I took a sociology course (globalization) over the summer (as obtaining a BS in applied math requires me to take junior and senior level courses OUTSIDE OF FUCKIN' SCIENCE), where my professor tried to instill the following world view: The IMF (that's the International Monetary Fund), and the World Bank make every country in which they operate worse off, there is a drive to shut out the voices of the protesters opposed to a sort of corporate world government, and organic food is the way to go. It took me about 5 minutes to figure out that a) she was batshit fucking loco, and b) whether I cared or not, I wouldn't be able to make a difference.
So no, you're not a heartless douchebag, just a plain normal human. Whoever says they care is usually lying, unless they actually spend thousands of hours every year physically helping people.

Not because of empires taking over countries, draining the countries of there natural resources then leaving and creating a vacuum of power which has led to civil unrest creating a poor unstable economy that results in a poor education system unable to properly educate people on safe sex. My university is made me read this book about some guy who built schools in the middle east, and they are making me go to these lecture/seminar things about third world countries and children my age that live there and their hardships etc. I just got back from one, and i feel like i wasted an hour and a half of my life. I honestly don't care. I care about me and the people directly around me, not someone i have never met halfway around the world. So i ask you fellow escapists, am i a total heartless douche for not caring?

No, it has no positive effect on you. Without firsthand experience with these schools how can you hope to sympathize? People on the other side of the world are just that.

Monkeyman: Easy, while I disagree with that statement I can see where some actual arguments are and I might even say some parts are valid. I think you are getting a little too close to personal attacks.

OP: As long as you acknowledge that the problem is there and do not knowingly make the problems worse you are only an average moron (like me and many others ). You cross the line when you make it worse or don't stand up for big problems that you know should be stopped.

This, I dont put much stock in the "dont help anyone else until our own house is in order" argument.

Much of the third world is in such a shocking state because Western nations left them that way. Unpopular as it may be I think we owe many of them a duty of care. Much of South America is only now starting to climb out from under US supported dictators and the less said about colonism's impact upon Africa, the better.
