Am I dooming my future children?

Another thread has brought up the issue of parents giving their children easily taunt-able and generally goofy names. My question to you all is this: am I dooming my children to the same fate by giving them uncommon names (Daughter: Lyra; Son: Maes - - yes, my wife and I are super nerds)

Also; any of you giving/or gave your children unique names?

Still way too young and foolish to be a father. However, I don't want a John or Bill as my son. I want something unique, yes, but not easily tauntable. I don't see how Lyra will be ridiculed. Maes? I dunno, kids can be creative with their insulting...

I had a dream that I had just been presented my newborn child and named him Creator, and for some reason no one has been able to convince me that it's a bad idea for a name.

Even if I thought you were, I'd be the pot calling the kettle black. All of my children have names from fantasy novels. Only one of them is remotely normal, with another one probably passing for normal as an uncommon surname.

I'm a huge geek and I don't get the refrences. As for my children, I will be naming them Axle and Tracker.

Ok, fair enough, I guess they're not that weird...though our dog is named Tahiri and our cat is named River.

Probably not. Robin Williams named his daughter Zelda, so Maes isn't horrific by comparison.

I plan to name my son after Deathwing, so in class he can say, "My name is Neltharion and MY HATRED BURNS THROUGH THE CAVERNOUS DEEPS"

Not the worst names I have heard. The girl name is kinda neat, in fact. The boy name is kinda...weird though.

Lyra isn't that bad of a name. I actually went to school with a girl with the same name. So yeah, it's fine.

Maes though... while I can appreciate where it comes from, I think the kid will be made fun of for it quite a bit.

As for my kids... well I still need to get to the point where I want kids. Not to mention I'm horrible with thinking of names...

Those aren't that bad. I mean, if you look at the names in the thread that inspired this one (even the ones that aren't penis jokes waiting to happen), I think you'll feel a lot better about your choices.

I'm pretty sure it's from Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy, adapted into the feature picture The Golden Compass. I don't think it's particularly strange.

Maes will probably invite a fair amount of confusion over pronunciation, whereas Lyra is rather straightforward.

I doubt your daughter will get a lot of teasing because I think it is more acceptable for a girl to have an unusual name, there is limits to this, I am sure. My name was always mispronounced as a boys name and I never got teased about it. Although my mom would have been quite happy with everyone calling me Stevie, it never stuck.

If the boys name is mispronounced as being girlie you may have an issue with that. Especially at the beginning of every school year when the teachers inevitably get it wrong. No matter how simple you think it is, expect it to get screwed up, in front of everyone.

My daughter's middle name is Aeryn. As in Officer Aeryn Sun from Farscape. I have explained it to her and watched some episodes with her. At 6 she has no issues with it but who knows if that will change. I hope she is just as nerdy and maybe a little proud of it at some point. She loves dinosaurs and is seriously into gaming so I am thinking she may thank me for it at some point.

The way I see it, it doesn't matter if you named them after something nerdy like a video game character, as long as:

a) It's reasonable (so no 'Sephiroth' or 'Master Chiefs')
b) It can't easily be turned into a humiliating nickname (e.g. Lester the Molester)
c) It's a decent character. Name them after someone who's cool, or at least likeable.

Lyra is fine; Maes is a little strange, but not, I think, enough to warrant concern. A little strange is good.

However, if kids start calling each other names like these, it's better than alternatives.
I'd probably have odd names for my kids though, and until other kids get the references, your own are fairly okay.
If you wanted to be mean, make a common name spelled differently (ex Jeff = Geoff) so they're doomed to a life of mispronunciation.

Lyra? From the "His Dark Materials" trilogy, yes? I like the name. Wouldn't get bullied or anything.

Maes is a little odd, but again, I don't think it'd cause any problems. I know someone called Rex, which, of course is 'king' in Latin, and he doesn't get any stick for his name.

Edit: I want to call my son Spencer. I have the surname "Reid" and obviously Spencer Reid is the name of Matthew Gray Gubler's character on Criminal Minds. Spencer's not a particularly common name, so I guess it could be classed as unusual.

There's nothing wrong with an unusual name, as long as either:
A) you have an honest look at yourself and ensure that you aren't using your child's potential future embarrassment as a way to show the world how clever/worldly/nerdy you are.

and/or

B) you giver your child a conventional middle name so if one day they get sick of the odd first name you gave them they can choose to go by their middle name.

OH! Name your kid after an alien from there! Nothing bad will happen then!
This coming from a guy who thinks naming a son Aragorn would be awesome. Or one of the game of thrones characters.
However. you could try for a more normal referential name. Such as (for a game of thrones fan) Justin (probably a bad idea) or Stark.
