from playing it very much, as I shut the game down when one happens to me (and it affects gameplay)

It sounds like Mass Effect minus the game stability and the good controls

Though I've not played the game, I'll say this sounds like a good summary.

It also sounds like they're charging about $30 too much for it. I might give it a spin if I see it in the bargain bin.

It's basically Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines for a new generation of gamers. Buggy, flawed, yet brilliant in its own ways and predestined to become a cult classic a few years down the line.

Hopefully Alpha Protocol wont follow Bloodlines example too closely though, seeing as Troika went down shortly after Bloodlines release. I'd hate to see Obsidian go, I like em. They're one of the only dev studio out there that seem to have a decent grasp of writing dialogue, something most other devs could learn from. Plus they're not afraid to take a few risks and try something new.

My suggestion? If you like games like Vampire: Bloodlines, Deus Ex, System Shock and the like you'll probably enjoy Alpha Protocol. But if you're not even sure what any of the games I mentioned above 'are', then you might want to either give it a pass or wait till it's on sale.

This. The hit box on the guns is so ridiculous that you can hardly hit anyone at range without sitting out in the open for a good 50 minutes. The enemy AI ranges from suicidal bumrush to turn and stare at wall retarded. I was having fun until I started getting into combat where the only logical gun to use is the shotgun simply because it will allow you to hit people. Wait what's that, THAT DOESN'T EVEN WORK!!!!!!!!!!!! I believe I can sum up my feelings on this game in one fell swoop. *frustrated grunt*

So far, this is more or less exactly how I'd describe it. I had an "interesting" bit in the tutorial where I was holding the Assault Rifle the wrong way round (I'd LOVE to know how they programmed that in), and a few weird kills where the guy started flopping around like an epileptic in a German nightclub, but other than that, it's been excellent so far.

Also, more than most games, until I got the controls down, I found the game punishingly hard. Now that I've got that down, though? Great game.

The game doesnt deserve the destructoid review. I'm all for differing opinions but the game is being panned for reviews when its really quite good. There are a few bugs, the character animations are horrible and the boss fights are stupid. Aside from that its a fun game to play and the choice system is quite good in the dialogue. It has two of the most memorable characters in any game ive played recently and the suprising thing is one of them can't even speak. Im talking of course about Steven Heck the crazy psychopath who is very funny at times and Sis the teenage body guard of the mysterious G22 leader. Sis is a mute and says nothing at all but so much is conveyed if you save her. Nothing needs to be said the looks suffice.

Mass Effect 1 was NOT a stable game - at least, not on PC - and a lot of the controls (driving sequences, anyone) were also pretty bad.

Alpha Protocol sounds like the kind of game I'd play just to experience the story. I always see these reviews and am afraid it will suck, but I think I'll give it a try anyway. Maybe see if I can get it on sale.

I agree with most of the review I should say. I don't think it deserves in anyway a 2/10. I think that's a load of bull. But I will say that many of the issues brought forth I agree with.

That's a pretty glowing review of it, putting it up there with the likes of Deus Ex and System Shock especially

It's not as good, but it is certainly in the same vein. People tend to forget that when Deus Ex was released it didn't actually get all that great reviews, it's mostly only in retrospect that people came to really adore it. Same with System Shock 1 and 2, neither of which ever sold particularly well. Both of which were also notoriously buggy on release and known for their, erm, 'mediocre' combat mechanics but redeemed by how good other elements of the game were.

Flawed games that incorporate rpg elements into combat where your choices can have an impact on how the game plays out, all focusing most heavily on story and characterization rather than basic gameplay. Yup, that's Alpha Protocol in a nutshell!

It's almost spot-on for Vampire: Bloodlines though, right down to the fact both games are the third game by their respective developers, both are receiving extremely varied reviews, both were released in a buggy state, both are criticized for their combat systems, both are focused around exploring a series of 'hubs', both have heavy emphasis on characterization as well as customization of your own character, choice is integral to both, both developers had a high pedigree, first truly unique project for both (Arcanum was basically Steampunk Fallout!), the similarities go on and on...

Exact same situation. It's been a very deja-vu!

wow, hadn't realized there were so many parallels. Quite interesting how that works out. I do remember both the System Shock games and Deus Ex getting very mediocre reviews, though my buddy turned me on to both series and i loved them (well, not Deus Ex 2 so much, but yea). Hmm, sounds like I'll have to pick it up at some point down the line (it's 6000 yen at Amazon right now, which is a little spendy for me atm, plus I'm still playing through Mass Effect 2 and Red Dead Redemption)

Sorry for posting in an 'old' thread,

but is anyone else completely turned off by the frakking timer in the dialogue moments?
I understand they wanted to make these moments feel intense, but a lot of times I seriously had to quit and re-load an old save (sometimes re-do a mission) because I accidentally selected an option I didn't want.

I counted two times in the game where the NPC was still talking for a brief moment after I selected how I wanted to react. Other times, they'll pose a question right before the timer is up. Simply aggravating.

(not an actual game quote) "So, anyway, I *was* purchasing weapons through Russia. Would you like me *User selects "yes" response* to kill all your friends and family now?"


As for my feelings of the game, having read no reviews; it wasn't as good as I expected, fighting normal enemies was a complete joke, later on the bosses became ridiculously overpowered (but doable... might have been my character's spec), and the choice system was fun to play around with. I'll probably re-play this game in a few months just to get a different ending.

Sounds more like Obsidian have made another KOTOR 2.

I don't know. I was happy to see the game finally released, since I really like Obsidian. Then the reviews came out and said the game sucks... But what the heck, if the game has some good diversity and great dialogue, I'm gonna give it a try.

Somehow, it reminds me of Deus Ex. Maybe the game will have it's share of followers. If there's gonna be a sequel, I hope they patch things up.

Fingers crossed that I'll like the game.

I went against the popular opinion and decided to buy this game. I actually enjoyed it. The coustomization is great, the story is compelling, and the interactivity is good. AI on the other hand is somewhere between a suicidial person in a gun store and a brain damaged quadruple amputee. Oh and the crosshairs are REDICULOUSLY huge.
